Go Make me a Sandwich: Sexuality in Bayonetta (and other games)

author=treeghost
In a serious work, no character should be a sex object first and whatever else second, and females consistently get the short end of the stick.
Soul Calibur and Metroid are very serious games.

They where up until Taki and Ivy became the poster girls of the next issue of Playboy, but lets face it more than half the games we've played draw fuel from some form of stereotype that clearly sets a predefined idea of how certain genders, ethnic groups, etc behave and it quite honestly pisses a number of people off. The games themselves has been less about improving on the old and making the games fun and more on selling with tactics like sex appeal or 3rd Party characters like Yoda and Spawn to boost sales.

You do know, if a woman gets pissed at a game in this sense, stop freaking paying attention to that game. It isn't like an actual man, being sexually abusive to you, the women, to your face. It is a game in which isn't being forced onto the buyers. If you don't like it and feel it is wrong, you turn your head. It isn't real, and if it were real, would've been stopped already.

Also if you're feeling bad for the FAKE woman in the 'said' game, then you need to get locked up and treated for being mentally insane.

A game, is a game, is a game. No need to start pulling some feminist bullshit out. that would be like Peta being pissed at fake animal abuse.
You're making too much sense so get outta here. People with nothing important to do or think about need something to argue about...lest they realize that they have nothing important to do or think about. I don't know anyone that will accept the fact that they and their thoughts are useless in the grand scheme. Making people feel that they and their thoughts are important and valid...the fuel that America runs on.

As for you two, you honestly surprised the hell out of me with comments like those.
@Thiamor, Regardless of whether not it's real most games and movies that portray abuse of some form are more often than not based on events that happen everyday. That's right, somewhere in this paradise we call earth a women is getting beaten or locked in a cellar somewhere with nothing but her abuser there. More often than not, gamers are reminded at some point of time in the conscience that these games aren't always make believe.

@Kindredz, You're joking right, if you really think that there is some almighty power that has our entire future written out or that there is no power to the many individuals that don't work in the government then you need to get your head examined. Slavery, Women's Rights Movement, and Gay Marriage. I'm pretty sure each of those went against "Fate" and Government plenty of times.

Bugfixes? I hope?

Seems the essence bug is half fixed, Half my equipped essence are currently gone from Wish >_>.

Edifice - A Slightly Less Decrepit Version

That one Dragon in the Volcano is a pain in the ass. Took out my initial party without breaking a sweat he did. Other than that very very fun game, and now I'm contemplating what to buy in the shop.

Bugfixes? I hope?

The power scale of the third floor boss (did a three floor run) is ridiculously high. Breath of Fire was easily doing 600-1500 damage to characters and Hypnotic Deliriums success rate makes it near impossible to avoid. On the other hand the boss itself resisted just about every single status effect thrown at it aside from a lucky petrify and stun.

Review scoring: standardization, professionalism, etc.

If that's the case then there should be sections each with an individual score that's averaged. For example Story, Graphics, Audio, Gameplay, and Immersion, each having an individual score between 0 and 5 that's added together, averaged, and rounded

Review scoring: standardization, professionalism, etc.

Honestly I'm surprised this topic went on for so long that said, if a game is good it will get a good score, if a game is bad, not fun, or a blatant ripoff of something else it will get a score that reflects this. Nobody really cares about graphics and/or the music used in a game but rather how it is used in the game.

Whether you made a game to reflect professional level quality or made a game just for kicks, if it's good or bad that's the pretty much going to be reflected in it's score. Not everyone is going to make a 3 star game on their first try nor is everyone attempting to make a 1 star game. We simply make the games because we want to and learn from our previous attempts to better ourselves as developers. Instead of bitching about how most of the games are going to be rated x amount of stars if we use this or that setup for reviews we should be focused more on why we got those scores in the first place. And stop complaining about the commercial/professional level review vs hobby reviews because you're not only lying to yourselves by curving the score but you're also ignoring the fact that your game may really be as bad as someone says. If it's bad, learn from your mistakes.

The essence bug seems to be related to the equip system, looks like the last four or so slots get emptied out for some odd reason when switching characters I presume.

No, I was in the earth dungeon and I made a quick save right on the second floor, not sure what it was but I know the song was sinasin.
Also it looks like the save went through even though the RGSS Player crashed.
Looks like I'm in the Triopolis Trifecta Triumverate. here is a screen shot of the inventory

'Tis Released: Edifice Download and Known Issues

Definitely a fun game but some minor issues.
* When I went to save and quit to make a quicksave, the game crashed
* After clearing the first floor I had about 90 Chilly Harps and 60 Fiery Harps
* Enemies seem to jump back up on the turn order phase after sleep is lifted.

Other than that, the characters could probably use a weak attack with no cooldown, I often found myself being able to do absolutely nothing but defend a handful of times.

If you don't want a game to be rated less than a two then put effort into your work. It's honestly that simple. If your game has effort put into it then it won't receive a low score.

And honestly, not to sound like a dick/harsh, but don't post if you're not going to add anything to the discussion, it's just a waste of time and space.
