So, to add to the list of things preventing me from secussfully working on my game, my computer of 4 years just broke down this morning. Luckily I had everything backed up so I didn't lose anything, but it still sucks regardless. I have $340 in my account saved up from my job and my mom is willing to contribute $500 to the purchase of a new laptop, so it's not like money is an issue. Only problem is that my mom will be out of town until Sunday going to a funeral in Florida, my dad is completely unwilling to contribute any money to my new PC since he bought me my old one entirely on his own, and my grandma will be out of town visiting family in NC. So I'm basically screwed with no PC until Sunday. The worst part is that I have college which REQUIRES my computer so unless I can get a new PC soon I can't go to school next week or do any homework at all. If that's the case I'll miss a major assignment in History and fail the class. So yeah, that's great. Just wonderful.
The computer's only four years old? That may be old in terms of technology and software, but in terms of a piece of electronic equipment that you own, that's not that old at all. I mean, don't get me wrong! Getting a new computer will make a lot of things all kinds of easier for you, but have you considered having it repaired, instead? Or maybe it's something simple, like a blown power supply. You can be back up and running for under 100 dollars.
Edit: I'm just like, "Throw it away and buy a new one" when something breaks can be a really unnecessarily expensive approach to life. At least make sure it isn't something simple, first. Try to save some money.

I'm with piano. This sounds like an individual component failure, not something that would require a brand new machine. Call around to some local computer repair shops to see if they have time to look at yours, then haul it over. It could save you a bundle and even get you back in business sooner than a new computer would.
For perspective on lifespan, I'm running a machine I built in 2012 and it's showing no signs of slowing down. I had to replace the graphics card once which was a setback, and one noisy casing fan, but that's it. Four years is way too soon to be dumpstering the whole thing.

I'm wondering if this machine could still be under warranty? I feel like a one-year warranty for computers is the bare minimum, but, a five-year one wouldn't be impossible.
From my own experience in regards to life-span, my first laptop lasted from 2009 to 2015. That's about six years, and what made me get rid of it was keyboard issues. I bought one earlier this year, so that 'top that I bought in 2015 lasted about seven years. The only real issue I had with that one is that more and more games I was playing required a "high performance" power setting.

To answer all your questions, I already tried to get the computer repaired when it first started breaking down about 6 months ago. Brought it to multiple places and they all said there was nothing they could do since all the parts that they needed were rare and expensive/unavailable and recommended that I get a new laptop instead since that would actually be cheaper than repairing my current one. And about warranty, it was only a 1 year warranty which expired in 2018, and it was under my dad's name who I don't see that often. (my parents are divorced and I live with my mom) I already bought a new PC which is a super good one with 16 GB of ram and high storage, only problem is that it's a PAIN to get everything recovered since the software that came with my drive is no longer supported so I have to copy and paste everything manually which takes eons to do. Plus even downloading an alternate browser and steam was nearly impossible due to Windows 11 being incredibly restrictive without really going into the settings to disable microsoft's BS "protections." (actually just a means to force you to exclusively use MS' systems so they can make maximum profit) It's been copying my files for over 3 hours and it's still at 0%. (though progress has been made) The worst part is that it isn't even copying my CURRENT files, it's copying ALL my files I ever had in that folder causing thousands of repeat duplicate files and the same files but with different names (counts every rename I ever did as a separate file) It's going to be hell to organize, I can tell you that.
It's good to hear that you're back up and running again, but what you're doing sounds unwieldy as all hell. What method of file copying are you using that makes it so time consuming?
In the past, I've always just transferred onto an external HDD, then transferred from the HDD to the new computer. You can leave it running while you go to sleep and shouldn't take more than a handful of hours.
Also, fuck Windows 11. Microsoft's business model is moving ever closer toward subscription fees for everything. Even Solitaire Collection is subscription-based for ad removal. Screw that. I'm never moving past Win 7. "It's not supported anymore" is just layman nonsense.
Disregard my unrelated rant :V

my machine is from... 2013? Maybe 2014? And it wasn't cutting edge components back then (iirc it is an AMD FX chip and AMB 7777 videocard... it's been a while since I even thought about it.) But I don't play anything fancy or new ever. Had to replace my CPU fan because it got LOUD, but the new one is all pretty and colourful, so that's a win.
Enjoy the new PC!
