Back.

You know what's a game maker's worst enemy? A military deployment. Yeah. Back in the saddle though, and making that slow crawl to getting back to full speed. Expect shit to get rocked. Until thene, here's some thoughts to chew on. Nothing major, just want to get my feet wet.

Romancing SaGa is sort of the bee’s knees. Well, to be fair its a very flawed masterpiece. I posted about it before below so I won’t beat a dead horse. What I want to talk about is some of its ideas I’d like to adapt to my game making.

-Apothecaries. I liked the idea of being able to make your own potions and healing items and otherwise finding them was rare. Its too easy in RPGs to just buy the whole barn of 99 Potions and calling it a day. It makes healing cheap and routine. But making potions not only unbuyable, but you have to find them and make them yourself, will definitely make the player pay attention.

-Clout. Basically, this is a system of ‘the more you shop at a store, the more services you get’. Since my game has regular shops (stores that sell better gear the further you are) in addition to item crafting, I’d leave this feature to the crafting, so that the inventory evolves as you use it.

-Stats more integral to the battles. Stats are often underestimated and used to their barest extent in RPGs. In SaGa, stats determine everything from calculating effectiveness of certain skills to learn rates. I’d like to make stats more important as a whole.

More to come. Just wanted to break the ice.

IF YOU MAKE YOUR GAME WITH JUST A SIP OF INSPIRATION FROM ROMASAGA, I'M GOING TO LOVE YOUR GAME. AND MY LOVE RAISES WITH EVERY SIP YOU ADD TO THE CONCOCTION. 100% ROMASAGA, I'LL KILL YOU AND DRINK YOUR BLOOD BECAUSE OF RELIGIOUSNESS.

(Okay, not really obviously... Time for my medication! But I will love your game! :D).

Nice to see that you're back in action!
If you're glad, I'm elated. I'm happy to rap game design with you guys again.
Welcome back, man. Game design discussion could use a good boost around here.
I haven't played this game yet but I like the ideas put forward in this post. Generally, anything that can make a RPG look less like 50 different systems cobbled together at random is good in my book. The only thing I'm afraid with the apothecaries is that it might replace "buy 100 potions" by "grind for 100 hours to collect ingredients", which is not for the best.

ROMASAGA
Roma, Roma-ma, Romancing Saga?
Just do a little bit each time you can. You'd be surprised by how it all adds up. Write some scenes in a notebook if you can.
