Essentially, Father is a game that came to be after playing Wither. I was really fascinated with the simplicity of the game and the departure from the use of RPG Maker's engine. From there I tried implementing a menu system in Dragon Quest + and it didn't go to well. But I still wanted to do something with what I had done with the menu.

So I started putting together a game that would use a customized menu system and the game just took off. After deciding that only being inspired by Mother could destroy the feeling of the game, I dug deeper to find what it was I was really trying to portray. So in short, this is not to be thought of as a fan game as there aren't any true moments of fandom in the game. I guess you could call it a knockoff of all sorts of games. And I'm fine with that. Call it what you want but the story will be completely mine even if most of the graphics aren't. And it's not like I'm not crediting the original spriters as they've asked. Sorry, that's a rant that I put in because some people can't accept the fact that I'm only doing this for FUN.

Father is a result of Wither and Gameboy/Gameboy Advance games. I have fond memories of the Gameboy/GBA era and that, ultimately, is what's driving the development of the game. Pokemon, Zelda, Dragon Ball Z: Buu's fury, these are some of the games that are inspiring Father's development.

Story

Work In Progress

Concept

Here are the basic concepts of the game:

Main Menu
This menu was made in response to the horrible RPG Maker 2003 default menu. I've crafted the entire menu from scratch and all of the needed information is on one screen. It's laid out to the best of my ability.

Belly Points

BP or Belly Points stand as your HP during this game. At the start of the game you will have 100 maximum BP however, you can gain 100 more each time you find a BP disc. These are found throughout the game and allow you to get past harder enemies.

Power Ups & Stats

The game has 3 other stats besides BP. In addition to BP are:

ATK: Your Attack Power, DEF: Your Defense, SPD: Your Speed. Now, Speed is important because it will decide who goes first in a battle and who goes first for the entirety of the battle. Always try your best to be speedy. In order to upgrade your stats you need to find the corresponding disc which will always up your stat by 1 point. So, in all there are 32 total discs to be found in the game. You will need all 32 to fight the final boss.

Special Items

There are 3 special items that have replaced Repels:

Mattocks break rocks, Cut-Blades cut down shrubs, and power rings allow you to move rocks.

Money & Storage

You will be able to carry up to $9,999 in your pocket during the game. However, if you decide to set up a bank account, you can store up to $99,999. It is crucial to set up a bank account in this game so keep this in mind. You must set up a 4 digit pin number in order to access your account but if you do forget you have to pay a fee to remind you of your pin. ATMs will be placed accordingly throughout the game.

You will also be able to store up to 9 of each consumable item. However, if your accounts, Bank and Storage, are not linked you will be charged a fee for any withdrawal of items or if you want to send a food/drink item to your storage via Lucky's superstore. Lucky's superstore is the shop in this game and if you are a "valued customer" you won't have to pay the extra $2.00 to send an item to your storage area. Storage bins will be placed a bit sparse in this game.

Battles

This game was intended to not have any battles but I have decided against that. Now, there's a completely evented battle system that I've devised that is very simple to use. Your options are simply: Attack, Defend, Item, and Run. Simple enough. If you are to die during battle you will be taken to the nearest hospital and charged a flat rate to revive you. Or if you have a "Remedy" you will automatically be revived.

Notes

-During the game, you will walk at a pace similar to the Pokemon games on gameboy. There are no Running shoes, but there is a Bike. You should make sure to get this bike early on if you don't want to walk for a while.

-Area Notification Toggle Icon (You'll always know where you're at)

-Fully evented/pictured Playtime Counter

-Good Deeds System

-Trade items, similar to Zelda: Link's Awakening, will make an appearance in this game. I was always fascinated by who would trade what with me in Link's Awakening and that has stuck with me ever since.

Around 4-8 hours of gameplay planned. I don't want this to be a 40+ hour game that you'll probably not finish.

The game flavors include, RPG, Old School and Comedy. There will only be hints of comedy in the game, however.

I hope you're looking forward to the game's release and I'm really excited to be working on something that is (asides from most graphics and sound), something that is truly my idea. Dragon Quest + development, even though it has a larger base, has taken a back seat to Father because there are Andriod/iOS versions of the game out and I felt that the game had little to offer in terms of anything new or refreshing.

My Father is Alive!

Hey everybody! It's been quite some time since the last Father update...5 months exactly but who's counting right?

Well, let's get right into it then. Here is how the game stands:

Story: 20%

Maps: 5%

Battle Eventing: 30%

Item Finalization: 55%- Yes, the menu runs super smooth now.

