A Game About Someone Who Plays Video Games

This is a review for version 1.1.2 EN.
My playtime: 04:01:57

Intro
Erayu is an adventure game about someone who is playing a video game. The story will shift between video game world and real world after certain points.

Graphics
To be honest, i'm really surprised with the graphics. I'm sure the dev puts a lot of effort in the graphics, seeing that all character sprites and portraits are changed based on what the character is doing - changing face expression, picking up items (including different items), changing clothes, and even singing (which is shown with the dialogue box). The animation when you open the in game video game is also amazing since it captures the shift between the real world and the virtual world perfectly.

Speaking of real and virtual world, you'll also notice that they are also presented differently; dialogue boxes, dialogue font, UI, and even save image are all different. Both lighting and special effects are also perfectly used in the map. The only thing that bothers me is that the lighting in the house in the real world right after you finish the swamp map is very dark; i had trouble in locating the area even after turning all the lamps on.

Story
The story is about Josh who finds a game that no one knows before and ends up playing it. Later on, he notices that there is something strange happening within the game as he plays it. The story will also tell about the real world and the difficulties he has to go through because of his obsession with playing games and the bad grade he has, making him to constantly fight with his father. Although i don't really understand about the difficult thing that the story tells later in the game (about the Erayu world being forgotten and you need to tell stories to prevent it to disappear), the ending is fantastic. There are 2 endings in the game and while i like the second one very much (where you stay in the real world), the first one is also made beautifully. Actually, i was hoping that it'll show how the father is doing, but i figured that the father might fall into depression and end up with suicide because of what he has to go through so i kinda understand why it's not being shown. I also like how the credits have different scenes depending on what ending you choose.

The game
First of all, you can only play the game with mouse. Sure, you can access some feature with your keyboard, but you can't do the most important thing - moving and interacting with objects - with it. Honestly, i don't know why it's designed like this especially since i'm having problems with mouse when i played the game. Sometimes the game won't let me interact with objects even though i'm already in front of it. I ended up having to interact with other objects before interacting with that object again to fix it. There's also a problem where i'm having trouble to find the interactable objects in the real world since sometimes the mouse won't show whether something is interactable or not (especially near the end of the game).

As for the game itself, you'll mostly picking up items and interacting with objects. You can use some items in your bag and combine them whenever you're in the virtual world. However, i tend to get stuck in the game and had to consult the walkthrough several times to proceed. I find some choice to be weird though (like when you have to use flute on the tree behind you).

The game has some puzzles in it. While some of them are easy enough to understand, there are some puzzles that i won't understand unless i read the walkthrough (the small stones and snowman puzzle). I even had some trouble with the controls; i kept on pressing right click on the first puzzle, thinking that i would rotate the piece and i ended up exiting the puzzle instead. I also thought that you have to input the whole info to the statue in the snowman puzzle, only to find out that there are only 2 fields in the statue. The fields are also not noticeable since i was having trouble to locate the second field.

Lastly, the game runs very slowly whenever you're in the virtual world. This also affects the cutscene since i think that the custcene for wait and pause requires you to wait for a long time before the next event to kick in. In addition, the long walks near the end of the game feels like forever for me.

Pros:
- 2 endings
- Puzzles
- Amazing graphics

Cons:
- Game runs very slow in the virtual world
- Difficult control

Conclusion
This is an amazing adventure game. Sometimes, the game will run slowly and the mouse might give you trouble, but you'll enjoy the game a lot if you have no problem with it.

Typo:
- When talking about the city to Gharon: "Come one, stop whining." should be "Come on, stop whining."
- When talking to Grao after you sleep: "I am empty, I am a noone and everything disappeared" should be "I am empty, I am a no one and everything disappeared" (nobody would be a better option though)
- After the dialogue above: "Then we should fill this emptyness" should be "Then we should fill this emptiness"
- When talking to Grao after you are back from Naru's house: "There is noone who ventured deep into it and returned alive." should be "There is no one who ventured deep into it and returned alive."
- When you meet the blue haired man in the swamp: "Between existance and nothing." should be "Between existence and nothing."
- When talking to Alex in the kitchen after you go to the swamp: "If there is noone left who can recall" should be "If there is no one left who can recall"
- When talking to dad on breakfast after you go to the swamp: "Uncle needs the money to be payed out" should be "Uncle needs the money to be paid out"
- Several dialogues after the dialogue above: "I'd rather stay.\ here" should be "I'd rather stay here"
- When talking to Gharon on déjà-vu: "But noone's listen to me" should be "But no one listens to me"
- When talking to princess: "That's why noone knew the game." should be "That's why no one knows the game."
