Welcome aboard the starship TsukuruNova 20003! In deep space, disaster strikes! The Firmament GL Plant on planet Greenshell 3, which provides the colonists with fresh, breathable air, is breaking down! Could it be a malfunction? An alien attack? Who knows? The crew of the magnificent TsukuruNova 20003 are sent to investigate!

You play as Special Operative Maelym Terraero, leader of the Hazardous Emergency Assault Recon Team. Together with Jean-Luc Alysner, a monolite-blade fencer and healokinesis acolyte, and LR-388, a combat heavy weapons robot, you must save the planet and get everyone breathing healthy air again!

This is an entry into the A Golden Week of RPG Maker 2003 event, where only RPG Maker 2003 RTP is allowed.

Post-Contest Version is Live!

I've got the Post-Contest Version finished and set as the main download! :D I'll still leave the contest version download in case anyone wants to play it. You can find it here.

Upgrades in the Post-Contest version:

  • Gave a big increase in agility to all allies and enemies (so the battles go faster. Each ally and enemy has approximately 200% the agility that they had originally)

  • Put more chests with Space Vials in them for MP restoration. The item shop and the shop at the Safe Zone both sell Space Vials, as well!

  • Toned down the enemies in the last two battles. Made the Princess' big special attacks hurt less.

  • Changed around a couple of music tracks.

  • Some minor other tweaks and additions.

If you get a chance to check out this new version, let me know what you think! ^_^ Thanks a lot!

Do you? I played through this just fine, but when I tried to play Her Dreams of Fire, the game stopped and told me I needed the RTP.

I was a dork and included the RTP files in my download, since with 2k3 they are so small (especially in comparison with VX Ace XD;;) and I was worried that people might not have the new English RTP yet. So theoretically, mine should work fine alone (I hope)

Poor me :(

Just ALMOST finished this game.
Really enjoyed everything but the end.

Thought I had reached the end and just finished beating up the last boss :)
Then up pops a bigger boss and me with no more HP filler uppers and ran out of SP/magic. Died big time :)

BUT, before I died, I really did enjoy killing things and running awasy from a few of them :)
I'm glad you were enjoying it! I made a page here with some tips for beating the last boss, if you're interested. I may have gone a bit overboard and made her too hard, and for that, I apologize ^^;;

Now you tell me??????????????????????????? :) :) :)

@nhubi, I'm a grinder from way back :) May have been about lev. 30.
I did enjoy it so may might try leveling up again and whippin' on that last lady:)

If there are any upgrades then maybe SPupgrade or refills could be sold in the shops :)

That's a good idea, Linkis! I'll add SP items in the shops to the post-contest version ^_^

HOT DAMN, then I can be reborn and whip up on the bad guy/girl as the case may be:)
This was super fun! I beat it at level 19! Afterwards, I thought, wait a second, wasn't there a cave in the upper-left of the world map? I never went there! So, I loaded my save and checked it out after.

I love the various references to Star Trek and other things you made too! And SPACE everything was really funny. Definitely the most fun game of the contest that I've tried so far!

I think I was around level 22 when I took on the final boss combo and won, whilst it wasn't an easy fight once I'd worked out the weaknesses of the enemies in the first round and targeted my attacks I was in much better shape to take on the last battle.

Oh and yeah, review pending.

Red, I got a similar message with this one, fairly early in, but I can't remember where but it was after an interaction with something. Either way it was a quick diversion and solved. I should have installed it in preparation anyway.

unity, quick question you've obviously bought this, does that include free upgrades? It's just I'm really disliking the alt-tab focus issue and I know Cherry is working on a fix for the next iteration, you guys won't need to buy it again for corrections like that will you?
I loved this game. I had a lot of fun playing and thought it was balanced perfectly. I tend to be a bit of an item hoarder so I had all my SP restoring items saved for the final boss :P.

I thought you did a really good job creating a sci-fi feel using only the RTP graphics! Very impressive.

If anyone else gets an error message like this saying they need RTP at some point, please let me know where you found it.

That's a good question. With Steam, once you buy something, you can download it as often as you like. So perhaps when I do the post-contest version, I should delete my copy of the official English 2k3 from my computer and re-download it through Steam, which I'm hoping will give me the most current copy, with the newest fixes implemented. Then when I export the game, (I hope) that the newest fixes will be in the latest copy. I don't know if that's how it works, but I figure it's worth a shot at least.

Thank you sooooo much ^____^ I'm super glad you liked it, and that the Sci-fi-ness came through even with the RTP limitations :DDDDD

I FEEL CHEATED

edit:

Just beat it. Not gonna do a formal review because i pretty much agree with 3.5! within the contest restraints i'd give it 4-4.5 but compared to rm* games in general, 3.5 is fitting.

shitty non-review (no spoilers):

THE GOOD:
+I cracked up multiple times, especially at the ending
+See the bad, but in general I enjoyed the battles. having to self-heal LR added a bit extra tension
+The dungeons never outstayed their welcome

THE BAD:
-I had to grind out 2 levels (despite not skipping anything) to L18 before i could beat the final boss. booooring, the battles aren't that fun at the end because you just spam plasma slicer and LR's beam cannon nuke
-a handful of typos, at the very least there's an unnecessary apostrophe in the ending scene
-pretty darn short -- which is TOTALLY FINE for a contest, but if this were a proper game it loses some stars because it would feel a bit too rushed. and i don't really like to rate things within confines because it makes the shitty 0-5 rating even worse to try to comprehend...
-the bed wasn't a space bed. c'mon.