Music: 0%

They look pretty bleak, no? Well, it's actually not that bad. I am continuously fleshing out the story into something that people will genuinely enjoy. What you played in the demo is complete garbage compared to what I'm working on now.

As for Maps, I will be focusing on territorial themes much like the pokemon games. Don't worry about maps, I'm good with those. Once the battle eventing is done, I can just plug n' chug.

Battles: As you know, Father will use an evented battle system. Some people obviously said that it was boring and that was okay as it was based off of a 1990's obscure gameboy game. As you can see from the updates, Father's battle system will be getting some adjustments.

-The entire screen will be filled with appropriately placed info. The boxes will be cycled by pressing left or right. The beta screen still is missing the ever present item menu and the attack buttons. This will all make sense soon.

-SP is making an appearance. SP or SPECIAL POINTS will be your "MP" in this game. Speed will be replaced with this stat. Unlike MP, SP determines what kind of attacks you can do. Each character has a different attack menu with different types of attacks. For example, the new character, Seiji, will attack with at BB gun so your attack will be button based. SP can be leveled up and with each level up you gain 10 SP. Note that all the characters share SP so you will have to balance out your attacks.

-Attacks: You will have 3 attacks to choose from for each character, excluding your cat:( You will have a Weak Attack (DOWN ARROW =0SP), Medium Attack (LEFT OR RIGHT ARROW=5SP), STRONG Attack (UP=10SP). Starting the game, you will mostly use a weak attack until you level up your SP. Again, each character will have different ways to attack.

-You may have noticed the "Time Bar" at the bottom right. For some attacks, they are timed so you can try to get optimal damage out of your SP use. Seiji will use this for his BB shots. You will Have 5 seconds to attack. And again, this is experimental and is subject to change.

-All items will be displayed in smaller fashion in a submenu to the right. You will be able to choose which items you'd like to use from there and the battle will resume after that. Keep in mind that only one character can attack per round.

-Music: I haven't gotten around to making all the concept documents for the composer to see what types of tunes would fit the game but I'm working on that. The game's sound will be based off the Pokemon DS instruments and boy do they sound good.

Overall, the game is progressing nicely. The battle menu still has tons of work to be done but it isn't anything hard. We're looking at Late 2016 mid 2017 release. I will however, be putting this game on the side for the remainder of the year to finish and release Dragon Quest + by December.

I thank everyone who is interested in this game and it'll only get better from here.

Subscribed, looking forward to playing it (if it's ever released). :)
Thanks so much. I also have folks over at starmen.net helping out too. Believe me, It'll be done by this year.

You don't have to worry about finishing it this year. Rushing a project won't do anything but put more stress on you and leave holes in the game. Just ignore those that are whining at you ''Oh it should be done NOOW!'', they obviously don't know how game creation works. If something comes up in your personal life that puts the game to a halt, well it happens. Great games take a while to make yo. Good luck and I've been subbed to this for a while.

FINALLY! Someone else who has the vision of using Pokemon R/S/E graphics in a game aside from a Pokemon game! You're my hero! (Ruby is my favorite game of all time, and now I'm looking forward to maybe playing ORAS).

Hey, if you need more resources.. check out my recently released Pokemon: Resource Kit. It even has maps of Littleroot Town, routes, and tons of extra stuff you might be able to use. Including NPCs. :) It's free for the community.

Great work. Subscribed!
My friend, this is exactly what I'm doing. Pokemon Graphics from RSE are awesome and I actually consider them my favorite games in the series. Omega Ruby will be mine in november though. Still, it can't beat the original classics.

Actually, I just downloaded the resource kit a while ago, thanks:D I'll be using a mixture of Pokemon and Earthbound/Mother sprites. Thanks for the sub.

I'm so glad that the new trailer released today shows how the game has kept some of the aspects of the original. I love the old graphics, but the new 3D style will be amazing as well. I remember trying Diamond/Pearl when they first came out, but the "magic" was gone.. couldn't really get into it. The advanced generation was the best!

I might have to go back to Nintendo, and buy a 2DS or a 3DS.. I would LOVE to play Omega Ruby. Just seeing the same old route remade leading to Rustboro City in the new trailer.. wow. :D

Hope you enjoy the resource kit! :) You might find some useful stuff in there.

Ya know, I've done just this. I'm delaying the initial date just because of this. I plan on releasing next year. Although the game will be about 4-5 hours long now it takes much time to even get that done. So yeah, I was gonna push back eventually because I started making the game something that it wasn't supposed to be.(Better)Thanks for subs and support.
