What is Fear & Hunger

Fear & Hunger is a horror dungeon crawler set in the dark and hopeless dungeons of fear and hunger. Four misfortuned adventurers dwell deeper and deeper to the darkness and uncover the secrets this ancient fortress holds inside. The fortress works as an ancient nexus for different planes of existence. The depths are in an eternal turmoil as both old and new gods struggle for power, it’s up to the players to choose their position and stance in all of this.

The game is a hybrid of survival horror and dungeon crawler genres with its influences ranging from Silent Hill to Nethack. There are roguelike elements to the game as well as a heavy foundation of a j-RPG. Fear & Hunger is heavy on atmosphere and ruthless in its difficulty.

Features:

  • Oppressive and relentless atmosphere

  • 4 different character classes and many additional characters to recruit

  • 9 different endings

  • Different game modes, including a super secret one unlocked upon beating the game

  • Unforgiving and unique gameplay

  • Randomized elements to keep the game fresh with subsequent playthroughs

  • Turn-based Strategic Dismember Combat System

  • Numerous unique gameplay systems

  • Graphical art style mixing pixel art with digital painting

  • Original ambient soundtrack creating the dreary mood

The world of Fear & Hunger is VERY dark. THE GAME IS MEANT ONLY FOR MATURE AUDIENCES! Extreme violence and gore are everyday sights in the dungeons and death is one of the easier ways to go in the game. The game has drug and substance abuse, heavy themes ranging from self-mutilation to sexual violence. None of the themes are taken lightly however. They are all part of the world building and there to create the unique atmosphere where the game measures just how far the player is willing to go in order to survive.

Parts of the dungeon layout, events, loot and enemy placements are randomized with few different variations to keep things fresh with subsequent playthroughs. The game is designed with the classic trial and error formula, so you can expect to start the game over and over again. But as long as you learn from your mistakes, you can quickly find yourself at the deeper levels of the dungeon.

The combat in Fear & Hunger is turn-based akin to classic role-playing games, but with a twist of its own. You can target individual limbs of your enemies to dismember them strategically and thus maximize your chances for survival. However, just the same, enemies can also cut off the arms and the legs of your playable characters if you are not careful. You need to prepare well for every encounter if you wish to stay alive. But don’t forget that running away from threats is often the best solution as well. There are many ways for survival in Fear & Hunger - You can find better equipment, learn different blood and love magic, fuse characters into each other, pray different gods, talk your way out of battles, meet new party members, snipe enemies from distance, use traps to disable them… and so on. The Idea is to use what you got at your disposal and be creative with it.

Featured Game Give Away!

Oh wow! Fear & Hunger got on the front-page? Wasn't expecting this.

RMN, you have my deepest gratitude! RPG Maker community has a dear place in my heart, despite not being that active member around these parts of internet. I actually started my game making on Don Miguel's forums ages ago and it had a very big impact in me eventually returning to this stuff. And that's also the reason I've stuck with RPG Maker, despite what 99% of internet tells me. So getting featured here really means a lot to me.

To celebrate the front-page spot, here are few free Steam keys for the game. First ones to get them, gets them, sorry :/ Please don't hog more than one!

Would love to hear what everyone thinks of the game. It's a bit divisive and I don't mind even heavier criticism.

More feedback.

-For convenience, jumped-into toilets should have a give-up option triggering an insta.

-Bug: finding alchemillia vol 3 does not give you vol 3. It's vol 1.

-Found "studies of All-mer 1" twice. Not sure if bug.

-Walp, I found the bunny rabbit orgy. I was not prepared for that. Leftmost pair, second layer up, can be walked through. Top rightmost and top most cannot be talked to. No one here can be interacted with (including the unpartnered rabbit.) Is this intentional?

-BUG: Exiting the courtyard causes another mock bookshelf to appear, walling it off.

-BUG: Defeated human hydra is full of passability issues.

-Fought priests during a decent run, priest started chanting and I got a string of misses and lost the coin flip. Tone up accuracy, please. Hitting 50% of the time is honestly more frustrating than the instas.

