Limited Locations
I'm inclined to agree with you. In fact, limiting your setting opens up a whole variety of potential stories that expansive exploration doesn't really allow for.
One could argue that without a variety of fun and exploring places to go off and explore, the player/creator is forced to focus more on the finer details. RPGs are inherently character focused, as pianotm said it's all about playing a role - and so, without the entire world to explore, you are instead forced to spend more time exploring the characters.
Of course, that isn't to say a limited setting can't be just as interesting, I just mean that I feel it offers a greater chance to really explore the inner workings of a character's mind - which is the kind of game that I enjoy most.

Oh, well good to know I'm not stepping on any toes :P haha
Do you think you'd be able to link me to some of those threads? I'd love to check them out.

Fan Games: Welcome or Frowned Upon?
I apologise if I'm posting too much, I'm just really interested in everybody's opinions on things!
So, as a community are fan games more often welcome or are they typically kind of taboo? I'd assume the latter, since I find fan games often to lack much imagination or effort - however, there are hidden gems out there and I'd hate to think that they're ignored simply because they're a fan game.

Limited Locations
Do you believe an RPG can be set in limited locations? By this I mean, as opposed to adventuring across entire continents, you instead explore a single city and its surroundings.
If so, do you believe that this limited setting would more likely boost or hinder the gameplay?

Gender Options
I realise that I'm very new here, and the last thing I want is to 'rock the boat' and spark some kind of great controversy. It's just, I noticed that with the gender options we have "male", "female" and "welp". The inclusion of welp confuses me, and honestly slightly offends me. My understanding is that welp implies a hesitance to reveal their gender? If I have that wrong, please forgive me.
However, if somebody was hesitant to reveal their gender, there should be an option for them simply to not share that information. As a transgender woman, I'm a little offended that "welp" has been offered as an option while options such as "transgender" "transexual" "intersex" "m2f" "f2m" heck, even just "other" have been ignored.
I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post my concerns, but I just wanted to put this out there. I'm moreso looking out for those who are more sensitive about this topic than myself. For a lot of people, this is a huge issue, and the option of "welp" can be viewed as highly insensitive.
So, yeah, enjoy that can of worms I just opened, haha.

Heya!
Heya!
Hey!
My name is BansheeSerenade, or Ashley, whichever you prefer.
Obviously, I'm new here around these parts, but I can't wait to get to know you all!
I'm 19 and Australian, I'm going to start studying writing at university next year, hopefully to either get a job writing for comics or games. Hence why I figured I'd dabble around with rpg maker so I could get a taste for the industry.
I'm currently designing a FFX demake, tweaking the story in parts. I know, I know, I'm biting off WAY more than I can chew. I've read all of the tutorials, I know it's best to start off small.
What can I say? I like a challenge.
Of course, I realise there's no way in hell this will ever be completed - I'm essentially just using it as a way to jump into the deep end and learn the ropes without needing to worry about developing a story beforehand.
Anyways, it's great to meet you all! I can't wait to become an active member of your forums ^_^
