Hi. I draw things. Sometimes make games too I guess.
They Took My Beloved
A visual novel horror for the Halloween 2021 event.

Commonplace Book

For the event I resorted back to Ren'Py and had to slog through learning the screen language all over again. It was much pain but I managed to slap in a working combat system and some puzzle elements, aside from just messing around with GUI.

"101 Hideous secret society—widespread—horrible rites in caverns under familiar scenes—one’s own neighbour may belong."

My brain says psychological horror after getting the theme so that's what I go with. Here's a super short video for the mid-point showcase!

The video quality is trash, I can't edit videos lol I'm so sorry

I tried your game and I really liked it that I could play as an arachne and the intro scene really drew me in but... yeah I have no idea what to do next, the forest just keeps looping (and I tried several ties to map it and fully explore it) I tried the fishing game also which was nice but that was it, I looked through the inventory read the letters, apparently I need to craft something somewhere ad maybe give a toy to9 a kid, but other than that I have no idea what to do or where to go.

Hello! Thanks for playing. Here are some things that might help you out.

At the bottom right of the Pause menu, you can always see the main objective. It'll tell you things like look for someone or obtain some items. You can try talking to some of the important-looking characters, that usually tell you everything. For optional places like the forest, however, you need to find hints about how to navigate the area. You can find a poem in one of the houses that might tell you what to look out for guidance in the forest.

YES! I liked it a lot and I was aware of the deadline, in any case I had fun I mean, combat may be difficult but it's not terrible or too hard as long as you know what you need to do. At first I won wasting many potions, then I retried (it was, you can guess it... the Leviathan!) and I was able to win easily without wasting resources. Same happened when you play as Iora, since she has a totally different set of abilities and took me... three tries I think!

Oh I assumed that there is no way to find the item in the forest, since I tried that but... the place is extremely lethal so I set to use the safest solution of selling lots of fishes and buy the 99 seaweed... it's just 2475 gold if I am right.

Uhm it seems that I missed the other games, anyway this was a good entry for the contest. Really.

Whoa. The Leviathan was actually supposed to be unbeatable without an item that makes the battle easier. Solving the forest's maze gets you a quest item to obtain said special item, which reduces Leviathan's healing and disables her special abilities. If you managed to defeat her without it, many congrats to you! It's not supposed to even be possible. Note to self to make things like that more obvious.

Thanks again for the review!
I did that not once, but twice and without upgrading the equipment! Hehe it wasn't even the hardest battle (I mean it's 1 vs 1!), I just used bleeding+poison, and before it started healing I kept using the ability that makes it skip his turn, so this can be done!
The forest was too scary for me (I mean there are really few ways to heal)! Lol

Ah, the bleeding+poison combo does work wonders. Maybe the Leviathan should be buffed hmmmmmm.....

You can actually craft a potion from Victor's workshop that will make you immune to the forest's spore mist to make exploration easier! We'll make it more clear in a later update since it might be a little hidden away. In earlier versions the 'feesh' used to give full health when consumed, so maybe we'll also just restore that feature for healing when outside battle.

Thank you for the review! I'm happy you liked it enough to give it four stars!

The making of the game was tough, having many things scrapped and remade multiple times or simply rushed due to the deadline of the event (the orcs blocking the path was also just a rush-job plot device to force players to explore all of Svartalle's maps). We didn't have anyone to beta-test so that may be why the combat ended up being kind of difficult despite the game supposedly being casual. Developer bias, probably. Admittedly we probably spent too much time having fun making the fishing simulator instead. The price of potions was insanely expensive on purpose though, to urge players to craft them instead. Also because markup prices and taxes in Svartalle are insane - which is a real-world problem! We went crazy on the save points because an earlier game we worked on together had a problem of people dying and losing way more progress than should be acceptable. In this game, it probably wasn't as necessary though.

I have to agree the weirdly differing art styles for some characters are too noticeable. FT,FT was rushed a lot compared to other games me and CrazyBabi worked on. Assets like the Seamstress and Victor were reused from artwork I've made a while back and even puzzle elements like the forest map are reused from CrazyBabi's old projects. I'm glad none of them was too much of an issue though!

As for the mermaid quest, you can only either buy the entire seaweed stock or bring the item from the forest. We wanted to make the game as linear as possible, so there are not really any branches other than that optional thing with the Leviathan (which I see you managed to do, so I'm glad to know the puzzle wasn't too complex). The story is a delicate problem because I'm still having trouble with writing too much or too little. Given the shortness of the game, in the end, I had to squeeze everything in and losing the chance to explain everything. Maybe in a later game, we could try to expand it. Having people enjoy our work is surely a good incentive to do that! Thank you for playing our game!

I'm glad me and CrazyBabi got to participate even if very few ended up submitting. I played the other two games and they were great!

Muscovite Arabesque had an interesting story. I didn't know the reference for it, but the way it was delivered was easily digestible so I could understand the story just fine. It would've benefitted a lot more from BGM though.
More complicated choices would also be great to make the endings more diverse.

None Pizza with Left Beef Ch2 pt 1 helped me scratch my itch for puzzle games so I definitely enjoyed it. The developer team must've put a lot of work into it because it shows in the level of quality. I love the puzzles and the way the characters speak, as they feel very distinct. I can't find any flaws for the game aside from not having the option to tone down the volume and me getting stuck a little midway.
The mouldy cake couldn't seem to be taken from the front, only from the back.

Hopefully next year the Gaymak event will have more participants! I know there were some issues with the one this year, but I hope that doesn't dissuade anyone from participating in the next one.

Submitted in time!

The other submissions had such nice game page designs so I tried my best. There was so much stuff we rushed in the last few days, but hopefully, the game will still be enjoyable!

Almost finished! Currently adding polish and bgm. The fishing simulator is working perfectly so I'm satisfied.

Is there a possibility of you releasing a Mac version? I can beta test if need be.

We don't use Mac so we're not very familiar with the requirements for a version built for it. Sorry!