Edit: still more feedback.

-Book of Enlightenment vanishes from inventory when used. Intentional?

-"The fellowship ch" should capitalize Fellowship

-Killing the Thin Creature with a head wound causes his body to vanish, but his head to remain while the end-of-combat dialog plays.

-Six consecutive misses on guard's head by girl and I, during which time guard took me down to 30 hp and girl down to dead. From full hp. Tone up accuracy.

-Girl does not leave behind a corpse. Or if she does, it overlaps with that of guard.

-Sometimes body parts cannot be switched between, confirming other playtesters' issues. Using the mouse to try to click on the desired part results in selecting the torso.

-Talking to crazed prisoner "causes him to hesitate", but dialog has no real effect.

-Small keys do not work on doors in the prison. Intentional?

-Returned to floor 1 from the prison to find Buckhorn and Trofurr's corpse had both moved out into the hallway above and below the arrow trap. No change in dialog, though.
@Dragnfly, guess you're right. but still I'd imagine getting some heat if the scene actually unfolded in a way that people might have expected.

@kumada,
Wow thanks a ton for this feedback!!

yep, you're probably right

-Bug: finding alchemillia vol 3 does not give you vol 3. It's vol 1.
This is part of the bug mentioned earlier where rpg maker does things on it's own.

author=kumada
-Found "studies of All-mer 1" twice. Not sure if bug.
It's not a bug per se, but unnecessary never the less.

author=kumada
-Walp, I found the bunny rabbit orgy. I was not prepared for that. Leftmost pair, second layer up, can be walked through. Top rightmost and top most cannot be talked to. No one here can be interacted with (including the unpartnered rabbit.) Is this intentional?
It's not fully functioning feature yet. but it has lore meaning to it, so that's why it's already there.

author=kumada
-BUG: Exiting the courtyard causes another mock bookshelf to appear, walling it off.
I thought I fixed this bug, guess not. There's a problem with the game sometimes forgetting the placements of the events when exiting the room. Even though there is a script for it that *should* be fully functional.

author=kumada
-BUG: Defeated human hydra is full of passability issues.
oh right it is! D:

-Fought priests during a decent run, priest started chanting and I got a string of misses and lost the coin flip. Tone up accuracy, please. Hitting 50% of the time is honestly more frustrating than the instas.
ah man... I feel bad for you. I'll see what I can do...

author=kumada
-Book of Enlightenment vanishes from inventory when used. Intentional?
It's intentional It's the same as ancient book and book of the forgotten memories vanishing as they got other functions than just for reading purposes. Maybe a message telling about the book vanishing would be good.

author=kumada
-"The fellowship ch" should capitalize Fellowship
ya!

author=kumada
-Killing the Thin Creature with a head wound causes his body to vanish, but his head to remain while the end-of-combat dialog plays.
thanks for the info!

author=kumada
-Six consecutive misses on guard's head by girl and I, during which time guard took me down to 30 hp and girl down to dead. From full hp. Tone up accuracy.
hmm. The head is difficult to hit on purpose. But I'll reconsider the percentages.

author=kumada
-Girl does not leave behind a corpse. Or if she does, it overlaps with that of guard.
Good point!

author=kumada
-Sometimes body parts cannot be switched between, confirming other playtesters' issues. Using the mouse to try to click on the desired part results in selecting the torso.
I'll look into it. It's a weird bug, because the battle system is actually pretty close to default front-view battle system. All the body parts are just individual enemies.

author=kumada
-Talking to crazed prisoner "causes him to hesitate", but dialog has no real effect.
You can make him stop fighting by threatening to kill him. Still I'll make talking more useful later on!

author=kumada
-Small keys do not work on doors in the prison. Intentional?
Yep, there's another set of keys for that.

author=kumada
-Returned to floor 1 from the prison to find Buckhorn and Trofurr's corpse had both moved out into the hallway above and below the arrow trap. No change in dialog, though.
It's the same bug as with the bookshelf.

