This was a project for the birthday bash event, at RMW. I chose to bring back from the dead one of my earliest concepts; in "The messenger and the cursed one" you'll take the role of Riev, a misterious wanderer who has to deliver a life or death message. He is joined by a cursed woman, and hounded at every step by brigands and law enforcement alike for there is a price on his head. The story is mostly a tale of friendship I don't intend to make some grand epic, but to make you care about these people. Hopefully, I've succeded at least partially.

The original concept included a branching storyline, but that's been nixed since then, so the game will be a simple linear dungeon-town-dungeon deal.

Demo updated. Yay?

I've updated the game's demo (I know you all were just so eager to try it) with a lengthier one that covers around half of the game (about 2 hours). New party members, new places to explore, more touching backstory to unlock, a lot to loot... What else could you ask for? I've also corrected and rebalanced several aspects of the game. I'm pretty sure things'll keep changing, but I'd like to believe the game is growing for the better.

The city of Risalia has MANY shops.
By the way, once you talk to Aldes after meeting the thieves guild PR guy the demo is officially over. But there is quite a bit of city for you to explore if you haven't done so already.

If anyone is reading this, please do give the game a try and thank you for reading.

I, so far, have hella enjoyed this game. I've only just met Soanna but, man, is the music and graphics stupendous and well spoken. I could tell you've worked fairly hard on this game! Usually, every time you step into a fight, the players like AWH SHUCKS but every time a battle occurs, I can't help but feel pumped and rock out and ready to obliterate what stands in my way.

There have been a lot and I mean A LOT of errors on behalf of grammar and such but, hey, happens to the best of us. I wrote down a few of them for you, actually, for the benefit of improvement since that is what you'd like.

When exiting the tunnels, there's a bit of dialogue and around that time Riev attempts to say "can't", to no avail, only to say, "can't" That may be accent, though. I couldn't say, and I dare not assume. When I leveled up to Level 3, it repeated it. "Riev is now a level Level 3, etc, etc..." Oh! And when Soanna starts speaking, she says, "My 'same'(Supposed to be name) is Soanna."

Also, one last thing regarding improvement. After the end of a battle, when you achieve items it says, "Got minor potion," right? Well, when you get multiple items, it clashes something awful. Perhaps use commas to separate or use double space?

Thus far, I am rather enjoying this game and I intend play more. xP

First, let me say that the neither graphics nor music are mine. The former is a graphics pack sold on the rpg maker store, while the music I found while surfing newgrounds.com as free to use in non commercial.
I'm glad you liked the music choices, they were originally actually meant for another, grittier game, but I found out that they work here just the same.
A lot of gramar errors, really? :( I'm not a native english speaker, so maybe some of it is due to my ignorance of the language?
I'm not sure I follow what the mistake with the "can't" is EDIT: After checking the game I realized I missed a "t". Big oversight that same instead of name, though :P.
About the victory screen, that's the way the engine works, and I'm no coder to alterate it. What I could do is use an alternate victory screen coded by someone else, but it's been used to death, that's why I used the default one in the first place. Though you're not the first one to point out the lack of clarity in it.

Edit 2: Now I noticed what you said about the level level thing and corrected it. Thanks a lot. Totally missed that.
Edit 3: Uploaded a new version thanks to your feedback (the victory screen is still the old one with the messy item list, though). Plus a few issues that managed to slip by me before. One major thing was that an early game cutscene was supposed to explain Gia's curse but it didn't triggered (big oops!), you didn't miss much though. Basically, it told you that she was weak against all elements and resistant to healing magic, the other fixes were minor.
Edit 4 (Why not?): Figured out how to separate items drops on victory screen. Too lazy to update the download just for that. It'll be in the next version, though.

boxes that have nothing in it should at least say empty so the player knows that its not a error

i don't get collecting flowers some of the same looking ones you cant pick up!

well...this is really inconvenient. there is no way to be reminded of what you need for quests.
the item lady wants some stuff but i forgot how much! and she does not say!

i could not obtain all the hera flowers only 4/5 as i could not pick up any more

battles...ridiculous fetch quests which don't even give you the item you did it for.

