Progress Report

Slowly Getting There...

Alright, so I've officially revamped the nice little intro area, otherwise known as the "Bandit Town" or "Bandit Hideout." Screenies of the new areas'll be up in the images. I've made the whole scenario of Akai's little Mutiny and Kenshi getting let out a bit more believable and less WTF.

In addition to revamping the intro area, I've nearly finished the events immediately following what happens after you enter Nairikuno. I've just got to figure out the creatures that'll hinder you, as well as how to do the boss. Soon as I'm done with that, I'll finish up the interiors for Nairikuno, start working on the dungeon beneath the town, and start brainstorming how to map out The Dynastic Roads.

I still haven't finished the gear lists, nor have I implemented the weapon and armor reforms. >.<

Well, wish me luck!

Progress Report

Finally on Track.

Well, I've officially restarted development, and I've got a neat little tidbit to share. You see, I'm a big fan of Final Fantasy, and this game is supposed to be a labor of love designed to be similar, but not, a Final Fantasy game. The combat was absolutely stunted, that is a straight up turn based RPG is more suited to being made in Flash. Thanks to Yanfly's Classical ATB script, I put in place the ATB system we all,(I hope), know and love. I'm laying off of advancing the Nairikuno Manor and Temple scenarios, and focusing first on revamping the initial "Bandit Hideout" location. This, in turn, will allow me to create a more robust and perhaps believable scenario where Kenshi and Co. escape a crumbling building where the splintered factions of the Dust Bandits are warring. From there, I just have to do Pacquiao's house, and I think I should be done with visual and storytelling improvements for the time being. With that done, I'll be able to move on to finishing the Item lists as well as restructuring their values for balancing purposes. After ALL THAT is done, I'll continue the Nairikuno scenario and everything after.

I've got a bad feeling that this isn't going to be done by August.

Things are Gonna be BACK ON TRACK!

WOOOOOOO!
Got a new computer, so everything will start running about clockwork. Even got myself a job on the weekends, neat eh?

Anyhow, I'll be starting work back up on the game by the end of May. I'll have enough free time by then to keep working.

During the Hiatus though, I've kept myself busy and ended up learning a wee bit of flash. Hopefully, that'll mean I can understand Ruby a bit more and end up improving the quality of the game. I also happened to dig through my storage and found a neat little cache of books. With my somewhat superhuman reading speed, I cleared the cache and realized: My story's got some random plot holes, and some parts that are just DYING to be refurbished.

Wish me luck; Kenshi's Story depends on it!

Progress Report

MASSIVE Delays

Bad, BAD things have happened. My computer finally gave out, and the entire motherboard quite literally melted, sticking to my hard drive. Stupid 6 year old cooling fans finally gave out.

I NEARLY lost all of my work for Chastitas, as well as my then only means of updating this page and working on the game. However, through a little perserverance, some serious luck, and several ziplocs of ice and a large fan, I managed to run my junkyard PC long enough to transfer all of my files over to friend's computer. I had to jury rig some wires connecting a cheap motherboard over to my hard drive.

Put simply; I'm going to have to completely scrap just about every deadline I've got.

I WILL continue to work on the game, but I won't be able to do very much until my new computer comes in in the next month, month and a half. So, wish me luck.

I have to offer my sincerest apologies to everyone following this, as well as to myself. In any case, wish me luck, I'm going to need it.

Request

A Battleback and Voice Acting

Alright, I'm in need of one thing, and requesting another.

I'm in desperate need of a battleback in the style of RTP; more importantly, one that is sort of like a palm forest. Really bad description, I know, but think of something along the lines of fitting the Palm Tree tile in RTP. I searched for a good hour without results.

As for the other thing: I'm teetering on the edge of whether or not to have voice acting in my game. What's holding me back, I suppose, is the fact that I don't really have anyone reliable to hope to voice sections of it. So, hidden away in the spoilers are four samples. Around 6 lines each, one for Kenshi, Muzai, Yohei, and Shinoken.

Kenshi
Young Male. Sarcastic and Spirited.Slight Arabian accent.
(Accusatory Tone)"Trying to celebrate my late sister's birthday; share some of my precious rice to honor her name, and end up getting kidnapped as a result."
"She would've turned 13 just yesterday, when your father's group kidnapped me..."
(Wistfully happy, with a grave tone.)"Yohei was right. You really could feel that smile in death. Guess I already fulfilled that wish old man."
(Spirited, angry. Stalwart in his conviction.)"I promised myself that I wouldn't let a smile that made the sun seem as if it barely shined at all fade away!"
(Same as above. Empahsis on will and never.)"I will ensure that Shometsu never comes to Fruition!"
(Just used all of his energy in yelling.Resigned but angry.)"Tch. I'm going to the manor, Muzai. I'll meet you outside."

