I feel like if your gam is inspired by Earthbound or Yume Nikki, you probably don't need to bother to say it, because the influence will be very obvious.

This isn't shade I just noticed that we have a very shallow pool of influential titles.

Inspired by Dragon Quest 2 and 5 (but not any of the others), Super Mario Land 6 Golden Coins, the classic TV show Get Smart, Xenogears, the youtuber and voiceactor ProZD, that feeling you get when you're picked last for dodgeball, and the sweet sweet taste of Cinnamon Toast Crunch

See that's a mood, there!

I'm not sure WHAT mood, but it's certainly distinct!

When I was 16 years old I bought my first personal pc and the first pc games I played were these: https://www.mobygames.com/game-group/la-la-land-series

I've tried to emulate the sensation of existential futility those games made 16 year old me feel ever since.
i dunno man, i found out that alot of people on this site apparently dont know much about yume nikki

I mean, at that point, there's no loss, because it'd be the same as me going "Inspired by the Adventures of Josh"*

Either you know what that means, in which case you can definitely already tell, or you don't, in which case it means nothing and serves no actual purpose!

* the Adventures of Josh is a comic I wrote in high school/college and never actually made. It means nothing to anyone except like a dozen people.

My game Yummybound is inspired by Final Fantasy and Doom 3.
We also have a large number of games inspired by Undertale now.

Which was inspired by Earthbound.

There's two levels of inspiration here.

(This was the only good reaction image I had in my locker atm)

That is a very good reaction image, TBF
I haven't played Earthbound, Undertale or Yume Nikki but people who play my games keep saying I must be a big fan of them. That's just how the cookie crumbles I suppose.

It's the combo of "stylish, cartoony art" and "quirky with a sense of humor." Like I said, there aren't a whole lot of that kind of jRPG around, so people assume that anything vaguely similar is inspired by.

Basically the pool is SO shallow that everything is just "Final Fantasy," "Earthbound," or "Undertale, which is actually also Earthbound." Except for the horror games which are all "Yume Nikki." Doesn't matter whether you actually were inspired by them, they're just the only things anyone knows. :(
Yume Nikki definitely inspired a whole lot of games, but I feel some games that are said to be inspired by Earthbound aren't really. It's a very broad genre.

Two games that directly inspired me to make similar games were Space Funeral (with heavy influences on Polymorphous Perversity) and Cart Life (influencing THERAPIST: mind manager).

Thing is, a lot of what I see is people looking at character sprites and saying, "Oh, this is like Earthbound/Yume Nikki", so people aren't even bothering to find out more before judging the game based on appearance, and frankly, there isn't a lot you can do with 16x16/32x32 sprites to make them look really unique when thousands of games have used sprites that size.
I wish more people would label SMT inspirations. VVTZ had it on the demo, not on the full product/steam page. It's what made me check it out ASAP and I was fully satisfied with the end result.

totes relevant lol

Maybe I should put as a feature that my game was NOT inspired by Earthbound, because that's a really common feedback for PotF.
my game is inspired by my Mother
My games are all very Mother but I don't really advertise that and others don't mention it. Probably because I strongly disagree with cartoony graphics/trippy backgrounds = Mother.

Never even played yume
