Really Makes You Think

A Promise of Love follows a man's rather baffling decision to return to his hometown without his wife, where he finds rather baffling circumstances. The emphasis of this game is on its story, but there's not too much of it that's revealed while you play. The developer seems to want people to interpret it themselves, so I won't go into too much detail about it. This game is a short one -- I played for about 10 minutes, then played multiple times to try and figure out more of the story.

If you're a fan of yandere characters, there might be something here for you. But then again, maybe that's not what happened! The ending scene is a callback to the first one, but with slightly different circumstances, too. I just wasn’t sure what to make of it. Are you alive? Dead? Trapped in the past? Who knows! The only thing that’s certain is that a promise of love was made.

The game's description highlights how you can examine almost any object and these observations can change based on circumstances, which is true... But most of them aren't particularly noteworthy observations, and they seemed to change in ways that didn't matter much. As one example, at one point all observations changed to the man saying he didn't want to stay somewhere after an eerie thing happened. Some of the observations are amusing, and by examining things you really get a sense for how much this guy fawns over his wife, but I feel it could have delivered a bit more story than what we got.

When it starts raining, make sure you enter this large tree's shadow from the left or middle. Entering from the right will make you unable to progress, but no worries if you get stuck. A quick reset and less than five minutes, and chances are you'll be back.

This is one of those games that's so brief I'll recommend it just so you can see for yourself. If you're even a little bit interested, give it a go. You might be able to piece together more of the story than I could!

A lot of the story is inferred, so you aren't alone here. Another user had expressed similar questions as to what exactly was happening in the game. The simplest explanation would be you got hit on the back of your head by your wife and ended up suffering memory loss.

The main story, told bluntly, would be something like this:
The man always protected this one girl from bullies, which led to the girl falling in love with him. However, it was one-sided and the man eventually fell in love with someone else. The girl he protected went on a rampage with a knife, killed everyone, and either forced the man to marry her or he married her out of fear (not much difference there). Presumably, the man couldn't reconcile the image of the docile girl he once protected with the bloodstained bride and so he forgot all about the incident and convinced himself that he really, really loved her.

...or something like that xD Your story could be as good as mine. What did you make of it?

Yeah, that particular "stuff changing" mechanic isn't used very much... I think it was used there in that classroom and 1 more time depending on the order in which you access stuff-- I'm not completely sure.

Either way, I'm glad you liked the game, and thanks for taking the time to write a review!
