I think the reason everything was so hard in the 4th one was because of how much was thrown at you in the beginning, like I had no idea what to do with skills, or what I should buy at the store. I think you should ease people into it, even if it is a short game.

Personally I think the story is what killed the last boss project. Made it drag a lot. But do what you will, I don't usually play this series anyways. (Too hard for my low tolerance of difficulty!)
