Träumerei is an original Horror RPG game created in VX Ace. The game is focused on exploration, story, and characters. It contains original art, graphics, and sprites.

CHAPTER 0-Demo

Original Release Date: June 19, 2017

NOTE: Chapter 0 was merely a practice game I made in-order to test out RPGM VX Ace. It was an experimental game, so the sprites/backgrounds look a bit different here as well. It is not canon.

CHAPTER 1-Träumerei

Original Release Date: March 8, 2019

Once upon a time, beneath dreary branches obscuring a crimson sky, there lived a reclusive vampire who would love nothing more than to sleep, read, or die. After a certain tragedy befell him, the vampire, Noël Rousseau, resolved to hide himself away from the world. Locking himself away in a decaying house for nearly half a century with only his grandmother’s beloved books and decrepit button-eyed dolls for company, he was content……

Until…he meets a cheerful, rosy eyed girl in the outskirts of the woods one dark, dreary day. Upon following the strange girl, Noël realizes there was more to his XXXX’s death beneath the surface.

“Je suis perdu…aide moi……”

CHAPTER 2-For Whom the Bell Tolls

Original Release Date: July 28, 2019

The year is 1524 A.D., and self proclaimed exorcist Noël Rousseau has been wandering across a country within a state of constant fall and autumn leaves. Wracked with guilt and plagued with vague memories of his previous life, idealistic and bizarrely inane Noël has made it his goal in life to search for the source of his problems–his grandmother, XXXX.

Donning a witch doctor mask, the lone traveler comes across a peculiar town harboring its own dark secrets…and the mournful spirit of an executed witch who appears to have connections with his long-forgotten past……

"The road to hell is paved with good intentions."

CHAPTER 3-Moonlight Circus

Original Release Date: January 10, 2020

Losing someone is a terrible, indescribable experience. The feeling of one day waking up to realize your loved one is not there and you’ll never see them again…it’s maddening. It’s like walking in a forest. Whichever way you go, all you see are trees. Light peeks out from the treetops, but it’s only a slight sliver. The forest is not quite bright, but not dark, either. Distantly, you are aware that there is kindness, and light, and laughter somewhere, far, far away…

Noël’s existence has been filled with confusion and loss. That much is certain. There is not much he understands about himself or others, but…all he has even known are the sense of pervasive loneliness and isolation. Upon visiting a ‘Moonlight Circus’, he meets a certain familiar grim reaper who proposes a game……

“You may have memories, but they pale in-comparison to seeing them everyday—to know that they still breathe.”

CHAPTER 4-Wayward

Original Release Date: July 3, 2020

Despite how you may feel, your life is not your own. It is an amalgamation of every experience you’ve had; every person you have ever met or will meet— time will not stop for anyone, not even a reclusive vampire who has all but cut himself away from the world and everyone he has ever known. After meeting an eerily familiar reaper, Noël finds himself at a crossroad. Should he continue down the path he had set forth on, or will he carve out a new ending for himself?

Perhaps the vampire has been even more lost than he realized. He may have forgotten those he had loved and the land that he came from, but it does not matter. Memories are of no use to him.

"If you could forsake all that you have ever known for a brighter future, would you?"

Is anyone else also having trouble with uploading the demo file?
I was able to unpack it, but not play it.
I searched up the error and it seems like the "ä" in the folder name was messing it up. I switched "ä" with a regular "a" and it worked.
Solution was found here.
So when you upload the game file just make sure there are no special or foreign characters or else it may not work on everyone's system.

Everyone here is my hero.

Seriously, I can't believe that was the main problem.

Hey Veynn! Good to see that you've posted the demo. The art is really great and the maps are nicely made! Noel is a nice character. I actually smiled at a couple of his lines because his personality is really like that of kuuderes and I enjoyed him overall.

The atmosphere was really nice. I liked the change of the atmosphere after a certain event. After the event though, and the thing after that (trying to avoid spoilers) is that the end of the demo? It left me sort of confused. But it is just a demo, so I'm sure there will be more it unless I missed something.

