I grew up with a wolf.

I can't remember a time in my life where he wasn't a part of it. We travelled, ate, slept - did everything together. He is my father, brother and friend; the only one on whom I can rely. Our life together was full of joy and though there were cold winters and times when our stomachs would growl with hunger, we were fine because we knew we would have each others' backs.

Biggs and Wedge.

Wolf and Boy.

Always together.

Forever.

Snarling teeth ripping flesh as he stands in front of me, his hair on end. The scent of blood fills the air and I brandish the rusted knife as the leader of the pack leapt towards him.

Only one weapon against the pack, my tooth with which to attack, and there's a wild slash as I'm bowled over by heavy, hot body. Blood gushes from above, coating me in warmth, and a gargled snarl proves that my aim was true.

There's a snap as I try to retrieve my knife from the fallen foe. It's broken, useless to me. I scrabble for another weapon - anything to help Biggs in this fight - but the battle is already over. The pack leader has fallen and with his death the pack leaves - as fast and as silent in leaving as they were when they'd ambushed me.

I'm left with the body of a dead pack leader and the pain-filled whines of a fallen friend.

Biggs was so hurt he wouldn't even open his eyes. I carried the mass of my only friend and family in my arms as I ran, away from that place of death and the hunting lands of that pack. As day came we reached a clearing with a cave. Shelter was what we needed most and shelter was what it provided.

The place must have been used years ago by men, as there lay another knife and small axe near the entrance of the cave.

I gently placed Biggs down in the mouth of the cave and picked up the tools.

We had to survive.

It was my turn to be the hunter. "

Future update details!

First of all I'd like to thank everyone for the over 100 downloads of Wolf and Kid and the feedback and reviews we've gotten of the past week and four days. Now back to your future update detailing.

We created Wolf and Kid in 2 weeks 6 days and about 12 hours. From day 1 we had ideas that never made it to the final version even with extended time and corners were cut for somethings when time was ticking down. Here are just a few of the things you'll see in future updates.

The current focus of development is mainly graphical changes along with enhancements to game play that have been taken out of feedback and playthroughs along with new additions to the game that weren't in the Mcbacon Jam build.

Graphic changes
  • Additional Wedge portraits to give him a bit more emotion (Torsos are still being worked on).

  • Swapping out the VX Ace RTP itemset for a custom one, you can probably spot some new items in here we'll get around to that later though!

  • Full 8 directional sprites for Wedge, may not be implemented at first but it will be added.
  • In addition to the more matching icons I'll be implementing a more 16-bit fitting UI and HUD as well.

Gameplay
  • You all asked for it and we're SORT of giving it to you! A sprinting system will be implemented to the game to allow you to move faster for periods of time.
  • Libby will eventually be creating additional maps for all directions allowing more varying experience each playthough.
  • New resources have been added to the game as you can tell from the iconset change from above, as of now the two new (raw) resources are crystal chunks and bundled grass.
  • Armor, as of right now 3 different tiers of armors will be added and depending on which you are wearing it will affect how Wedge's sprite looks.

  • Arrows will be a bit more useful with the option of making stronger arrows or even poison arrows.
  • Additional work on the fishing system.

BGM and SFX
Since I'm working on a bit in this section of the game I might as well give some info.
  • SFX changes for herbs and berry bushes
  • Possibility of work on custom BGM to complement the ambiance sound
  • More variety in the ambiance sound to fit areas better, it currently only runs off of 4 different loops.

and more!
This isn't everything we have planned but it's just some keythings we're hoping you'll be looking forward to seeing in the future updates.

Thanks Indry! Yeah, we still have a few things to look at, movement speed being one of those. We had wanted to add some sounds at least to the introduction but had a hard time finding anything that fit properly so left it as it was in lieu of other stuff (though I'm sure we left in the option to skip it if you wanted).

Walking speed is tied up with time - the faster the speed the less time we could give to gather stuff. As it stands the balance is pretty much perfect. If you know what you're doing (second+ playthrough) then you can easily gather all there is to offer each day (sometimes with a little left over to spare, depending on what maps you get - yes, they're random each game).

The idea of four days and four directions is the cardinal idea and we probably won't be changing that. There might, in the future, be more days (or an indefinite survival mode) but the four directions and map restrictions (sizes, that is) will probably stay.

Anyway thanks for the feedback, we'll take some of the things you mentioned into consideration and look forward to watching your video when it's added!

I'm not a big fan of survival games, but, I played a bit of this. Biggest complaints I have is the obnoxiously slow walking speed (or maybe it just feels slow?) and how animals can reach the edge of the map, they drop an item, and getting a map transition instead.

Those complaints aside, it's a pretty solid game!

Thanks for playing Marrend! Yeah, we gotta fix that animal drop thing - we kept meaning to but it got put aside for other stuff that needed doing instead. I'll remember to check out what can be done to fix it though. Also, yeah, the walk speed is an issue, but it's tied up with the balance of game time. We'll talk about what can be done about it, though, and see if we can come up with some idea. I know Zig mentioned a possible stamina system which could be used for short dashing...

Played it a bit. Those are some cute portraits!
Oh, you have to use the keyboard to play (I usually use a game pad)
Rather do like the survival genre of games. Seems like a pretty open world, which is a plus. Relatively non-intrusive hub. Love that you can walk in eight directions (but could use diagonal walking graphics)
Unfortunately, I can't play games on my keyboard for very long without my fingers yelling at me, so I'll have to stop there.

Thanks for play Neok, even with a keyboard. ^.^
Yeah, char is looking in to diagonal graphics for Wedge. And glad you liked the hud - we wanted to make sure that it didn't get in the way of what was happening on the screen, so we're glad to hear it didn't. ^.^ Thanks for giving it a go and leaving soem feedback~

I uploaded the stream of my LP as media, it should be up soon. If not, you can see it here.
Thank you for playing it though I can't really say more than Libby has but I've been on it to fine tune the game the past few days (slowly but surely) and sound effects/music along with graphical stuff is something that I really am going to try and improve as of right now.

Just a little preview of what I have been working on though with graphics.
(Thumbnails won't work with Gyazo and I can't be bothered to go on tinypic >.>)
I just LP'id it... and um... I died in the first 10 minutes... To a single snake bite, and umm... *dumb*

Still, I did enjoy the game and I'll be playing again, making sure to arrow down these reptilian beasties!

Hahahah I'm just that unlucky. LOL

Son, I am so proud of the work that you have done on this project. Through the thick and thin of video-game production, I know that you and your team have dedicated time, work, and energy into this. To see you putting your work out into the world means so much to me. Aside from this, I could not be more excited to play this game. I have yet to have finished a rpg maker game, and I could not be more proud to have the first one be my son's. This is a very important moment in our lives, and words can not express how proud of you I am. And I would just like you to know that I am so proud and honored to be your father.
Wow this is amazing I feel like I'm on some kind of cruise ship!
