??Monster Encounter Areas??

(RPG Maker XP)
Yeah, this is my fourth post in less than two days. But at least I'm learning something. And I hope the answers that I get to my questions help other people too.

So here's my next question. In the previous versions, like RPG Maker 2000, you could set Areas within a Map, so that only in certain parts of your game would you encounter enemies. You could also set encounter rates and all that jazz within these designated zones. Apparently RPG Maker XP doesn't have that function. I don't know if there is a better way to do this, but I've read a few posts and obviously the only way to simulate this option is to set something called Border Events. The idea is to create an Event that has variables that give you a chance to encounter a monster. Then you copy and paste the events as a border around say a forest, or desert, or smaller area. I have NO IDEA how to even begin to do this, mostly because I still don't know how to even begin with variables. I understand what the definition of a variable is, and I have had many people try and tell me that. That doesn't help me in the least. Yes I've had Algebra and Geometry. But what I need to know is how variables are a part of RPG Maker, and how I can best put them to use.

??Required Quest Item/ Making a Title Screen??

(RPG Maker XP)
I'm back. With more possibly simple questions. I've figured out Events, Switches, and basic Triggers. I still don't know how to set up variables for activities such as fishing and pickpocketing.

PART 1-> Okay. I like quests where you have to have a certain Item in your Inventory to complete the quest or simply start it. How do you do this, if you can? I've been making it where you talk to an Event, receive the item, and the Event itself is the one that activates a Switch, changing the requiring Event. But its not because you have the Quest Item. Say you somehow were able to drop the item, and you no longer have it. The quest would still complete once you talked to the requiring Event, even without the item. How do I fix this?

PART 2-> I tried customizing my own Title Screen on Paint, Microsoft Word 2007, and Microsoft PowerPoint 2007. But they just wouldn't save as a picture document that could be imported into RPG Maker XP. I know there is supposed to be some way you can just take a screen shot or something with a combination of buttons. I don't actually know how though, or how to store it for that matter. Any advice?

??Variables??

(RPG Maker XP)
Yeah I'm already back. Okay, so here is the new problem. I want to learn about variables. I know they are the only way to go if you want to make your character capable of fishing, pickpocketing, etc. I just don't know how to set them up. Could somebody give me a run through on something basic, like said pickpocketing or fishing? I'm trying to incorporate as many functions as possible into my game, to give it a real 'do anything, go anywhere' feel.

UPDATE TO REQUEST HERE-> I almost have the variable thing figured out. But not quite. How much is like a hundred percent or whatever on the greater than or equal to or less than thing? I'm really confused. Oh and I don't have any idea what the local switch thing is. Plus I don't know what triggers are or how to use them. Yes. I'm a noob.

Oh and P.S. I still don't know how to set up a title cinematic.

??Event Resetting/ Title Screen??

(RPG Maker XP)
First, which is my biggest problem at the moment, is Event Resetting. I may have rigged my events wrong, but heres what I do. I set the 'starter' event where I want your character to see it. When you talk to it, say you get a quest. To make the NPC say something else and not give the quest all over again, I just have it switch places with an identical Event. These 'switcher' Events are usually on an island somewhere where they can't escape or be seen by the player. So thats how the game progresses, by Events either erasing or trading places with another one. So thats how my game is currently set up. But there is one problem. Say you do an entire set of quests, or you may be in the middle of one, and you decide to go inside a shop or something, which of course teleports you to a different map. Thats all fine and dandy, you buy your crap and then go on your merry way. But once you get back outside, all of the Events have reset and you're back at square one. How do I keep this from happening? I would love to make the game sort of an open world sandbox style. But I can't do this if every time the hero leaves a map and comes back everything is the way it was the very first time you saw it!
??? :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Second, is a Title Screen. I don't really need to change the actual part that says like New Game, Continue, or Exit, I want like a cinematic intro. Something that has a little scene and the title of my game with a cool font and animation. But first things first. I need help with the above problem before this.