I do have some critique for the game though.
1. As soon as I started playing the first thing that I noticed was the idle animation. The sprite looks great when walking, however it immediately turns into awkward when you stop walking. I'm really unsure why you used this animation in contrast to this one.

Another issue I did find was that if Noel walks down there is a small black dash on the top right. This can be easily fixed though.

2. I'm not sure if this is just me, but I think the window clashes with text. The window is really dark, however, I think if you lightened it up a bit, or even just made the text bigger, the issue would be fixed.

3. The space is really limited the first map. I couldn't understand why I wasn't able to walk behind the pillows even though there was a clear walk way. Also Noel is standing on a chair in one of the paths.

Other than those things I pointed out, I think that what you're making right now definitely has potential! I look forward to the full game!

Hi-ya Nedras~! Thank you! \>u</
I was a bit worried of how people would perceive Noel considering you only see a small part of his personality here. Hahah, he's actually pretty silly at times (which isn't apparent here...).

The demo ends once Annabelle's portrait appears talking about the end of the demo.
It was originally supposed to be much, much longer, but then I realized it would have stopped right at a cliffhanger as opposed to this. And, Spring Break wouldn't be long enough for me to complete a longer demo.

1. One of my friends thought it looked like he was out of breath running away from Annabelle so I thought it would be less awkward to do an animation with him standing around while waving his arms.

2. I've been thinking about changing the window, but I'm really attached to this one (I'm really fond of checkered patterns!) to the point I just wanted to use it regardless.

I'll be changing it up for the actual game since it blends in with the background/text a bit too much.

3. In the kitchen Noel's also standing in blank space if you look closely. Some of the maps had this problem since I drew all of these instantly without checking them on a grid. And, I forgot to correct that chair.

Thank you for the critique~!! (▰∀◕)ノ

Yeeep! His family's really superstitious.
I just played through the demo. It's short but sweet, your sense of atmosphere is really nice and I love the look of the maps!

Some things I noticed:

•Noël's idle animation looks a bit awkward, but this was already mentioned. Honestly I think if you could possibly just slow it down a bit, it'd look better! From behind it looks like he's doing a little dance. Cute...

•I don't know if the fact you can take unlimited candies and pastries is intentional. If it is, I'm so happy. I'm 6 and I love silly things like that. Please imagine Noël running through the rest of the game carrying 99 candies and 99 macaroons.

•I'll admit I'm a dirty cheater and I had to look at the above Youtube video to get how you leave the first room which may be partially from the mapping and partially me being a big dumb. There's ways to make distinctions between what object Noël interacts with depending on what direction you face if you add a conditional branch to the event and set it, for example, that he can only interact with the bottom two bookshelves in his room when he's actually facing down. I think I just didn't realize the toy chest wasn't part of the bed though.

•You can keep checking the pantry after you get the water from it the first time. When you do, it erases the lighting of the map and also changes the font. It's a small thing but I noticed it so I thought I'd let you know! (You can also get infinite water this way)

•I got caught in a loop after using the scissors on the magpie. If you leave the balcony, you can't interact with anything unless you go back to the room and leave. I assume that's intentional so that you have to go back to Noël's room. But I didn't realize you're supposed to go to sleep, so I left his room and then I could check everything again. I tried entering the locked room and saw the message about checking on the magpie and was like ???. So I went back onto the balcony and there Mr. Magpie was again. I think I accidentally murdered that bird in cold blood three times before I realized I should probably not be doing that and I'm doing something wrong... (I know I'm getting long-winded but there should be ways to activate switches so that once you kill the magpie, the event won't reappear even when you enter and exit the room at the end)

•A really small thing: if you push X instead of confirming using the scissors on the magpie, the event will let you exit out and will also not erase the textbox image.

I KNOW... THAT SEEMS LIKE A LOT but I'm excited to see where you take this game and I'm really interested by what you've got so far! Keep it up and go for the gold!
I love the art style but why does are boy look so androgynous is that just your style or there story reason for it?