Again, thanks for the testing and feedback! It's been really useful. It really shows that I rushed this game out D: Gotta do proper testing rounds with the game next time!
Re: accuracy. How about each body part removed adds an accuracy bonus to hitting the head? Like, when the enemy's lurching around because both their legs, their stinger, their grabbo-arm, and their cleaver have come off, you're at +50% to hit the head.

Aaaand now more feedback.

-Threatening the crazed prisoner does not make him stop fighting. He doesn't take any actions in combat anyway, and threatening him doesn't end the battle.

-Running away, is not an apparent action you can take. You have to cancel out of the combat menu to find it, which is bizarre. I never would've even guessed it was there. Maybe include a play manual with the game?

-Sconces seem to extinguish when you change floors. Bug?

-Pocketcat is fascinating.

-Mineshaft past Pocketcat cannot be entered. Bug, or have I hit the end of the demo? I've killed Cavemother.

-Thin Creature does not appear to turn into a butterfly if you wait long enough. I'm guessing it was just delusion?

-I've searched all accessible searchables and never found a small key, so I cannot unlock Girl and give her to Pocketcat.

-Guard in the second area's library cannot exit the room to chase you. He just stands there. However, I hit the menu to pause the game, I brought up this window to make the bug report, and then I heard the guard bellow. I came back to find I was in combat with it. No idea how this happened.

-Oh, hey. Guards don't end your run if they kill you with damage from the cleaver (but not the tackle, I think?). I took a lethal hack at 1 hp, was dragged off and sodomized (does this still happen if you remove the stinger?), and was able to crawl around the prisons at 30 hp. Gnomes got me immediately, but I feel like this is the thing that should happen when you're hit with the guard's insta.
Just so everyone knows there IS a discord now, With Rooms for bug reports and suggestions, Just check the top of the page, Should have been updated to show it, Me and orange are already there, able to discuss things and such! It would be great to get some more people in there.

This makes sense. The guard would be getting more helpless with every limb lost.

author=kumada

Oh right, sorry I thought you meant the other one. The one with both legs still intact.

Yeah I gotta make it more apparent. It's no wonder no one finds the option.

Yep a bug! :)

author=kumada

Great to hear. I like him.

author=kumada

You hit the end of the demo. Awesome job on finishing the cavemother. I haven't heard many people getting that far.

author=kumada

One can always hope.

author=kumada
-I've searched all accessible searchables and never found a small key, so I cannot unlock Girl and give her to Pocketcat.

There should always be a key in the second dungeon area. When you search the desk, you should find Captain's diary and a small key.

author=kumada

I'll check it out. Might be the stealth/chase script working weirdly or something if it still managed to get out of the room.

Oh you were finally able to experience that! It's a random even if you lose to some of the guards. But yes, I was planning on adding more events like that to give players more chances to stay alive.

Hey Orange, Im trying to upload my game to this site, but I honestly cant figure it out. The download button only seems to allow the people to see my title screen and the "URL" section doesnt seem to help. Im setting up a MEGA right now to see if a URL to that will fix the issue, but Ive tried Google Drive and Dropbox already and I cant seem to get it to work. if you can, send me a message or email me at cainreval@gmail.com
teaser demo v.3 !! with minor bug fixes, improved graphics in "love corner", love corner is functional now too, other small tweaks too :)

Alright, I tried fixing most of the stuff addressed here. Thanks to all who were testing out the game! I couldn't get lanterns bug out on me, so that might still be there... Also sometimes dead characters and events don't stay at their places when changing room. I have yet to find a concrete solution for this, I did try to fix it and it works for the most part, but it does weird things every now and then. Also couldn't find the solution for torso-only aiming yet.

But anyways, I'm probably through with this teaser demo now. I'll start adding bigger features to the game, but if you still find new bugs, please do let me know!

Oh and intro is skippable now too!
More feedback:

-Intro skip now skips everything at once with one button press. Not sure if intended.

