Essentially, Father is a game that came to be after playing Wither. I was really fascinated with the simplicity of the game and the departure from the use of RPG Maker's engine. From there I tried implementing a menu system in Dragon Quest + and it didn't go to well. But I still wanted to do something with what I had done with the menu.
So I started putting together a game that would use a customized menu system and the game just took off. After deciding that only being inspired by Mother could destroy the feeling of the game, I dug deeper to find what it was I was really trying to portray. So in short, this is not to be thought of as a fan game as there aren't any true moments of fandom in the game. I guess you could call it a knockoff of all sorts of games. And I'm fine with that. Call it what you want but the story will be completely mine even if most of the graphics aren't. And it's not like I'm not crediting the original spriters as they've asked. Sorry, that's a rant that I put in because some people can't accept the fact that I'm only doing this for FUN.
Father is a result of Wither and Gameboy/Gameboy Advance games. I have fond memories of the Gameboy/GBA era and that, ultimately, is what's driving the development of the game. Pokemon, Zelda, Dragon Ball Z: Buu's fury, these are some of the games that are inspiring Father's development.
Story
Work In Progress
Concept
Here are the basic concepts of the game:
Main Menu
This menu was made in response to the horrible RPG Maker 2003 default menu. I've crafted the entire menu from scratch and all of the needed information is on one screen. It's laid out to the best of my ability.
Belly Points
BP or Belly Points stand as your HP during this game. At the start of the game you will have 100 maximum BP however, you can gain 100 more each time you find a BP disc. These are found throughout the game and allow you to get past harder enemies.
Power Ups & Stats
The game has 3 other stats besides BP. In addition to BP are:
ATK: Your Attack Power, DEF: Your Defense, SPD: Your Speed. Now, Speed is important because it will decide who goes first in a battle and who goes first for the entirety of the battle. Always try your best to be speedy. In order to upgrade your stats you need to find the corresponding disc which will always up your stat by 1 point. So, in all there are 32 total discs to be found in the game. You will need all 32 to fight the final boss.
Special Items
There are 3 special items that have replaced Repels:
Mattocks break rocks, Cut-Blades cut down shrubs, and power rings allow you to move rocks.
Money & Storage
You will be able to carry up to $9,999 in your pocket during the game. However, if you decide to set up a bank account, you can store up to $99,999. It is crucial to set up a bank account in this game so keep this in mind. You must set up a 4 digit pin number in order to access your account but if you do forget you have to pay a fee to remind you of your pin. ATMs will be placed accordingly throughout the game.
You will also be able to store up to 9 of each consumable item. However, if your accounts, Bank and Storage, are not linked you will be charged a fee for any withdrawal of items or if you want to send a food/drink item to your storage via Lucky's superstore. Lucky's superstore is the shop in this game and if you are a "valued customer" you won't have to pay the extra $2.00 to send an item to your storage area. Storage bins will be placed a bit sparse in this game.
Battles
This game was intended to not have any battles but I have decided against that. Now, there's a completely evented battle system that I've devised that is very simple to use. Your options are simply: Attack, Defend, Item, and Run. Simple enough. If you are to die during battle you will be taken to the nearest hospital and charged a flat rate to revive you. Or if you have a "Remedy" you will automatically be revived.
Notes
-During the game, you will walk at a pace similar to the Pokemon games on gameboy. There are no Running shoes, but there is a Bike. You should make sure to get this bike early on if you don't want to walk for a while.
-Area Notification Toggle Icon (You'll always know where you're at)
-Fully evented/pictured Playtime Counter
-Good Deeds System
-Trade items, similar to Zelda: Link's Awakening, will make an appearance in this game. I was always fascinated by who would trade what with me in Link's Awakening and that has stuck with me ever since.
Around 4-8 hours of gameplay planned. I don't want this to be a 40+ hour game that you'll probably not finish.
The game flavors include, RPG, Old School and Comedy. There will only be hints of comedy in the game, however.
I hope you're looking forward to the game's release and I'm really excited to be working on something that is (asides from most graphics and sound), something that is truly my idea. Dragon Quest + development, even though it has a larger base, has taken a back seat to Father because there are Andriod/iOS versions of the game out and I felt that the game had little to offer in terms of anything new or refreshing.