The demo was originally supposed to be much longer, but I wanted to release it during Spring Break. Also, I may end up redrawing/expanding the woods again so that'll take awhile.

I'm probably going to update his sprite once I get to drawing the NPCs. I was supposed to draw the magpie, but then it would have ended up as a giant semicircle of feathers with dots for eyes.

It was intentional; there was going to be more different types of pastries/candies but then I was like, "how is he even supposed to carry all of this?" XD

I am pretty sure that was the mapping.

Aaaah, thank you for telling me!! I never even noticed the lighting gets erased! That was the main thing I was trying to avoid.

That poor bird.
Thank you for telling me about the looping event! I need to fix that soon!

Eeeeee, thank you!! ≧◡≦ It's fine; my reasons for uploading this was to see what I'd need to improve on.

It's just my art-style. Then again, I'm really into drawing cute hair-ornaments for all my OCs, so that's not going to change any time soon!

For example, the guy in my avatar is supposed to be 25.
Hi, I played your demo and I really find the art, the design and perspective interesting.

A few bugs I ran into:

-If you enter your room after having killed the magpie and you go back and check the door in the hallway to the left, the magpie is back on the balcony.

-If you click on stuff to the right for example in corners sometimes you get the text for stuff above. happened in hallways with the pictures.

- I did not even need to get the scissors, when I reentered I just magically had them^^

- And not a bug, but I guess when you go to the right first and Noel talks about water for "him" it is a bit weird since we do not know about the thirsty animal yet^^

Except for that it looked really interesting and I would love to see what the game will have to offer.

P.S: Shilling for my LP:

Some players told me about that. I'm still not entirely sure what happened there; I think I wrote the dialogue/events as I went on and just went back and forth.

Thank you for telling me~! \>u</ One of my friends pointed that out and taught me how to fix it. Hopefully I'll remember how to do that.

That actually is a bug. It's exactly the same thing with the bird from the first bullet.

((Oh yeah, running is allowed almost everywhere except Noel's house for minor reasons.

Thank you for playing; I hope to not disappoint! And nice LP video as well! :D

Pssst, Veynn. Your short description/tag line of your game has an extra quotation mark at the end. I think you meant to either put one in the beginning or delete the one at the end of the tag line. I'm not crazy, I just wanted to let you know.

"We're all mad here." I couldn't resist~

Okay, it took a lot longer to get out of the first room than it should have. Partly 'cause I'm stupid in thinking that you have to go in front of--the window, the opened red herring book of fables, the vase of brittle roses, bookshelves, the window--something and try using any items in the inventory on them (AKA keep using items on everything until something works and you make progress 'cause you have no idea what you're doing) but also because
Books were blocking the way to the cabinet with the axe in it. I had to stand to the left corner of it to access it. Not the left side of it since the interaction spot overlaps at that point to get me the examine bed dialogue instead. I shouldn't have assumed I couldn't interact with the cabinet when that happened but instead tried harder to reach it. Like Nedras said, those books and pillows really get in your way. You might have a cute face Noel but that doesn't excuse you not picking up after yourself!

Anyway, what do you do when you're given an axe? Chop down the locked door of course! Though for some reason I first had to examine the right side ('cause the left is just examining the cabinet) of the window to see if the Magpie was still there before I could do that.

So I finally succeeded in leaving my room! I feel so accomplished. Mankind will speak of this for future generations to come! Okay, dramatics aside, clearly there is something wrong with this family if they lock a child in his room (just realized the significance of the lock being on the outside of the room). Sadly, the axe broke and ruined my plans of going on an ax-crazy murder spree. Drats.

The first I noticed about this mansion... it's dark! Either they've boarded up their windows, closed all the curtains, or are cheapskates when it comes to paying the electric bills 'cause you can barely make out any details in those hallways.

