Stream of coniousness - terms

Some time ago, there was a thread that...well, to be honest, I forget a lot of details! However, it involved asking how to go about doing a science fiction game. I definitely recall adding a comment to the thread, and pointing to this game. My memory continues to be fuzzy, but, the portion of response that I remember most is a comment about "religious overtones" in this game.

Which made me quirk an eyebrow then, wondering what the hell the guy was even talking about. It's slowly occurring to me that term "God Nakaishi" might be what he was talking about, which... well, it's not intended to be a reference to religion at all! It's more the term is a delineation of the difference between, like, say, a Gear versus an Omnigear in Xenogears, or a mobile suit make out of a Gundanium (or alloy thereof) versus one that isn't in Gundam.

Maybe this is merely an additional instance of me being worried about nothing, but, the thought has occurred to me to change the term. A few ideas have started floating in my head, which I will now share with you.

  • Omninakaiashi

This idea takes it's queues from the Xenogears "upgrade" from Gear to Omnigear. On closer inspection, this term... might be a bit much!

  • Galax

This idea takes it's queue from Gundam, in which the metal the nakaishi is made out of is what sepreates it from the rest. Though, wait, aren't all nakaishi made out of this stuff, or an alloy thereof? So, maybe it's a matter of what the galaxium-to-steel ratio of the alloy used?

  • Galax-Nakaishi

This term could either be considered a combination of the previous two ideas, or as an extension of the second idea.

  • ????

I'm absolutely open for suggestions/comments in this regard, even if it's "Marrend, you worry to much". Let me know what you think!

Yay for getting advice from somebody who found out this game exists about 3 minutes ago.

To sidestep the issue entirely, change the name. IMO just not to any of the examples you gave but that's just my preference.

Just as an aside, I think you shouldn't change God Nakaishi at all. You're clearly harkening back to the anime mecha space operas and that's a super common way to name the advanced version. From what I see, it denotes power, not specifically religion. We don't campaign to change God Mode to something "less offensive." You shouldn't have to change your God Nakaishi

If it's a huge problem, since there's a heavy Japanese feel to it already you can just go with Shin Nakaishi, Nakaishi Zero or Cho Nakaishi. Other possibilities I like are a Nakaishi Neos, Brave Nakaishi and Nakaishi Emerge.

Apart from the Galax mineral, are there any other traits or themes your mecha use? For one of my very old and failed projects my mecha were music-influenced so their upgraded versions used Italian musical terms of increasing emphasis... and then Raxephon came out and I felt validated:)

So yeah, you don't need to change anything but if you do, you can have much more impact by beng unique in your renaming.

The number one reason I posted this was to get opinions! In that respect, thanks for sharing!

I like some of the suggestions you're putting forth. I'm pretty partial to Nakaishi Zero or, as a variant on a suggestion, Neo Nakaishi. However, as we both mention, I might be over-worrying about this as well!

From the perspective of someone who isn't exactly religious: When reading the word "God" in a game without any explicit ties to a religious deity, the first terms that typically come to mind are variations of, "Overlord," "Invincible," and "all-powerful." If that is your intent, then I think you should keep the name as it is.

From the description of your game, the only information I see about the God Nakaishi is that it's an extremely powerful suit, not something that has any properties of a almighty being. The lack of information could lead readers looking at your game at a glance to draw religious overtones from the name of the suit.

Just my thoughts.

I think that have might been exactly the case: I linked this game to a thread, a user gave the description a cursory look, and presumed religious overtones.
With that name and including Gears, I'd be expecting religious symbolism and stuff from this game, kinda like Xenogears/Xenosaga lol

I think Dragnfly's ideas were cool too

D'awwwwww thanks. I really love mecha. Especially Real Robot style.
(disclaimer: real robot does not mean real robot.)

I'm still not 100% sure why your last post had a white background, Dragnfly, but, it wasn't intentional! I've since fiddled with the CSS to make it a black background.

A thousand apologies! I'm still relatively new at CSS.

I dunno. .CSS is so intimidating and strange to me that when it comes time for me to make a gamepage I'm just going to hire somebody. When I learned web design it was all basic HTML. Image maps, tables and frames yo. Flash was brand new. So .CSS blows my mind.

I can get around the problem by just changing my text to match whatever hair colour the last character to kill me in a game had.
