STATUS

Whenever I post a screenshot the only thing I really truly WANT to get feedback on is my fucking DIALOGUE.

Should probably post a script instead.
Whilst the status was half joking, still...I'm gonna have to fill in Strongly Disagree for that one, Sooz.

Don't get me wrong; feedback on how things look can be useful and I'll try to take useful feedback where I can get it, and I desire feedback on gameplay very nearly as much as I crave feedback on my (oh so charming, oh so witty lol) dialogue, but no one can really give feedback on gameplay from a screenshot (well, 99/100 times).

I gam mak to satisfy my frustrated unfulfilled dreams of being a television/screenwriter or writing professionally for the stage; that's just as valid as someone who does it to satisfy their unfulfilled dreams of being a professional pixel artist in a time when such a job was common in the big vidya gaems industry, designing maps for the big vidya gaems industry or the guy who does the lighting effects, or the UI.

I make RPG Maker games because I'm good at writing and borderline obsessed with mechanics. I also do it because I have discovered over the years that I literally can't not make games. They pour out of me. I have no control over it. As far as the 'pretty screenshot minigame', I have upped my visuals game to the level of 'not grossly offensive to the human eye' and I'm happy to plateau there. : )

Edit 1: Also, frankly? That kind of attitude may contribute to why the writing in 80% of the videogames industry is fucking shit. "What, you're excited to be a writer? You think you might have some talent as a writer to show off? Great! Get the fuck out of this business, go write movies instead!". Indie games are worse than most but at least they have the excuse of not being able to afford a professional writer (we're not expensive and we always put out for the money) but those things are sometimes made on practically no budget.

I have played more FREE RPG Maker games with writing better than I've found in most-or-all commercial games than I can count on my fingers, and that is fucking sad. But it is also evidence that more creators than me have similar driving motivations. Edit 2: (Oh...I made a six paragraph response to your one line post...whoops.)

I feel like you're ranting to the wind here.

Posting a script is definitely the way to get people to look at your dialogue. You could also list the screenshot in the "looking for feedback" section and leave a comment like "Looking for advice on dialogue." Honestly, keep in mind that "looking-for-feedback" posts should probably be kept pretty separate from self-promotional ones.

If you post a script, people know you want them to look at the dialog. If you post a screenshot, people assume you want them to look at the visual bits.

Wouldn't be the first time.

*Edit: I'm perfectly aware of the thread title, and that it's initial purpose is for game descriptions. However, if one wants their dialog to be looked at, that's probably the best thread on the site for that.
I'm pretty sure you can tell less (or maybe as much) about a game's dialogue from a screenshot than you can its gameplay.

Assuming it's that regular four-line dialogue box that has room for maybe a whole catchphrase.

The rant is slightly random and there are many ways to respond to it. I guess your main point are dialogues and writing in games.

1. Regarding your screenshots 3 wise rmners said enough.
But it would actually be nice to have a thread, in which we share pieces of script we either need to help with or want to share, because we think it's good.

2. Video games and Films are two completely different mediums. Film narration isn't good for video games, which can go thanks to emergent storytelling go in directions film never dreamt of. I think the original arcade Mario is actually quite good example of narration games can create.

Hear, hear!

Video games are a really fascinating storytelling medium because they have a potential for interaction that's not found in any medium. It's super hard to write that kind of stuff, though, so a lot of games just end up being movies interrupted by gameplay. :/ (Which is not necessarily a bad thing, but one needs to remember the player in all this!)