So I was then tasked by the Magpie to fetch it a glass of water. Simple enough where even a complete idiot such as myself couldn't possibly fail! Surely it would be easier than escaping my room. I was proven right though I am slightly concerned that I could not walk around the table on its upper side and had to instead walk all the way around the bottom side. Sure, it doesn't take that much more time but it's the principal of the matter.

So I gave the Magpie the water. Then Noel was scripted to leave the balcony and somehow I was supposed to construe from the dot dot dot what to do next. Luckily for him, I am well versed in that language and translating it revealed that he had suddenly developed an inexplicable desire for stabbing feathered creatures. I suppose it's customary to leave and then immediately come back before you kill someone but I'm not French/German like he is so I wouldn't know. So Noel pulls out not his hunting knife but scissors out of nowhere. Then he contemplates self-harm. Apparently he is a cutter. Prompting to do so results in him experiencing the blissful feeling that I've only ever read of. Unfortunately, he wasn't careful and cut an artery and bled to death.

Choosing no will make Noel murder that bird. I don't find this disturbing at all. It was the right thing to do. Otherwise, that Magpie would have gone on to become intelligent enough to start a bird school which is for birds.

But this was just another typical day in the life of the Albino Russian Dwarf. With his goal accomplished, he then proceeded to return to his room and take a well-deserved break. He didn't lose any sleep over what he did. Later, Noel was woken by a maid who informed him that dinner was ready. Tonight's menu? Roasted magpie. Food always tastes better when you're the one who killed it and Noel did work up quite an appetite fattening up that poultry under the pretense of helping it and then butchering it without remorse. The bookworm thought he did a good job but Granny was not impressed. She showed her displeasure by slapping him on his un-bandaged cheek, leaving a bruise that would swell later and have to be bandaged. She then shrieked "Get back in the kitchen and make me a sandwich! Also, no supper tonight!"

So Noel went to the kitchen. But there he met his arch-nemesis... the maid. Ooohhh, but this wasn't your average everyday maid. This was a blue-haired, red-eyed crossdressing pigeon boy meido! Sparks flew as the traps glared at each other. You see, in this world there CAN ONLY BE ONE! What followed was an epic ultimate showdown of ultimate destiny that would forever go down in history as the greatest modelling competition. There are many variations of the tale but all agree on one thing... the few lucky spectators died of nosebleeds caused by viewing the event. There are heretics however who believe it was just an urban legend. Their argument? "Pics or it didn't happen." Many had to concede to that logic. And that's why the previous maid got replaced by Annabelle.

And so ends HikiNeet's abridged interpretation of the demo. And if you're asking "When did the scene after Noel went to sleep happen?" Well, it didn't. I just made that up.

Oh, and Noel should really get those shelves and books dusted and the books on the floor picked up. He must quite lazy if he can't even take care of them. He is a disgrace to avid readers everywhere! Though I'm kind of the last person who should be saying that since my literary possessions are in the same state. I can say from experience that dust bunnies aren't something you should be looking forward to on your pages.

You sure like drawing boys in frilly and lacy clothing... Not that I'm complaining, hehe. This does make me wonder about their choice of undergarments... Err, anyway! I checked out your Facebook and Tumblr. That Noel in a wedding dress (made me think of Reimu Hakurei and then Flandre Scarlet) and dem fishnet stockings... Strutting around in those lacy boots--a performance further accentuated by how much leg he's showing--he's just asking to be kidnapped! The Hunger Games fanart just leads credence to him being unhinged. It's always the cute and quiet ones!

The way he holds that red book reminds of Allen from Alice Mare. In fact, they both happen to wear suspenders and are usually sporting a stoic expression. If we take it even further, Letty from the same series also has the same taste in coats and ribbons (even if they're not the same color).

I hope to see some animal-eared/tailed boys since you wrote that he find himself in a dark 'Wonderland' (The journal lied; there are no illustrations nor can you read it). Yeeessssss, a Cheshire Cat and White Rabbit--Wait, we already have the latter in the form of Noel, hehe~

"Oh! What a cute little bunny rabbit. Just what I always wanted: my own little bunny rabbit. I will name him George and I will hug him and pet him and squeeze him. And rub him and caress him and stroke him and cuddle him so he will never feel rejected or lack for love."