Muzai
Young Female. Blunt, Spirited. Think any anime heroine that has no tits; with a slightly deeper voice, (Come on, women do not sound 10 years old.)
(Blunt, apathetic.)"We're probably going to have to deal with each other for a while, so it makes sense."
(Apathetic, but slightly mocking at "Rice Guardian")"I'm assuming your apparent obsession with rice explains your nickname, Rice Guardian?"
(Blunt. Wistful when at family part. Very slow, methodical and shady at "Only Child.")"The name's Muzai. Muzai Utsukushisa. 19. Single. My last family member just died in there. Only...Child..."
(Lovey-Dovey Question!)"Hey, promise me something, would you?"
(Serious. Blunt.)"Promise me you'll never leave me."
(Childishly, like a child thinking out loud that he hopes he won't get caught.)"I hope he didn't see me sleeping in his bed though..."

Yohei
This is just one long piece of text with a voiceover.
Older Male. Confident, Regal. Think Older Japanese Samurai with a remarkable sense of honor. No japanese accent though.
"To Muzai and Kenshi,

I had a dream last night. I dreamt of
Chastitas. I dreamt that this land, ravaged by
war, disease, and famine, was free. I saw a
young girl named Ureshii; She told me
about you Kenshi. About everything. She told
me that you would be able to change the fate
of this world. I would wish never to see the
images she showed me that night again.
I don't want to see this world in chaos. I don't
want to see it destroyed. Muzai doesn't deserve
to see this world in such a state.
Ureshii showed me something
though. Something that could melt even the iciest
of hearts. She showed me Muzai smiling. I
haven't seen her smile since her mother died,
and I might never see it again. Kenshi, take
care of Muzai for me. I'll be able to feel
her smile on the other side. Ureshii told me
that everything was going to be okay.

Go on you two. Kenshi, Muzai, take
on this big, bad world. Do me a favor, and save it.

I know I've done bad things in the
past. What can I say? I'm the leader of a
bandit clan. The gods weigh heavily on my
fate strings. I trust that you can clear the
strings of those unable to.

Good Luck, and Fight On,
Yohei, The Black Dragon"

Shinoken
Old Fellow. Not a particularly deep voice, think the Japanese actor for Abel Nightroad in Trinity Blood. Real lofty and carefree, with the ability to turn serious on a dime.
(Think your average stoner.)"I'll give ya some of the fish man! It's a really rare fish that sells well. Plus, I heard you can smoke the scales and they give this super-high!"
(Blunt Rage. Emphasis pauses at periods.)"The Gleam Eyes is ruthless and emotionless. He. Will. Kill. You. Both of you."
(Blunt and serious.)"I am not assisting you in a suicide mission. That is final."
(Spirited, almost like a rousing speech to troops.)"No matter what you witness...No matter the decisions you make and no matter their consequences...No matter what happens! No matter the outcome! No matter the conflict!Gods Damn it all, you promise me that what is done by you to prevent Shometsu is only done for the sake of the people you care about!"

Progress Report

Current Order of Things

Well, thanks to the diligence of our fine Tester, I've managed to get most bugs ironed out. Phew. My confidence just rose a thousand times! I'm expecting more, and I know the current version posted is littered with them. Don't worry, those'll all be solved in time.

Here's what I'm currently working on:
-Nairikuno; This guy is only around a a quarter of the way done, the initial ordeal is almost done, now I just need to get working on the backstabbing noble, the interiors, and the underground Aquifer Tunnels.
-Interactivity; I LOVE having a protagonist interact with the world around him. From casual remarks to accidentally breaking a pot and getting scolded by some old nun. I'm working to introduce this into new areasm E.G. Telbooze Manor

Stuff that's Will get worked on:
-Dynastic Roads; This is essentially gonna be a massive, open Dungeon, replete with two cave systems and a couple of nice long mountainous trails. I think I'm gonna be taking a bit of inspiration from FFIV, FFVI, and maybe even Hero's Realm for this part. I only hope I won't have to push back the deadline, as this is going to be my biggest mapping challenge yet.
-More Aesthetics Fixes; I hate myself for leaving Pacquiao's house alone. I hate myself even more for that disgrace of an initial area I made called "Bandit Town"
that's all going to get a revamp by the time I release the last "Small Update" demo.

Wish me luck!

Game Design

Ending the First Saga...And the Next Three

Agarest Generations. I took a lot of inspiration from that game, particularly the fact that our protagonist will fall in love with one,(or both!), of the female protagonists in the progress of the story, shaping how the next saga will follow.

I took a look at my overall storyboard, and thought- Why so Linear? If you take a look at just about any anime, that Harem ending is supposed to be the best case scenario. I think I made it too easy to get to.

So, without revealing too much, you can get one of the "Bad" endings not only by taking a blunt strategic choice, but also just by being an absolute douche to one of the chicks. Of course, if you're a douche to BOTH of the chicks, you won't exactly get a forever alone ending, as that would destroy the whole flow. You gotta have kids for the next three sagas to happen! What I think will happen is one of those endings where it's essentially the Harem ending, but being the douche means you don't get to see your kids grow up, or hell, even be born. I gotta support the guys who are bad with women XD

I'm pretty sure I can pull this off by giving the player a set of 3 dialogue choices. One choice is pro -that girl, another pro -this girl. The other sets you up to be a douche, and from there you get another 3 choices. Be a douche to one, the other, or both. From there, the douche choices subtract 1 from the variable that is their "affection" and the nice choices add 1. This is a double edged sword though, as sometimes being a douche can get you some points. I.E. Not Taking a Side or something will initially net you some bad luck, but will end up getting a +2, and vice versa with nice choices.