-Wandering around with your legs off is boring, which is basically the worst thing for player engagement. Losing your legs works fine when you get sodomized in the jail cell, because you get killed by gnomes shortly thereafter. But waking up in the flesh hole is (while thematically cool) tremendously annoying once you wiggle your way free. There's nothing to threaten you outside. You have to either slow-crawl your way down a floor to find a gnome to kill you, or just hit 'return to title', at which point it would have been better to code a game over. I'm not sure how to recommend fixing this, since limb loss is a big part of the gameplay/attrition-horror, but that crawl is so ponderous and there's no recovering from it. Maybe having a lizardman spawn when you crawl out could help.

-A Hunger meter off of the menu screen would be really welcome. Being able to track Mind/Fear is great, and it's pretty frustrating not knowing how hungry I am except for when the game arbitrarily tells me. I end up bolting down a dozen eggs and being like "well...did that work? How nourishing is a cabbage, anyway?"

-Found a copy of the Ancient Book after using a copy of the Ancient Book. Is there any benefit to using multiple?

-Is the bunny orgy a full heal? I went in with full health, so I'm not strictly sure. Also, is the bit about the 'first one being free' a reference to you not having to flip a coin the first time you go?

-I am still not sure where to find the non-crawling ghoul. Have other people found him? Is he in the demo? I think I can see a standing body in the room to the left of the guards' sodomy chamber, but that room is locked and does not accept small keys.

-Gnomes do not leave corpses. Intended?

-Both bloodstains in the guards' room in the dungeons are for some reason impassable objects.

-Guards still use tackle when missing legs. This feels unlikely.

-Steal skill cannot be used on corpses. Corpses seem like the optimal target for theft.

Yeah it's intended, the problem is that the logo intro is a movie, so I couldn't find a simple way to stop it from playing if the player wants to skip it - so I made the button skip the whole thing.

True! This is a problem. I was thinking of maybe making crawling faster...

I'm gonna work out some kind of status menu, because it would be nice to see other status ailments too.

author=kumada

Yep. There are 2 magics you can learn in the demo.

author=kumada

It's a full heal (but doesn't restore limbs or other status ailments), it kinda makes things easy potentially, but after the first one it's going to be risky.

It's a random enemy in the first area. I seem to run into it almost every turn - but that's random odds for ya I guess. It's sometimes right next to the door leading to the first outside area.

author=kumada
-Gnomes do not leave corpses. Intended?
It's intended. But I'm gonna fix that. Also I don't really like their movements at the moment. So I gotta tweak them for sure.

Oh yeah! I forgot that one!

You mean dead corpses? You can always search dead corpses...?

Thanks for the feedback again kumada! ^.^
The walking ghoul's a random enemy in the first area? I've never encountered it once, and I do thorough sweeps of each area before proceeding with a run. That's really weird.

With the steal skill, I've never been able to successfully use it without getting killed in combat, but I was figuring it would generate different items than Search. I was wondering if this is how those other rooms in the prison are supposed to be accessed.

There's 50/50 chance for the ghoul to be there. It is pretty surprising you haven't ran into it yet. If it was there, you couldn't miss it.

There are some different items when stealing and searching - true. You can get the prison keys by stealing from one of those guards in that area. Although prison cells have nothing useful yet...

Do you mean the guy where it says "you see something moving" or whatever when you approach? If so, he's always been there when I play so I didn't even know he could randomly not show up.

RNG is a big jerk.

Yup that one! He's there on most of my playthroughs too - I never feel like fighting him. But it's 50/50 chance, so yea it can happen...

Is this a one man project?

Yea so far it is. I've made the game, graphics and music too(except the tune that plays with the logo)

A friend of mine actually just started helping out with the graphics a couple of days ago, so maybe the team will grow bigger. I'm not very good at making music, so I might consider getting someone to compose - although it's been fun making music, so dunno..
I just want to save the loli, but I can't find the key. D;

For saving the girl, getting lucky enough to find wherever the key ended up is the least of the troubles. Keeping her alive is the tough part.
