Dreaming Mary is an original adventure game in a sidescrolling format, made using the free RPG Maker VX Ace Lite. It is inspired by the Japanese horror game Ib and the abstract game Yume Nikki, and is influenced by the indie platformer Eversion as well as the TV show Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica. Despite these influences, Dreaming Mary is not exactly a horror game. It does contain horror elements, though they might never be encountered by a player who chooses to indulge in the dreams instead of investigating.

The game's average playtime ranges from fifteen to twenty-five minutes to reach one ending, and there are four endings. In the game you are able to interact with items and NPCs. It is important to pay attention to dialogue and to your surroundings in order to proceed. Sound is vital in this game and can help the player move forward as well as provide hints to the situation Mary has found herself in.

This game is not intended for children or those of a nervous disposition and may contain triggering content. Please play with headphones or high audio in a quiet room. There are four endings and bonus content is available after all four have been achieved in one game file. For hints and information, please see the game's homepage at the bottom of the description.

STORY

Mary is a girl who loves to dream. In fact, she loves to dream so much she can spend an entire day dreaming. One day, when she falls asleep, she finds herself in a nostalgic place very different from her other dreams. Everyone there knows her and treats her like an old friend, and they invite her to play with them or help them. When she finishes all of their tasks, she is invited deeper into the dream.

Will you lead her to fall into her dreams? Or will you bring her back to the waking world?

As the player, you have the choice in the final decision of Mary's final dream.

FEATURES
*Custom graphics
*Custom music
*Vocal songs
*Voices
*Movie
*Bonus content (available after achieving all 4 endings in 1 game file)

ACE LITE CHALLENGE
Dreaming Mary was originally created and completed in RMVX Ace Lite. It was ported to the full version of Ace afterwards, but still conforms to many of the original restrictions of the Lite software, such as:
*No more than 20 maps
*Only 10 events per map
*No more than 10 common events
*Limit of 100 switches and variables
*No call common event option

The full Ace software was needed for file encryption and font change. Mithran's Text Cache script is used as well as a single line of call script in the game's eventing.

4/19: Updated download link added!
Fixed bugs:
-Premature notification of the 4 endings
-Removal of script which caused ‘sound file not found’

Still active bug(s):
-Bonus mode freeze from painting (please only activate bonus mode before the 'turning point' of the game)

Produced by Accha (story, art, programming, voice)
With support from Trass (music, advice on how to use RMVX)

Wonderfully created game. Beautiful art and characters, very realistic handling of the subject matter, very disturbing. Thumbs up.

Never thought I'd see the day, but somebody has essentially made a bootleg version of Dreaming Mary.

Grab your torch and pitchforks!
Talk about rip-off -.-;

I've finally reached the point where people become "inspired" by my work. I'm a cool kid now.

Thanks for letting me know, lol @_@
Really amazing game, you should make a sequel, the story its truly interesting
I could not believe that this game is a scary game Initially.
But After playing, I swallowed my words XD

I tried to play the bootlegged version of Dreaming Mary... it made no sense to me at all, I think I'll just stick to playing Dreaming Mary xD
Much like the Quote Life is a beautiful lie while Death a horrid truth, this game shows both sides very well. I loved the underlying theme and suggestiveness of the game, and you pulled it off really well. It almost doesn't classify as a horror game until people manage to explore everything. then its true colors show. <3 I absolutely adored this game, even the puzzles, but the only puzzle I lothed was Foxy's. I'm not good at such games lol. 5/5.

I would like to see more from this series, maybe an actual horror game further exploring those dark themes which lead her to make the dreamland?
Thank you very much for playing! =D

I actually have considered something along this vein with a very Silent Hill-esque atmosphere, but I think it may work better as a short story or some such rather than a game for the sake of a game.

Thanks for the support, I'll keep brainstorming the rest of the series and hopefully start working on making more cool games!
Your game is excellent, by the way. Should've said that before. The quality of all of its individual pieces are top notch.
Finally going to add this to the review pile for November after I finishing playing and reviewing ReCrisis.

I’ve been wanting to play this game for quite some time now, but so many things have come up whenever I want to that I haven’t gotten the chance to do it. Well, this time – I will be playing and reviewing it for November, that’s for darn sure!

But all that pink is really going to hurt my eyes, though... >_<
Thanks very much nurvuss, I'm glad to hear that!
Also, I've just realized what word your name sounds like... clever. :'') *is slow

I hope you enjoy the game, Addit! And yeah, the pink, lol. Well, if you haven't seen any spoilers yet, I can assure you that not everything is pink =D

I'll look forward to any advice or critiques in your review!

And I thought that finding bad fanfic about it was really surprising, this is in another level altogether.
Why is nobody correcting them about the awesomeness that is the original game?
This is a very great game!! I love the art style , music and story as well even though it's a little too short and I had to repeately faced an almost exactly the same dialogues (in the 3 rooms.) and the same puzzles in order to get all endings and a bonus password.(Well,I managed to though.)

I wonder how you or your teammates could draw those sprites and tilesets in the game.

Overall,I really like your game!!
How to open the game on full scren?I dont know!
How to open the game on full screan? Please!Help me!
There's no need to double post. Press Alt+enter while the game is running to toggle full screen. Have fun!
I just played through Dreaming Mary yesterday.
I loved the art style. It was so well done and colorful.
The music was great and it was still humming in my head after I went to bed.
The atmosphere was so ... I don't know, disturbing ? In a good way.
The story was interesting. I'm kinda slow at figuring out what's going on in most games though, lol.
The fact the game was 2D surprised me as well, but it fit the game really well.

I expected it to be a bit longer! But you know what they say, quality over quantity. :D It left me wanting more!
I've played through many RPGMaker games and this is definitely one of the better ones out there.
Thank you all for playing!
And thank you Nirwanda for answering that question also XD

I actually didn't use tiles in the game and instead imported all of the backgrounds as character graphics (event graphics). This allows them to be any size and to stay stuck in one place, unlike images (unless you use the fixed image script).

Here's an example of what the editor looked like and also of one of the image sets I imported into character graphics.

Hey there!
Just wanted to let you know that I've posted a review for the game and it's pending. I really liked this!
