SNOWY_FOX'S PROFILE

I'm an amateur composer and game designer, currently trying to turn my hobbies into a career. I've been dabbling with RPG Maker for many years, and recently also started tinkering with Godot, but I'm yet to release anything more than a small prototype.

Music is my main creative focus, and my contributions to the RMN Music Pack earned me the Judges' Choice award, and I also joint-won the Community Choice award with Miles "Kunsel" Mulet. I also contributed to and mastered its sequel, RMN Music Pack 2. I currently live in Oxfordshire, England.

RMN Music Pack

GG, all. :3 Wish I could have done more too, but, well, then I put Skyrim on and the next thing I knew it was a couple of weeks later.

This has been an awesome event, though. Do they have music-related events often in this community?

Okay, I've made some major tweaks to the mix and mastering of Caverns, and resubmitted. Turns out the bus EQ at the end of the mix was making more of a problem than it was solving - it was lumping all the sounds together, which I think is what was making the mid range instruments sound so flat.

So, instead, I've taken it out altogether and gone into more detail with the EQ inserted on the problematic sounds - especially the piano, which is where all that excess bass turned out to be coming from. I could have changed the piano sound or lowered its volume or velocity, but those hard, low hits were kinda important to the tune, so a heavy low cut took care of the issue without taking away from the piano's purpose in the piece.

I also turned the pan-changing pulses down and reduced their mid-range a fair bit. Combined with what I'd done to the piano, this freed up a ton of room for the other bassy instruments in the mix, giving the bass drum and bass synth more presence, and allowing me to turn the darbouka drums up a bit without fear of their bassier end muddying things up even more.

It's quite surprising how much extra something in a mix can give when you take away whatever's eating all its pies.

That cave one is super cool, Snowy_Fox.

Thanks. ^^ Gonna resubmit, though, the mix could use a little work.

RMN Music Pack

Phew, finally got around to finishing that! Made a new submission, some dark, dank cave exploring music with some electronica thrown in. Much as I enjoy making the orchestral stuff, I couldn't hold off my love affair with synthesizers forever.

This track also features the first and probably only recorded element of my submissions, courtesy of my beloved SH-01 synth. So, no, I couldn't quantize the few timing mistakes, but that take held water and my arm was aching from reaching over to the filter knob, so I used it.

Now to figure out what I'm gonna do next...

I think you guys should stipulate a date for closing submissions, like a week or two before the actual contest's end, so you guys have time and no more songs are submitted.

That does make sense. The judges will surely have a less hectic time of listening over the songs once the submissions stop coming in.

Starts 11/08/2012 12:00 AM
Ends 02/09/2013 12:00 AM
Voting Ends 02/16/2013 12:00 AM

Isn't that pretty much how they're doing it anyway?

Still, I'm pretty glad Happy's decided to extend the deadline by a month. I thought I was only gonna be able to get one more track in, but now I should be able to do another two or three at least. :3 I'm having so much fun with this event!

can anyone explain the difference between "Ends" and "Voting Ends"?

"Ends" is the deadline for submitting. "Voting ends," I'm assuming, is when the music pack will be finalized.

RMN Music Pack

I dunno... judging or no judging, we've had two months to be making music. An extension wouldn't hurt anyone, though. Especially if it means more music! It just means a bit more work for the judges.

Also, added my new submission! It's the full version of The Ritual. Like the choir only version, it's meant as a temple/church theme, but with all the extra elements, I think it would also work well as the intro backing for some games.

Like before, I've kept it mastered to a consistent RPG Maker volume, and included loop comments.

I have been slacking so much. >: Can somebody please arrange to send a guy around to poke me with a stick really hard if I go more than 24 hours without making any music?

RMN Music Pack

Suddenlynewsubmission!

Solid89, I got some temple-esque choir hymn for ya, fresh off the (virtual) rack. I was able to find a few fitting choir sounds, and spent most my time on this mixing them together in different ways until I got to what it is now.

I've included "choir only" in the name because I intend to make an alternate version with more elements, such as strings, harp, some woodwinds, and of course an organ. Anyone have any thoughts on that? Should I leave it as it is and do something else?

Once again, any critique on this one is totally welcome too.

RMN Music Pack

I've resubmitted Tranquil Town, having made some changes to the mix based on the judges' feedback. Should sound more pleasant now.

There's a bunch in the factory soundbank, some aren't even *that* bad. Especially the Thor FemaleChoir one. (I'm using 4.0)

Reason 4 was awesome, and Thor is a brilliant synth. I urge you to upgrade to 6.5 when you can afford to, though. Audio tracks and Rack Extensions blow Reason wide open.