Ouch, my frail ego! Anyway, even if you don't endorse it, I thank you for giving it a try.

- The not having a heart thing was a reference to the reconstruction (if I recall correctly), an rmxp game that told you that you could skip cutscenes if you didn't have a heart. The game is sprinkled with random nonsense like that that probably only I will get.
- I think giving an empty message on each checkable object that has nothing will tire the player out. (I mean, they would have to wait for the window to open and then close it on each)
- What's wrong with Riev? Sure he's kinda "meh", but that's about it. I agree with you about Soanna, I almost regret making her a temporary character.
-I assure you I didn't use the blue flower sprite anywhere else, you might be confusing it with another one, and I can't blame you, I'm thinking about putting sparkles in them for the next version so players won't miss them (BTW, the five are there, I assure you.)
-Maybe I'll also add a questlog for next version since you're not the first one who tells me they can't remember all of the subquests. But for now she'll be telling what she needs if you speak to her again (Should've thought of that on my own)

I was so excited to have a working demo that I released it a little raw, sorry (and judging from what I've seen of the message you sent me, with some major bugs still in).
Sorry about the fetch questyness, though the only one not to reward you is the one about the guards, and you sort of get a reward still with the guard-wannabe who gives you a ring.
Anyway, thanks for the through feedback and I'll try to improve the game based on your opinions, even if you probably won't be there to play it :P

You know, I think it's hilarious you comment on grammar mistakes with all the laughable mistakes you, yourself, make. Anyway, I'm going to give this game a try. Be back soon with my opinion!
Well she did send a pretty helpful bug report (better than my beta tester's, at least :P) and I really don't care about her grammar. But that's just me.
In any case, I'm really looking forward to hearing your opinion on the game. :)
I can't find the last of the roots. I have 8 out of 9. I've looked in all the holes twice and I can't find the last hole. I already found the other ingredients. can I have a hint for its location please??? :)

Hey thanks i got it! but its not the ones u have shown
It was the one when u enter the forest on the right. where u have to climb some stairs and there is a chest exactly to its opposite


and also I got another issue. idk if its only happening for me but i got this error as soon as i finish the quests and finished speaking to the mayor. it happens after the mayor asks to speak to soanna alone and riev says to meet at the inn..

Oh, a thousand sorries! I remade that map, but I forgot to change the event that leads you to it. I'm very sorry but you'll have to redownload the demo in order to progress. There's a fixed file already uploaded.
So very sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for trying out the game. :)
EDIT: Sorry again but if you've already downloaded you'll probably have to download again since I accidentally put a little decoration on the path where the next cutscene would ocurr so it will probably be cut off. I've uploaded a new fixed version. For real now. SORRY!!!

Edit: I found another bug. I can't move anywhere after I get out of the inn when the town is under attack. The arrow keys don't work & even the menu doesn't show up when i press ESC.


Well at least the sorrys were warranted. I mean, one makes a minor change and it bites you in the ass...thrice. I don't know if you'll want to redownload the game yet again after all of this (SORRY!!!!!!!!!!), but I've uploaded yet another fixed version, and I made a complete playthrough before uploading it (I even found a few extra bugs). So hopefully now everything will work ok.
BTW, did you make the hermit's quest? Because you oughta have ran into a bug if you did. If you have a save prior to the events at the inn try to do it now (talk to the hermit in the cabin in the woods, then the inn lady)
And because I can't say it enough: sorry! :(

Thanks I don't mind downloading the game again and I dint find any bugs during the hermit quest. I thought the quest was over after the old lady says she doesn't want to give the ring back and the hermit teaches the group some skills..
Yeah, that's the end of the quest, I guess that bug I ran into was introduced after I uploaded the demo to the site the last time. :P
Anyway, thanks for the patience and I hope you enjoy what's left of the demo. And I'd love to hear your thoughts once you're done with it. :)
