Sacred Reviews: Triple Step

"Triple Step" is a short 'puzzle/strategy' game created by ZeroDigitZ using RPG Maker MV. The game is meant to be a fusion of "Minesweeper" and some of the luck based chest games found through the Legend of Zelda franchise. The problem here is that beating "Minesweeper" generally doesn't require a lot of luck, since you can use the numbers provided in the game to workout the likely locations of mines.

In the above image in the top center we see a sequence of 1,2,1. This tells us that the squares I marked in red have to be bomb locations since there the only squares those particular ones could be linked to. You can also use the information provided near the bottom center of this field to find some bombs as well. The problem here is that "Triple Step" doesn't give the player any indication where bombs are located. As such your bound to step on them if you try to reach the chest via crossing the field. To make matters worse the bombs are spawned in new locations every time you die. So you can't even work out a safe path to the chest via either memory or pencil and paper. As such, the only viable way to beat this game is to approach every puzzle using the following strategy shown in the gif below.

This strategy even works on the extreme level. Albeit on hard and extreme your way more likely to step on a mine when you take your proverbial leap of faith onto the mine field, but that's just the way it is.

And it's this utter lack of strategic depth that makes this game really disappointing to me. This isn't a game where your going to use a combination of skill and a little luck to get to the chest. It's a game where your ability to win is entirely dependent on luck and a willingness to repeatedly fail until you get lucky enough to succeed. As such, I really recommend that people give this one a pass since it simply isn't worth playing in my opinion.
