I admit I like to use them. Main reason because I feel like the normal tint isn't enough. Add some light lasers to make SURE it's day.

Btw, maybe explaining why they don't make sense will justify your point. Just a tip.

The sun is a giant light source that shines light in pretty much all directions. The light beams only really occur in life when there are several tall things blocking that light, especially in a forest.

The problem is that people tend to put them in almost every setting, where the overhead view of the tiles (especially when there are tree graphics that don't seem tall enough to create that kind of light) almost work against that kind of directional lighting. In addition, such overlays tend to muddle up the details of the screen and make things look kind of blurred and messy, whereas the default actually leaves things clean.

So unless they are used the right way they are as bad as lens flares.

Like what the hell is creating those streaks? Did I just get a visit from our heavenly host? It just looks excessive.

My only explanation is it is a cloudy day.
That's it, you bring up a good point.

Use cloud overlays if you want a little extra!
It works if it's a dark day and you have the light shining through. I've seen it used a few times quite well - the start of Dragon Quest 6 (or was it 5... maybe it was 4) used it particularly well. If you use it, do it subtly at least. Not strong rays of heavenly beams.

Yeah, it technically makes sense if you've got a cloudy day with beams of light shining through the gaps in the clouds (or maybe in a dense jungle or something?) but...

It's one of those things that people overuse so frequently without thinking about if it's appropriate or not. They've become so synonymous with mediocrity that I'd honestly hesitate to use them even if it was appropriate >.>;;;
Maybe because most of the guys who use those heavenly rays have no idea how to add atmosphere to their maps. :/ The opposite applies to horror games. They just slap on some cheap lighting effects and too-dark rooms.

I ditched the heavenly rays of light a while ago. I just prefer to use a cloud overlay to create light and shadow.
When you mentioned this status, I thought you were referring to the beams of light across the censored parts in...you know, anime.

I think it depends on how you use them.* People tend to overuse them.

But it can work in the right amount and in small maps, like in a forest clearing.

*this can be said just about anything...

More like a lot of people don't know how to utilize it right, especially when people don't bother to put in appropriate shadows to accommodate for all the overlays they're adding. It just makes the image look kind of flat and muddy.
