Solid effort but not perfect

I was interested in this game as soon as I saw the icon and title. The prospects of a tournament style game lured me, and I immediately added it to my to-play list. The team aspect was also something that I thought would be fun, since I always enjoy some degree of customization. Still, I was a bit weary, as many games promise loads of interesting features only to fizzle out.

First off, the game is a load of fun. There are a lot of good things I could say about it, but that's the most important. The combat is smooth, the difficulty curve is just at the right angle, there's an element of strategy present very early on, there's a bunch of customization options, overall, it's a solid experience.

I like that there are reasons to do each league more than once, and it doesn't just boil down to grinding. I had no problem doing a league twice, or even several times when it came to the Switch league simply due to how fun it was. Furthermore, the fact that you're given rewards for exploring the league arena really adds something to what would otherwise be a pretty linear concept.

The presentation is good enough, and I liked the characters too. I liked the little touches of humor and the fact that it's not always the exact same challenge (The Switch league, the bat mini game). I liked the fan mechanic, and the recruitment mechanic.

What I didn't like was the text. Besides being riddled with grammatical and spelling errors, the dialogue is unnatural, and sounds awkward more often than not. It was a bit of a chore to get through the longer sections of text. I would recommend getting a proofreader.

I have other nitpicks. Monsters will completely change from their overworld sprites to their in battle artwork. While this would be fine if there weren't overworld sprites available for the monsters in question, sometimes it gets ridiculous. In one round, a character that's displayed as a Ghostly might turn out to be 3 Orcs. Why not use the Orc sprite? If it's a question of randomization, why not ensure that all possible battles have a Ghostly in them? Most egregiously, in one battle, the main character comments on fighting a Slimy, a callback to the start of the game, only for the battle proper to start and reveal we're actually fighting a werewolf. It's not a question of gameplay, but it's immersion breaking.

The mapping also leaves some to be desired, always a bit bigger and sparse than needed.

Overall, it's a solid game, but not perfect. On the February 21st 2016 build, I played up to the Advanced League for two hours of gameplay. I will definitely keep an eye on this game, and might even continue playing.

Hi Supersonicsoda,

Thanks for the nice review it really well made and I really agree with your points.
It's true that the text and dialogues need to get better and I will try to work more with people who have english for first language. (Mine is french so I'm doing my best right now and try to get better for the game and in general)

Yuou have a good point about world sprite and monster, I should try to make it work better so it not completely broke the immersion of the game. Thanks for your review, I hope you will continue to play the game. Because there is a lot more then the Advanced League with some nice surprise if you continue your quest.

If will continue my work on this project and I really hope I will have a complete review from you for the whole content of the game. Finally, if you have any other feedback about the game and how improve it, just let me know :)

thx!
