Sacred Reviews: Temple of Memories

Introduction

"Temple of Memories" was created by OzzyTheOne using RPG Maker VX Ace. As for why this game was made, it appears it was for a contest that was held by internet personality PewDiePie.

Story

"Temple of Memories" clearly placed a heavy focus on it's characters a plot. A decision that helps elevate this title over some other games I've played over the years. On the downside though, this game features a rather bitter sweat story about four young adventures that have to give up their lives in order to defeat a great evil. As such, I really don't care for the overarching plot. After all, I'm a sucker for a happy ending.

On a more positive note, the game does devote time to a few slow moments in order to help flesh out the cast. After all, if you want people to care about Merek, Ybenor, Clara, and Martin dying then you need to make the audience form a connection with the characters in advance of their death.

But to throw a curve and end on a more negative note, the game does include a rather noticeable number of spelling errors. At least, that's what I'm assuming is the reason for the inclusion of words like "sould" and so on.

Gameplay

In terms of combat the game makes use of the standard combat system that comes with RPG Maker VX Ace. As such, I really don't have a lot to say about this aspect either. After all, a crap ton of games resort to using this system in order to save on time. And this game was probably made under a bit of time crunch considering it was created for a contest.

On a more positive note, the game does include a few simple puzzles. Albeit, it probably would have behooved the developer to offer a few more details on how the teleporter puzzle works. After all, I largely managed to get through that puzzle by utilizing the brute force method. And while that strategy will undoubtedly work if you keep at it for a while. It's definitely not an elegant or efficient method for solving the puzzle.

Graphics & Music

On the graphical and musical side of things the game largely relies on the RTP. As such, it's hard to really find anything to talk about in this area. In fact, the game only includes a few custom resources that revolve around custom face-sets. Which largely just means covering a character in blood in order to simulate combat injuries.

I suppose, I should end on a minor positive note by pointing out the fact that the game doesn't misuse the RTP resources like a lot of other first time games I can mention do. As such, I can at least say that the game is competently put together in terms of its look and sound even if the lack of custom assets makes the game feel look and feel rather generic.

Conclusion

"Temple of Memories" is a game that leaves a rather bitter taste in my mouth, but I'll admit that my love for happy endings really shouldn't color everyone's perspective on this title. Even so, I only see this game as average. While, it does have a relatively solid story at points. It also contains potential plot holes considering you kill one of the bosses, Flashgraec Nun, with a soul destroying sword, but she still manages to come back at the end of the game despite you smashing her soul to pieces with this game's equivalent of the ragna blade.

Thanks for the review! I never considered some of the story aspects you mentioned and that truly gives an interesting insight that I hadn't considered before.

I hope to be able to use this feedback to make any future projects better.
