Buzzy. That perspective is tripping me out though, I don't think I totally like it. It doesn't really make that much sense to me.
Third(ish) dimensional is pretty weird, but I think it suits the cave theme ^.^

Well because it's the shadowing on the crystals that makes it seem like the lighting is always coming from the left. The grass and stuff points outward but the character stays facing up. It would make sense if you only saw the top of the character's head. Then it'd be like looking down a well. But if that was the case you'd see the plants from the top view, instead of rotated. It's like a mixture of a lot of different perspectives.

I mean, it looks interesting though.
The shadow effect comes with the shading I'm using, I'm actually not very good at it ;_;

The vanilla version is like this, there are no shadows ^.^

For the perspective side, you are totally right, it makes no sense when your character stays same. Oh god... I don't want to imagine if my character sprite also turn upside down when going down :~D

I would imagine he'd be something like this, in a bird's eye view.

Although as it is, I think you'd be best to just make those grass petals face the right way up. Keep the crystals facing outwards though. There's a difference in perspective between the floor and the walls. If you make the walls face outwards, but the floor just normal perspective, I think you can get away with it well ;)
Re-uploaded my image/map as your suggestion, it definitely worked better ^.^
