This could all be avoided if we made a new world map. :P
But Hali makes a good point against making big changes. At the very minimum the tweaks we make should be moving things around or deleting things, and not adding things in or making changes that affect the level as a whole (no matter how insignificant). I am still against Great Palace X being a main level, but I can't think of a work-around at the moment.
Personally I'm willing to sacrifice thematic consistency if it means the game flows better as result.

That's what I had in mind. Maybe make that part into a ghost ship?
And to clarify: I meant to say Blood Ocean could be moved to Spinning Hazard's current location (before Fortress Aflame). And then have Skull Lake be the first or second level.

I still don't know. I went back and checked the levels and I think Great Palace X is our only Link level. So I'm very wary of taking it out of bonus territory. I don't expect players to have had any practice with Link, and throwing them into an already difficult Link level as part of the main game seems to be a bad move.

Funny thing about that. Since the player has to dig up the star, I can't control where they release it to pick it up. It's unfortunate they can die after getting it, but in this one case, I say it's their own stupid fault if it happens.
Put two sizeables to the left and right of the bottommost sizeable.

Ummmmmmm, there's kind of a huge difference in difficulty there. Not only is Skull Lake too easy for a world 6 stage, but it'd bump Great Palace X forward a world or two, which just doesn't work. We don't have as much wiggle room with our roster like it is. Great Palace X is the only one I could feasibly swap it with. So...pick your poison.
....Or we can swap it with Skull Lake. It doesn't have to go in Spinning Hazard's slot. Blood Ocean can take that. Skull Lake would work pretty good as the first or second level of World 6.

Some hard levels I've made could use that same excuse, but you'd never put them in any world except the last. Just because it can be done easily doesn't mean that is will be, or that a player will think it belongs in World 3. In my experience you have to account for players making stupid mistakes instead of being careful. Batty Bungalow requires a similar level of careful platforming due to the low ceilings, but the feeling it elicits isn't the same. And the feeling a level has is sometimes just as important as the difficulty itself. World of Hurt is far more oppressive than Batty Bungalow. You even had the final area music!

I second the Koopa Kid on Triad Airship. Because we don't have one in this game. In fact I think I'm the only guy who used one in RMN 3.
The difficulty progression seems pretty legit to me. Spinning Hazard might still be better off as a bonus level. Making Fortress Aflame the final level and Fortress of Doom a super secret one was a fantastic idea. I'm okay with this list.
