Pokémon Hunter

Haha, a Stinkoman cameo.

I'm getting a kick out of Submission's battle animation. Eli chucks Pikachus, but where does he get them all?

Status Effects

I always love lots of status effects. MMORPG's like World of Warcraft incorporate a load of both beneficial and detrimental status effects and they always add tons of depth and strategy to combat.

Unfortunately, certain engines that we use here like RPG Maker 2000 only let you have one at a time on a character unless you have a CBS so you can't really explore the possibilities. :l

I choose you, pie
cause the cake is a lie
eat you up, will I
then I'll just curl up and die

JRPG or 3D rpg?

post=155470
There are no game genres these days.

This.

It's not just games becoming more ambiguous but people that want variety and the result is genre hybrids. With each gaming generation it gets more convoluted. Super Mario Bros. was simply a platformer. Final Fantasy was defined as an RPG. But you can't stick to genres forever; it starts to repeat itself because you can only make so many platformers before every other platformer feels like a clone. Same rule for any genre. The result? Developers desperately pursuing alternatives and start introducing hybrids, and a popular example is Kingdom Hearts with its Action RPG type gameplay.

Also any video game in existence can be classified as an RPG, considering the abbreviation translates to "Role-Playing Game" in which one assumes a role of a preset character in a virtual universe. We like to cling to genres for the sake of simplicity when there are so many video games released now. If you like platformers, you can search for other games classified as platformers to have a similar experience instead of hunting down random titles with your fingers crossed and relying on hearsay, hoping to find another platformer.

To answer the OP, the question "JRPG or 3D RPG?" makes absolutely no sense. But choosing between 2D and 3D graphics, I'm neutral about it. I've seen great things happen with each and there's lots to complain about as well. The type of graphic medium the game is presented in doesn't matter. The quality of it matters in attracting an audience but isn't the deciding factor whether a game is good or not. It's all in the execution, a well-told story with a strong hook, and/or addicting gameplay.

Community project, anyone?

I don't actually have a problem with letting the people designated as writers come up with that. I would probably drop out though they decided on a DBZ game or something.

The project wouldn't be anything about DBZ, Narutards or anything like that. Not while I'm around at least. ಠ_ಠ

At least it's better than this.

Pokémon Hunter 4: The Hidden Truth

Finally finished the whole demo. I'm impressed at its length and that I could still play more to find additional secrets and it wasn't an abrupt "end of demo, Game Over" screen, thanks to the day/night cycles.

The rest of the demo aside from the boulder puzzles in the Cave portion of the game (see earlier comment about that) were great and you had a healthy portion of side quests to complete. Unfortunately, one of these quests was almost a necessity in order to pull through the game in one piece: the beast training. If you overlook it, your stats will fall dangerously short of what's considered reasonable for boss battles like Magneton.

Once I figured out how your game balance, it became much simpler and the Mass EXP system kept me from having to worry about dead party members. A great implementation considering they like to die a lot.

Hopefully you can finish this project somewhere down the line. Perhaps I'll go play the other Pokemon Hunter games now.

Community project, anyone?

Despite all the lashing this thread is getting, even if it doesn't get finished, I'm in it to mingle with other authors at least. :U

Brian noooooo!

Community project, anyone?

I'd pitch in but I don't know how it would work out with my crappy non-existent internet connection that only works Monday-Thursday (and only sometimes at best).

If it counts, I would like to map, event, write, or any combination of the above.

About what Darken said, graphics is always the most intense in terms of effort and time investment with very little reward. Expecting those will certainly cause your project to fail unless you have truly dedicated, ambitious individuals on your team. You can always just go with the RTP if all else fails. That would leave mapping, scripting, and writing for the most part.
