Air RPG Review

I don't have a problem with this review itself, but it does bother me when games become the subject of negative attention because they were featured.

I don't think there's anything here indicating that this is getting negative attention based on the fact that it was featured. Personally, I was pointing out that anything featured is going to get both more negative and more positive attention than an unfeatured game - it's logical to assume you're going to see at least one bad review/comment/whatever, especially if a game is up on the front page.

It was a experiment. Not a full game.
It doesn't matter if this is just an "experiment" or not, it's a featured game, apparently. And you should still be able to take criticism based on your experiments - isn't that why we experiment? To take risks, do things we normally wouldn't do, and learn from those risks?

People on this website are always being too critical of peoples games.

Because we're here to get feedback. Games don't make it to the front page just so the maker can fellate themselves. This is someone who did not enjoy the game and wrote up a very, very informative, detailed explanation of why. You couldn't possibly ask for something better out of a gaming community (except for someone who DID enjoy the game to do the same thing, because nobody ever wants to hear anything negative ever shhhh). Whether or not you agree with it is your opinion - and disagreeing doesn't make this overly-critical just because you disagree.

Finally, I guess this fits in here – the pacing of the intro is bad. You have difficulty settings, then the fake loading screen, then the opening credits, then the opening cutscene... it takes entirely too long, and ended up irritating me more than engaging me. I say cut the loading screen and opening credits, and let the player jump right into the thick of it instead of forcing them to sit through a bunch of stuff they don’t need to see to understand what’s going on.

Just goes to show you can't please everyone. The hintscreen is there specifically because a few players mentioned being confused and not knowing what to do right out of the starting gate. It is also all of 30 seconds (literally just 1800 frames, total, 360 frames per message) so...yeah.

I made the exact same complaint. 30 seconds is actually a huge chunk of time when you're trying to start playing a game that you may have never played before - it just becomes a totally unnecessary delay. There are better ways of conveying the information contained in your hints through the gameplay itself than smashing them into a bunch of "hint screens" that all flip by a little bit too quickly and ultimately just delay you from getting to play.

I also have to point out that the "crafting" section of this review, the whole focus of your game, pretty much says "yeah it happens." That's kind of how I felt about the gameplay. I was just going through a typical vanilla RPG with the added tedium of success-bar over and over to grab stuff to go pick items out of lists, instead of buying it from a shop. I'm sure there's PLENTY of things you can do to improve the game, but you really should focus on the fact that your game is about crafting and your crafting system drew little to no notice.

BTW, why do you need to equip your axe to cut logs or fishing rod to fish? Why isn't it enough to just have them in your backpack? Furthermore, those quick button icons don't help much when you've remapped your keys like I did.

I said this too

It's just that my experience with this thing appears to have been so incredibly different from your experience that I'm struggling to see how we could have played the same game.

This happens a lot in real life.

OPINIONS ARE HAPPENING

I have to admit that the reviewer only looked at the beginning of the game, and that's never a good a review and it's considered biased at best,

Sometimes a game makes a horrible impression right off the bat. If you can write a review of THIS LENGTH based on "the beginning" then I don't see why the review carries any less weight. Why would someone play deeper into the game if they had this much of an issue with the beginning? If you only played ten minutes of a game and they were so unenjoyable as to make you quit, that is valid material to write a review with. You do not have to play a game from start to finish and beat the extra optional final endgame boss to judge it.

Ouch. I counted the scripts. Theres 50+ custom scripts. How do you think I made the friendly battlers or the bestiary or the scan or the shoot arrows or the multiple equipment slots?

Okay, that is true, although I guess I should have more carefully defined "custom scripts." There's some customization, and some scripting, but everything feels very... default. It's probably my inexperience with the engine, so you can ignore this.

You do know certain skills are used to kill certain enemies. You need to constantly be thinking about how you can win instead of just pushing the attack button.

No, I do not know this, because nothing/nobody EVER tells me this.

I guess I can hit the player with class information in the game. I know Dragon Quest 3 didn't, but people still love that game. Chances are, I'll over inform people about each class.

DQ3 also came out many years ago when games were held to a different standard. I'm sure that, while people love that game, nobody will ever specifically say "You know what I like ABOUT DQ3? The fact that I was totally uninformed about the classes' abilities." Yeah. I really like that you updated with class info though! This rocks.

The whip lets you stun enemies without a skill and you can attack flying or tall enemies WITHOUT A SKILL. The whip also gives you agility and its a stronger weapon! Perhaps I need more townspeople to tell you that.

While this is true I'm sure, in the review when I said there was no reason to use whips, I meant there was no explanation IN the game as to WHY I should use the whip. Perhaps the whip's description should be "Hits Flying, Tall."

You're not in a friendly battler party. If you come across 2 parties battling... your party is a 3rd party. Like if Russia & Europe had a fight and the US came along. We're 3 different countries.

Yeah, but, they're described as "friendly." The IMMEDIATE assumption is that they are allies, and not just a neutral third party. Perhaps when they appear in combat it should alert you - "You stumble upon a battle already in progress!"

I see your focus on the mistress. I will make it so you can give her jewelry. That's probably an overlook on my part. All classes should be able to use jewelry.

...

I think what I got from this review is >> Not uber mistress of my dreams. Rawr.

Not sure where you're getting that idea. My only complaint was that she couldn't wear jewelry (and I was half-joking, honestly; think about it. Giving jewelry to your Mistress...) and my other complaints were completely mechanics- and gameplay-based. Like never being told what a whip does. That's not a complaint that Mistress isn't uber, it's a complaint that I am not informed about the resources at my disposal.

But I'm thrilled that you're updating!

Oh yes lets name fire attack with something unorthodox and totally unlogical that it takes us hours to find out what the heck it is like "ardour onset insubstantial " and without reading the mindboggling description like "The ablaze rose sky fervents the flesh of thy person, your picking"we wouldnt know what the heck it is,but we will be original. I prefer practical over fancy, but ofcourse he could at least change the name...

What the fuck, who said this.

"I made a decision to do that/I did that on purpose" is not a valid response to an obviously disliked gameplay feature/quirk (or bug, as the case may be); that's simply dodging responsibility for poor design. It makes you look defensive and unable to take criticism - especially when the very first comment on a very comprehensive, well-written review of your game is basically to accuse the author of exaggerating everything and being completely wrong.
