So I'd named my game "Under A Killing Moon" after a song by a band. Googling that phrase today I learned it's already the name of a 1994 Tex Murphy adventure game? Little late in the process for this but I need a new title.

Personally, that name is so badass that unless you're planning to sell the game or want to be able to google it easier, you may want to still keep the name XD Even tho I completely understand the urge to want to change it
Beneath a Killing Moon?

Maybe substitute Under to something similar?

IMO if it's a 25 year old game you can keep it and just make sure to emphasize RPG or something.

First off, THANK YOU. I thought it was badass too. <3

Secondly, I am planning on selling it commercially as it happens.

Like I just told my pal Uzuki from RMW, I doubt there's a law--at least not one anyone's going to bother enforcing--keeping me from calling my game the exact same thing. It's just that apparently, this Tex Murphy game is actually like, really famous and well known (just not, obviously, to me/us) as an exemplary specimen of adventure game from that era, and in the event my game to any degree gets noticed, at all, I don't want games journalism broadly speaking to have to refer to it as " "Under A Killing Moon" (not the Tex Murphy one)".

(Having not bothered to wikipedia anything, I think that the Tex Murphy games were made by the same person as the Gabriel Knight games that came out roughly around the time and IIRC that person was one of the very first women in the vidyagames industry in a position to actually exercise creative control and respected for it.)

Also I can totally imagine a universe where the RPG thing backfires so emphasizing that this is Under A Killing Moon The RPG leads to fans of the adventure game (if any are still alive jesus FUCK that game is almost older than me) thinking that it is...an RPG version of the 1994 adventure game lol.

I'm pretty happy with my new title but I'm not spilling it here, it feels too built up now lol.

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

I would just go with "Underneath a Killing Moon" or "Under This Killing Moon" honestly.

If you want to get fancy, pick another line from the song's lyrics. I don't know enough about your game to know which lines actually embody what the game is about though. But without any context, "Tongue Held Tight" or "The Blood on our Black Gloves" is a killer title.

Was NOT expecting LockeZ to be a Thrice fan (more likely he just googled up the lyrics but the thought amuses me). That said:

(Don't worry, most items have a more informative description, not one that's just "flavor text", but in this case I couldn't resist.)

Incidentally, the game (probably overdue for a game page) is about witches & witch hunts. The literal kind of witch hunt, not like, McCarthyism or the HUAC. "Spanish Inquisition comes to Central-Eastern Europe (sociopolitical basis for the fantasy world, but not the geographic one, comes from ~15th-17th century Czechoslovakia, Romania, et al., the capital of the game world is essentially Prague) + oh yeah magic is real + Lovecraft" is a decent elevator pitch (minus that nerdy parenthetical bit).

The new title is Malleus Maleficarum. NOT AFTER THE AFI SONG. The AFI song is a coincidence (not that I don't like early AFI, actually I really do but..."When You Were Young" was named after a Killers song, about three of my most recent/or current non-RM projects have their names taken from songs, the other title I was considering for this which will almost certainly wind up as an episode title or subtitle, La Curandera, is the title of a Clutch song--clearly this is apparently my thing but I can't let it be the thing I do all the damn time to the point of caricature).

Anyway, it's named after the same thing the AFI song is, the 15th Century manual on witch hunting. One English translation is "Hammer of the Witches" (German: Hexenhammer) which is pretty badass.

I did have to google the song lyrics, but I also listened to the song and I like it. You now have permission to imagine Hugh Laurie doing an air guitar while heavy metal songs about witch-burning play on his stereo.
