Steamrolling Through Chapter 3 and New Music!

You probably won't believe me, but I actually had every intention of posting these blogs on the 1st of every month. At least I'm posting once a month, but I always feel on a roll in development when I'm supposed to be blogging that I can't turn away. Anyway, here I am now ready to update. So let's catch you up!

Everything up to the end of chapter 2 is done and implemented. A build has been sent out to half the testers on the list, so I'm awaiting feedback from them before sending it to the other half. In the meantime, I've been busy working on chapter 3 and beyond. All the components of Aeyr 3 are finished (maps, dialogue, etc.), I just need to put them together. Mia 3's dialogue is written but still needs editing, 70% of the maps are done, but I still need to create the battles.

The entrance to castle Vergio in Aeyr 3.

Chapter 3 is more story-heavy than the others, so there's more work needed on the writing than the battles. Since writing is my favorite part of developing the game and the story is pinned down minus the dialogue itself, I'll be able to get chapter 3 done much faster than previous chapters. My goal is to have all of chapter 3 playable by the end of this month. With school starting up again in two weeks, work will slow down again, but I've blasted past my planned goal for the summer, and there's still plenty of time to keep this pace going!

Music has been coming along well. Eric Ramos has been wonderful to work with. He brings a lot of interesting ideas to tell the story via music. Here's the latest piece from him:

This will replace the track in the demo whenever Aeyr fights a Black Miasma Spout. Mia also as her own battle theme, but I'll wait until the demo comes out and let you listen to it then. If you recall a previous blog where I showed off the character themes for Aeyr, Mia, and Amalie, you may hear some similar melodies in Aeyr's theme in this piece. This musical motif is kept up throughout the OST, with character themes mixing with others to help reinforce their relationships to those who listen carefully. It's super exciting to work with him!

Summer has been wonderful for work on PotF. I believe I was barely through Aeyr 2 at the start of summer, but now here I am more than halfway through chapter 3! I knew development was going to get faster as time went on, and to see tangible progress is really inspiring! I can't thank you all enough for sticking around throughout development. It really means a lot that you've kept with it for so long! I'll be back next month, perhaps with the reveal of the final party member.

Neat! I'm glad to hear you've been able to make so much progress, even more than you anticipated yourself. I didn't think that was even possible in game development.

Leitmotifs are a great way of enhancing a story's atmosphere and memorability, so getting an impression of the new music is definitely exciting, too. I'm looking forward to seeing - and hearing - what comes next!

Yep! Green was the primary color of choice when designing Vergio's aesthetics.

Believe me, I'm as surprised as you. Delays happen often, but the reverse is certainly possible. There's about a 100:1 ratio of unexpected delays vs. unexpected progress.

Glad you like it! Hope the rest of the content meets expectations!
There is some interesting information in that screenshot. It looks way more cheerful than the rest of the game (seriously, look at the rest of the images) suggesting that this place belongs to someone who does very well despite the state of the world or at least used to do well.

The music sounded very appropriate when imagining a Black Miasma Spout fight.