THE SPACE:
everything but the bed. would be an A+ but you get an A
kinda weird that you only get ONE fresh water to sell for a paltry bit of cash in the whole game, unless i missed something?

overall i totally recommend it to people who want to laugh for 1.5-2 hours!

You missed something Craze, I found at least two fresh waters, one in the town and the other in the first room of the air producing plant. Though they should have been fresh SPACE water.

Thanks very much, Craze! Yeah, I'm going to be going back and making a post-contest version that makes the last battles easier. I'm glad you liked the humor! ^_^

Not sure what I was thinking with the water, really that whole week is kinda a blur of pure GAM MAK XD Before this, the quickest I'd ever made a game is in a month.
Just started playing and I gotta say I am amazed at what you were able to do with just the RTP! Great Work!

Really enjoy your game Unity, thanks for a fun time.

Of course, I still hate having to wait for the my energy bars to fill :(

Thanks! :D

Sorry about the wait on the ATB bars. I doubled the speed of enemies and allies and it didn't do much. I wonder if, in the future, battles would be smoother if I gave enemies low Agility but made up for it by making them hit extra hard. I'll have to see.

A very enjoyable short game :)
I played the contest version, not the updated version.

Feedback:

- The battle backgrounds change in the world map, that's cool, even if some of them don't have much to do with the setting, still great considering the limitations.
- I'm amazed at how good the dialog is for such a short time frame, high quality.
- The colony looked too "motionless" since most of the NPCs didn't move from the same spot, It's hard to make NPCs move fluidly enough for the player to keep track of them, but stationary NPCs just seemed boring to me.
- Encourages exploration! :D Just the fact that just about everthing is examinable is cool, plus a lot of the descriptions were fun.
- The colony lacked graphical details outside the buildings, this was probably because you used open buildings and thus had less different tiles to work with, but I'll still mention this.
- Inside the plant, from the upper level I'm able to examine pots and boxes in a lower level, per example the boxes directly north of me as I enter the plant, I should have to go down there to examine those.
- The same thing happens with battles, I can engage an enemy on a different ground level, but this would be hard to fix.
- I found LR-388 multi-target skills too strong, since a lot of enemies were vulnerable to these elements it made a lot of random battles too easy.
- Awesome enemy names! ...and names in general!
- The SPACE CHESTS contained very few Creds, in the West Cave I got 200 and 120 Creds from chests, I was getting that and sometimes more from the battles there, these chests were underwhelming.
- This is a small nitpick but the "Weapon, Armour, Item" signs outside the shop could be in the same order as the merchants selling the respective wares (Item, Weapon, Armour) :P
- I got this Phantasy Star IV vibe from the game, the way you had to find skills and obviously the game atmosphere. I also got a SaGa vibe since I had to use items to increase the HP/MP of the robot and due to the different character traits. A bit of Shadow Hearts too.
These are good things, BTW!
- I beat the game at level 18, I didn't grind, I found the battles well balanced, the story was well written and interessting, the story/dialog/text inside the ship is the kind of stuff imagination is made of, I didn't particularly like the villain since he only appears twice and lacked development, wait, what the hell am I talking about? ..."ONE WEEK"! So it's cool and works great in the end.
- The title screen is very simple but looks good, bonus points for using the RPG Maker logo that comes with each default title image.
- I used 3 healing items throughout the game, I didn't need to use any other healing items except for the last battle (in that one I used SP/HP/status healing items, a lot), I never had to use a reviving item or skill, do what you will about this piece of feedback.
- Don't know if you did this on purpose but you used the wrong charset for Maelyn at the end of the game.
- In the Greenshell 3 intro (planet panorama map) it would sound better if the music fades in before teleporting into the ship.
- So you even managed to make some custom animations!? How did... What the... Time! Do you use it differently?
- Improving each character felt great, I liked finding new skills and status increasing items for my robot!
- The overall presentation of the game was well thought out, the intro and credits, the ending using somewhat "still images", good use of panoramas (lucky you there's plenty of RTP space stuff going around :P ) and RTP music.
- The way you mapped the world map made it look so compact and functional.
- All in all it's very enjoyable, I don't have much feedback to give since most stuff was spot on.
Everything is so well fleshed out! For the time frame it really is an achievement.
I don't wanna exaggerate with all this positive feedback, but great work unity! :D

Thank you very much for the feedback, iddalai! :DDD I'm glad you enjoyed it, and I'll fix some of the things you mentioned, like for example I totally missed the fact that I used the wrong sprite there! XD

As for me getting everything done, I actually had some good luck in bad luck: I had hurt my foot and had to take a few days off of work, which gave me extra time to polish stuff. I guess it was a blessing in disguise ^_^

That sounds like every game I've ever developed ever. I got a concussion working on Soul Sunder, I burned my hand useless for Remnants of Isolation... ugh. I'm glad your injury allowed you to work on your game!
