I could come up some counter arguments, and then you would do the same, and so on and so on...
Let's just stop this pointless debate, shall we? Debating for debate's sake is a great thing, but things are getting out of hand here...You make some good points and I think I made some too, so let's just heed Solitayre's advice and agree to disagree. If you really wish to argue, we should at least do it through PMs, if at all...

"However, because he has worked to put in some gameplay elements, I don't think they can be simply ignored in a review..."
You are probably right, but if we look upon this as an "interactive show/story/whatever" then this amount of gameplay is all right, (even visual novels have some gameplay in them sometimes...) while if we expect an RPG, then it's waaay not enough. But you have a point there and I will take it into consideration in the future. I also have no right to change a game's genre, but I still think that the label is wrong and this is an interactive story...in which case 4.5 is a fair score.

No, you misunderstand.
First, I did not rate the gameplay high, I did not rate it at all. I decided to treat this game for what it is, an "Interactive show" with a misplaced label.
My justification is not that they rated it low, but that every review so far took the issue of gameplay heavily into account, and that is the main reason for it's scores so far. I decided that while it's certainly is an issue, It's also clear, that gameplay is absolutely not the focus of the game, and that this is not an RPG. It might be labeled as such, and that will cause misunderstandings, but it's not exactly "fair and just" to get two or at least one star less for something like a wrong tag.
Again, I know it's debatable, and I understand if anyone disagrees with my decision, but this seemed fair and just to me, and the fact that others before me decided to be less then lenient in this matter only strenghened my decision to look upon this game from a different point of view.

Okay, it's lame to triple post, but let me jus apologize for the spelling and grammar mistakes...it's a bit late around this part of the globe, so my engrish is even worse then usually.

I think the story is fine, but if you are looking for a fatnastic plot, and nothing else (I can understand that, as I'm usually like that too) then you might not like the game. Still worth a try though.
(Unless you are just being sarcastic because you didn't like it.)

Okay, let's see.
You say imply is no work beneath atmosphere, but that would be a rather strange, as the atmosphere is created by music, graphics, and effects in my oppinion, and that is what I state in my review. I think these three usually play an important role in any review, so by "Atmosphere" I mean graphics and music at the very least. These two do deserve a maximum score, I beleive.
I mention the cast, who are not so unique, save a few, so that's let's say avarage, since most games have a rather non-unique character lineup.
I praise the stroy telling, which is not completely unique, but uses graphical effects and such very efficently, and it's otherwise solid, so that would be at the very least a 4.5 out of 5.
There is the story, which is not completely original, but has a few very good twists, If we say that games which actually aren't only about collecting special artifacts to destroy the demon king, get an avarage score, then surely, this could be a 4
Now gameplay is an issue, that is true, and I do ponder a lot upon genre. You have a point in saying that I should have took that into consideration in the final score, nd I thought a lot about it, but you see, I beleive this game got enough bad reviews because it's not really an RPG. There is a limit for punishment suffered because of a misplaced label. I think this is fair, but it's a debatable point and I understand if some people disagree.
So then (5+5+3+4.5+4)/5=.3~4.5
Even if you say that storytelling usually doesn't get it's own score (althugh in this game, given that it really has a lot of storytelling, I think it's okay) and we merge it with the story itself, and we say that the two together worth a 4, even then, it's 4.25 in which case I as the reviewer probably have the liberty, to decide whether it should be 4 or 4.5.
Oh and...
I do state, that thre is a lot of dialogue, and that the prologue and the first chapter are slow, but I belive I also mention that the game doesn't get boring after these two, and the stunning Atmosphere actually makes up for the first few hours, as I think the players would be "adequately entertained" for this approximately two hour peroid.
I'm sorry you didn't like the GPR "joke", it seems that my sense of humor is not perfect after all... :P
My thoughts about the genre stuff are above, and I still agree that this is not one, and should be labeled as something else, but that is up to Reives (the creator, not the character).
Lastly, I didn't recommend it to "those people" because they wouldn't like it. And I for one don't like playing with games which are not to my taste, so I am quite thankful if someone points out, that I might not like it.
I did not write this review as a revenge and I'm not emotinally-charged. If I were, then I probably would have thought that you are trying to insult me. I am a level headed guy however and thank you for sharing your observations with me. I'm certain they will help me improve in my future reviews.

*I* am most certainly someone who has NOT established himself as a competent critic. No, as of now, I wrote one review, and you can see that right beside yours. Read it if you wish, and comment...It's nice to have feedback, and I'm sure it would help me imporve. Besides...I joined RMN later than you.
As for the getting amotional part: I might have been unclear, but what I meant, that because it is obvious that you became emotional, and the people here don't know you, they might question the creditability of your review. Raging people usually say things they don't mean, but at the very least things you wouldn't call constructive criticism.
As I said, you make some valid points, but for someone, who never played the game, this whole review might just seem like an anti-fan's raving (okay, I'm exaggerating) and might simply decide not to beleive anything you wrote down. And if you want to influence people with this, then you might consider trying to be a bit more objective, until you establish a name for yourself, so people will know that toria's reviews are useful, even if he suddenly start writing as a raving lunatic (I'm exaggerating again, no offense meant).
Although, I mostly disagree with your review, and I think you missed the games good parts while playing, you are entitled to your opinion and there is nothing wrong with expressing it. I'm just talkink about style here.

About this review: It's incredibly harsh. It starts off as a decent negative review, but the author unfortunately fires him/herself up while poining out the many bad points she or he found in the game, that it turns out as one of those typical "I WILL SHOW YOU! HAHAHAHA" revs, which tries to be sarcastic, funny and most of all so crushing, that no one stops to debate, as they just "ooh" and "aah" at the seemingly overwhelming competence of the author. On the other hand, people, who have some experiance with such writings will be so overly sceptic about beleiving any of the review, that even if it points out something important, they won't beleive it.
I did play QE, and so I know that this review makes saveral good points, but it's just a shame, that the author got so emotional. This style is only convincing from someone, who has already established themselfs as just and competent critic.Ffor the new ones, it's the more objective, less heated way. (This is, obviusly only my opinion, and might not be true, but so far, these observations proved useful to me.)
I'm not really sure that I will write a review of Quintessence, but I might, so I won't go into details about my "views" but here is what I think anyway:
While the story in itself is not that spectacular, (although it's decent, I think) the sounds and music, the effects, and the "directing" makes the atmosphere really amazing. That is what most people mix up with story, I beleive. It has it's flaws, and indeed, the genere RPG does not fit completely, but I enjoyed my time spent with this game.