In any case, being overtly friendly with one girl, even if you don't make the blunt strategic choice later on will net you one of the "Not So Bad" endings. Being Douchey means your ass doesn't get to see yo' kids. Staying pretty Neutral gets you the Harem ending, and making blunt decisions nets you "Bad" endings.

Tell me what you all think.

Hotfix #3 and Roadmap

Alright, this is the last hotfix I'm going to put out, for sanity's sake. Most if not all major bugs *SHOULD* be squashed by now, but I'm sure minor bugs, text clipping, and typos are still around. I haven't really done too much to fix those. Besides, quirkiness adds to a game, right?

(That hotfix is actually compressing as I write this...)

Note to Self: Thoroughly playtest the game BEFORE releasing a major update.

Anyways, Roadmap time. I realize I've been a little washy here and there when it comes to content and dates. It's sort of a learning process. I don't like deadlines, but if I don't set one, nothing gets done.

Deadline for "Small Update" Demo #3 is March 31st 1:59 AM EST.
It *WILL* Contain:
-Nairikuno in all it's Glory.
-The Aquifer Tunnel and Aquifer Temple
-Tensai and Kukyona
-The Dynastic Roads
-A Revamped "Bandit Town"
--------------------Deadline Changes-----------------------------------------------
-Deadline for the FIRST SAGA has been pushed back to August 1st 1:59 AM EST
-Deadline for the FIRST CONTINENT, Torionogare, has been pushed back to the current deadline of July 1st 1:59 AM, otherwise known as May 31st my time.
--------------------Feature Changes------------------------------------------------
-Voice Work is still something on the fence. I wouldn't mind having fully voiced dialogue, but then I'd have to find a way to turn it off if you skipped the dialogue. Having short little phrases here and there to accompany speech balloons and major scenes, as well as combat would probably be healthier for my sanity.
-The Combat Renovation will be pushed back to AFTER "Small Update 3"
-My lazy ass needs to finish doing the Item Lists. There's no need to have it finished for the "Small Updates", but I'll need to get my rear in gear to finish those by the end of the first continent.

In addition to all of this, I'm in need of testers, my new Lead Tester has been hard at work identifying the bugs in the Aesthetics Update, but as the game gets larger, I'll need people who can identify little bugs that we otherwise miss.

There's Much to be done, so wish me luck!

Hotfix #2 and Contemplation

Good News?
Hotfix #2 for the Aesthetic Update and Cursed Passages is out. I still dunno if old saves will work, but in any case, I took out the major bugs after spending about 4 hours on a playthroughs to identify bugs and from Roy's assistance in bug spotting. Thanks Roy!

Taking a look at my progress so far, I've taken another look at my very first map; The Bandit Town. I'm going to revamp it, as it's uglier than a Butt Ugly Martian at the moment. Hopefully, that doesn't mean a slough of new bugs.

I also plan to EVENTUALLY get some legit sprites in the style of Final Fantasy, as the current pictures don't cut it :D

Bad News?
I'm seriously contemplating pushing back the release date for the end of the First Saga, as well as my internal date for the end of Chastitas: The Broken Land as a whole. Inspiration is coming to me in leaps and bounds, but a lone amateur using resources from the internet only does so much, so fast when accompanied by IRL Responsibilities and Desires. Don't take that as "I'm Giving Up." I most certainly am not. I'm getting more and more motivated for this project as I go.

More Good News?
I'll release the final "small update" demonstration to give all of you guys that final taste by the end of March, if not before then. After the last "small update" demo, I'm going only start putting them out for you guys to play with after I finish each major landmass and storyline portion. However, if you'd like to play it, just PM with a request to be a tester. All I need to do now is figure out how to let people be testers....

Wish me luck!

Bug Fixes!

Hey all, please refrain from clicking that download button at this time, there's a LOT of bugs/issues that I missed in this demo.

Of course, if you're willing to play test everything you can, go ahead and PM me as clear, professional, and as detailed a bug/issue report as you can.

Here's a list of what I already know about courtesy of Roy and my own short playthrough, (before I had to go to work.):
- Oasis Merchant doesn't give direction
- Rock on Weapon Shop Freezes Game
- Fire sound at start doesn't go away after second cutscene
- Kenshi and Muzai start at Level 8
- Shinoken pops up without being in the party on old saves
- Balancing Issues regarding Mini-Boss on Cursed Passages
- Painful Puzzles
- Lack of Loot Randomness
- Stuck in Weapon Shop's wall after coming off the roof

Bugs/Issues I know of, but can't fix unless I get a detailed report or have done a playthrough on my own:
- Sudden Nairikuno teleport after exiting a location
- Entering and or Exiting a house gets you stuck somewhere
- Balancing Issues (I'll need a full report on your characters' levels and equipment, along with the enemies and/or location.)