Err, so have I proven myself worthy of joining the Noel Stalking Appreciation Fan Club yet? I saw the sprites for Azelle and Rue by the way. They look nice.

I see that you like 1BitHeart if the fanart you drew of the main character was any indication. Nanashi is indeed very kawaii~ I actually haven't finished that game. You see, when I first learned of it only two chapters were out. The game's long been complete now though. I've just never gotten around to doing it. I'll get back to you on my favorite character(s) if I don't forget to do so. The places in that game are so beautiful, the soundtrack wonderful to listen to, and the character designs are cute.

Thanks for having the DETERMINATION to get through my loquacious post. Here's a Pokemon Gijinka Trap for all your troubles. I found it while surfing the web and I thought it might interest you. Who knows? Maybe it'll inspire you. Keep up the good work!

Sorry!! The book wasn't supposed to be a red herring, I just wanted to add random stuff so the room wouldn't look too empty.
I'll redo the intro gameplay for the first chapter.

Thank you for informing me; I'll fix up the maps. I can't really get rid of the pillows/books, but I can resize/move them so there's more room to walk. This was a problem in the kitchen as well.

I think there's something wrong with the family for not bothering to dust anything. Exactly why are all those bookshelves so old and dusty? It can't be that hard to clean them, right?
And that is why the axe is there; Noel can just break windows/doors everytime he wants to leave.

Such cheapskates.

Oh, the scissors were in his cabinet.

Uhmmmm, that is certainly a descriptive way of phrasing that. XD I'm starting to feel this is going to become what one would refer to as a "ham and cheese RPG." Well, according to Tumblr at the very least!
The demo is filled with bad choices and regret.
Kinda like life.
Just like life.
It's a life and death simulator.
With excessive cruelty to eyeless birds.
And lots and lots of pastries. That will dissipate into a neverending torrent of fear and regrets.
Such is the tale of life.
What joy.

Someone just had to sneak in a Hatoful Boyfriend reference.
I only checked the doctor's route.

Geez, everyone's making his grandmother out to be much more horrible than she actually is!
But, locking your grandson in his room would definitely not earn her any points.
Save that poor kid. Really.

Andddd, more Hatoful Boyfriend references.

And, another. Wow, who knew Noel would get his very own rival? They grow up so fast.

Noel's too short to reach any of them. Even if he stood on a stool, he wouldn't be able to reach the topmost books. Which is fine because he had read those back when they were on lower shelves.

It's more of a personal preference; I draw all my OCs in frilly outfits with cute hair accessories.
Actually, they all seem to wear whatever they want. They're free to like whoever/wear whatever they want in-exchange for death, death, and more death in every corner.
That wedding illustration was a request. Granted, I maaaay have drawn it too frilly.

They'd probably just wind up having a staring contest.
And then Chelsy would walk in only to run out screaming in terror because how are they not blinking?

I once considered giving Noel sheep horns, but I scrapped that idea.
There are animal-eared girls/boys, but none of them are main, main characters.

However, in a minor-ish project that's related to this, there's a pink-haired catboy:

And this is why Noel carries around a hunting knife. 8D
He already has Annabelle. XDD

Thank you! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧ They're the main characters as well; I just need to draw their portraits.
Azelle doesn't get enough attention; I need to draw him more.

I found out about the game a day or two after Manlybadasshero released an LP of the first chapter.
However, I only watched the first chapter. I still need to catch up.
Yeah, Miwashiba's my favorite gamedeveloper! \>u</
Her character designs and plot are all amazing!!

He's so cute!!
But I'm actually not into traps; Noel's design is just reminiscent of how he used to be a Red Riding Hood-esque character. And Red. From Pokemon.
Because he's cool.
Thank you~!! Your post was really humorous. XDD
It ok buddy it trial and error but I do love art style!!!
