The Misaos in Review

I've never played the Way, but I'm really impressed with how this LunC guy's fans are talking about him the same way fans of Evangelion were talking about Anno after the ending of that. Maybe he's had a nervous breakdown and come to hate his fans, too.

Still, it's impressive to have a work that causes that much talk, even if it's in the negative. That's a title that's made an impact. You can't really ask for more than that!

And you are...? (THE INTRODUCTION THREAD)

I am a 23 year old art major and the raddest dude on the planet. My handle comes from the somewhat tacky font style, and was intended to be the sort of thing that sounded clever the first time you heard it, but lost a bit of impact each time you heard it afterwards, like with the name of Homer's band on the Simpsons. It was something of a joke about how common names beginning with "Shadow" are, though by now it's probably just treated as one of them. I've been using it for something like twelve years now.

I enjoy things that are nice and have a love-hate relationship with things that aren't. I take great joy in visual culture, especially cartoons. I also like language and playful, experimental usage thereof. I have adopted a lot of slang from other cultures and time periods into my own ideolect for funsies, the most noticeable probably being my overuse of britishisms. One of my biggest pet peeves is elitism, though I sometimes worry that might be a bit hypocritical considering my opinion of....let's say chavishness. My politics lean heavily towards libertarianism (as opposed to authoritarianism: I have no affiliation with or interest in the Libertarian Party) and slightly towards liberalism. My religious beliefs are completely daffy and I do not expect anyone to respect them much.

I am semi-active on the periphery of the RPG Maker community and the communities that have spawned from it, especially #rm2k_anime on Aniverse. Most people who were active early on in the RPG Maker community probably already know (and love) me.

If I were a hero, my archetype would be somewhere between The Fool and The Messiah

Also, I may or may not be the Kwisatz Haderach.

Aghhh help

And if you're using RMXP, it's actually illegal to distribute the RTP, according to the EULA. You're supposed to direct people to Enterbrain's website. Dunno if you're using RMXP or not, though.

One thing you might consider doing is reducing the bitdepth of your graphics. You're rarely going to use more than 256 unique shades in a single sprite, for example. Tilesets might need to remain 16-bit or 32-bit, but charactersets and battlers can probably be brought down to 256. A lot of battle animations probably can be, too. It's usually not a big enough deal to bother with, but if you're going to be making something this big you probably need to treat efficiency as a huge deal, as if you were running on an OLD computer.

Also, PLEASE be sure you've taken Ocean's advice. If you're using BMPs for graphics, (or WAVs for sound for that matter), you really, really, really need to convert them to compressed formats. PNG is a lossless compression, so you won't suffer any quality loss from converting, and you're not going to find many people that can tell the difference between raw WAVs and MP3s, so those need to be converted too.

Also, a word to the wise: if it's going to be this big, I sincerely hope we're talking all original resources here. I would be severely pissed if I downloaded a game this big only to find out they were all graphics and sound I had seen used in better ways before.

Weird error when trying to submit a tutorial

author=Darken link=topic=105.msg1526#msg1526 date=1183636921
I get some "UnicodeEncodeError at /submit/article/" along with: 'latin-1' codec can't encode character u'\u2019' in position 2892: ordinal not in range(256). This is sort of weird, could anyone help?
Did you include a non-standard character in one of the text boxes? Like some sort of accent mark, characters from another alphabet, or maybe a weird ANSI thing?

That said, they probably ought to change the page to accept a different encoding. UTF-8, maybe.

i need guns.

Yeah, I think as your request stands, there's going to be a ten day waiting period and you'll have to prove you're not a convicted felon before we can fill it.

Non-RM Engines: What's stopping you?

Basically the things you put. I use RPG Maker XP as middleware, and let it handle the stuff that is going to be the same for every project, so I only have to bother with the quirks I want to put into the game. And there is a lot more of that stuff that's going to be the same for every project than is generally handled by other amateur middleware options.

It's also nice to have a bunch of resources to work with as "placeholders," even if the RTP stuff is eventually going to be replaced. I can't think of the number of times I've sat down to program and made all sorts of progress until I get to the point that I need to run debug tests to see if certain graphical features are working. Sound, too.

Japan Time

I just want Marth to return.
I'll still get and love the game even if he isn't in it, but he was my favorite character to play as.
Along with Falco, who isn't likely to return.
I think Marth's one of the most likely character to be replaced, along with Roy. We'll probably get at least one character from the Fire Emblem series who plays almost exactly like them, but I expect it would be Ike at the moment.

Japan Time

Assist Trophies seem pretty neat. I mean they're basically like Pokeballs, only not series-specific. Also Samurai Goro more or less confirms that Captain Falcon's returning, since he's got Captain Falcon's icon in the post's header.

Reviewing

I think there should be a spot of staff reviews, just because reviews mean more when they come from a more accountable or visible person. On a purely preference basis, who am I to care if 'randomrpgplayer232' didn't like the storyline or not, but I think I would take a note if WIP appreciated the story line's complexities.
We're all amateurs, though. I mean a lot of us know WIP to varying degrees and each of us knows (on a person-to-person basis) how much his opinion means to us specifically, but who's to say his opinion is really more important than 'randomrpgplayer232's' in general just because he runs the website?

I don't mean that as a slight to WIP, I'm just saying that running or being on the staff of RM.net doesn't really make your insight any clearer, it just makes your voice louder.

Sovan Jedi's art topic of arty farty fun!

Clockwork zombie haunts my dreams.

Say, Sovan, are you going to take part in the EB Siege Envelope Art dealie? You would probably need to send in an envelope pretty soon, if so. It says to have things in by the 10th, (postmarked by the 6th is their suggestion) but I assume snail mail takes longer to get here from crazy countries where they drive on the left side of the road!
