Full Title:
Iron Gaia Part I:
Where Angels Fear To Tread

As the amnesiac test subject designated Number 898462138069001 (as you later learn, structural engineer Armand Carter) you awaken aboard the enigmatic Iron Gaia mobile space station, your memories shattered.

As the only human awake on board the rapidly decaying station, controlled by an insane artificial intelligence with delusions of deification, is up to you to unravel the mystery of your own identity, and to answer the crucial question: what is the Iron Gaia?

Its final version released in 2004, Iron Gaia is the first half of an epic, story-driven science fiction RPG adventure, Iron Gaia packs custom skills, great storytelling, metaphysical angst, memorable characters, unique minigames, a truly vast dungeon crawl into one complete, and if we are to be honest with ourselves, some of the worst graphics you've seen in a long, long time into a full length jRPG style roleplaying game.

Its genre, self-coined, is apocalyptic spacepunk, combining the cheesy high-action grandeur of space opera and the dark, gritty film noir stylings of cyberpunk.

The second half of this game, a long time in the planning, was eventually canceled due to fatal hype, disappointment, overextended ambitions, and impossible to meet expectations. The game did go on to spawn one full-length sequel (a side story, or if you must be all Japaneezy about it, gaiden) a (much prettier) action-RPG made with RPG Maker 2003, three novellas and one complete novel, hundreds of pages of fiction and fan art, and a three year campaign of group story-telling and experimental theater, all of them set over a thousand years in the future posited by this game. The never-completed direct sequel serves as the missing piece in a long, enigmatic, deep and complicated fictional history that this game was the starting point of.

IF...you liked any Max McGee games
AND...you like Science Fiction

AND...you haven't played this yet...

you might be in for a heck of a treat.

I lied.

"I... I left in a sudden rush
And never said why
You... couldn't know
That I had no goodbyes..."

"I'll call you when the time is right
Are you in or are you out?
For them all to know the end of us all."

"In our sleep, there's more to this nightmare.
Will she beg for your mercy?"

"These are the days. The end complete.
The world still turning to the sound of the suffering.
You are the jury, we are the saints.

Our minds divide, the past repeats.
A war still brewing in the hearts of those we once bled.
I am the knowing, the living dead.

Dig deeper, remember
All you've been and all you've left behind.
Wave goodbye, my dear.
Dig deeper, remember
All you've been and all you've left behind.
Welcome home, my dear."

"I've been cautious with the words I extend.
Allow this year before the world starts to end.

"and well let's say I am doing small and big jump now and then. "

Itsame, totally inappropriate in this setting/milieu! I have no idea I was thinking but then again I was like 14 or something. Good times.

Thinking of replaying this, I mean, got to make a review for my favourite indie game -^.^-
So I've beaten Iron Gaia, and it took me awhile to decipher what exactly was going on, and it looks like in the end there was a simple conclusion..though unexpected.

The story was pretty good, and this game is one of the more unique games for RM-2000 for it's time, though I can't figure how it was controversial (what you do? lol). Gameplay..well I kind of poked around, and I played hard mode right off the bat, and so I got to get the full experience. Usually I tend to stay away from RM-2000 type games because most of them tend to be very bad, but this one was abit more different than what I was accustomed to. I say this game gets...maybe 4/5 from me, I think there could be some improvements, and what was up with the beginning of the game since that particular scene was talking in past-tense if I'm understanding it correctly.

Only one bug found:
After the train battle, there's a chance the character will permanently face in one direction, annoying bug, but not game-breaking.

After I beaten the game, decided to to poke around in the game to see if I missed anything, and I noticed there was a 2nd ending that I did not see though I don't know what specific requirements were to get that one...though I'm guessing that ending was scrapped because of another scene that had no dialogue in it.

@Kaliesto:

First off, there is a review feature on this site u know : P

Secondly, it's always nice to see this old relic getting some praise and love. It makes my bygone teenage self very happy. So thank you. That said, I made this game between 2001 and 2004 when I was between 15 and 18 years old. The amount I've grown as a game developer and as a storyteller in the decade since then, as I've become an adult and a creative professional, is so vast as to be almost immeasurable.

And it's always a slightly surreal experience to receive new feedback on a piece of juvenilia: something created by a version of me so much younger than myself as to be almost unrecognizable as the same person.

Anyway...

The story was pretty good, and this game is one of the more unique games for RM-2000 for it's time, though I can't figure how it was controversial (what you do? lol).

Once again, thank you.

Actually, there was nothing controversial whatsoever about Iron Gaia Part I: Where Angels Fear To Tread. The controversy surrounding Iron Gaia Part II: Mana From Heaven is quite another story. A very long, very old story. : )

Finally, a piece of trivia: the New Game+/Hard Mode was as I recall almost completely untested (I set a release date for myself and I wanted to make it, so I cut some corners), and is probably buggy as all get out.

That said, there are two endings in the "main game" which are both canonical, and which ending cutscenes you get depends solely on a single dialogue choice made right before the final boss. There is also a third "Hard Mode Only" ending that is complete non-canonical.

I went to go play this just now and ended up with the same "cannot open file Vehicle" error that was mentioned earlier but I do indeed have the RTP. Any ideas?

Turns out I didn't have both. Though I've downloaded the RTPe.zip a few times since you linked to it here and it keeps coming in as a 1.12mb file that won't extract with any of my three extractors (win7 default, 7zip and winrar).

I tried the 1st option on that site and it says my OS is unsupported. I switched compatibility mode and that let it install but even in compatibility mode for the game it still doesn't find the vehicle.

Too much hassle when there's no shortage of games to play so I'm moving on. Thanks for the support though. That was right cool of you.
I have a question.. could you tell me how to change the font of the game it's for me too hard to read :/
