RM* Ostagrams

If you're not familiar with Ostagram, you give it a base picture and a filter picture, and it redraws the base through the logic of the filter.

[RMVXA] ISO Yami's PTB Ace script

I'm sexually attracted to Guild Wars 2

http://www.destructoid.com/guild-wars-2-isn-t-like-any-mmo-you-ve-played-before-222175.phtml

I've been following the development of this game very closely, and it looks incredibly solid. The only thing I was iffy about was the "event" system in place of quests.

If you're not familiar, instead of NPCs standing around with a star or a ! over their heads, quests are triggered by interacting with your environment. The world has multiple event chains, none of which result in "failure," just a different loop of events/end to the quest (since lots of quests/events are interconnected in some way).

This article aroused me. I just wanted to share.

Script Calls and Base Stats in VX/ YEM

I'm trying to use script calls to modify the player's stats, like a reward during a cutscene. I figured I'd look at how items that add permanent stats do it, and use that as an example, but they just seem to add to the @stat_plus. I am thinking that another method actually recalculates and adds to the stats using these variables, but I can't track it down, if that is the case.

This is the example I'm looking at:

under default GAME_BATTLER (nothing I am using overwrites item_growth_effect)

#--------------------------------------------------------------------------
# * Item Growth Effect Application
# user : Item user
# item : item
#--------------------------------------------------------------------------

def item_growth_effect(user, item)
if item.parameter_type > 0 and item.parameter_points != 0
case item.parameter_type
when 1 # Maximum HP
@maxhp_plus += item.parameter_points
when 2 # Maximum MP
@maxmp_plus += item.parameter_points
when 3 # Attack
@atk_plus += item.parameter_points
when 4 # Defense
@def_plus += item.parameter_points
when 5 # Spirit
@spi_plus += item.parameter_points
when 6 # Agility
@agi_plus += item.parameter_points
end
end
end

I'm not really sure how to translate this into a sensible script call. D: Obviously I want to modify @STAT_plus variables, but I'm not sure how to determine which actor it is affecting without calling the item_growth_effect method itself and tying it to database items (clumsy workaround ew). Based on some existing scripts' examples, I also feel like the script call window in the eventing commands might have slightly different syntax than the normal script editor? I might just be imagining it, though.

Changing the Window skin in VX

Like with the last two help requests I posted, I will probably figure this out immediately after putting this up. :B

I replaced the Window file in my systems graphics, and reimported it into the game; however, my actual window skin hasn't changed! I replaced the default blue with red, but the windows are still blue. I'm using YEM, so maybe something in YEM is overriding me?

Open-ended dialog responses

Okay! I have a scenario to put forward, because I'm really curious about other players' reactions.

The game you're playing involves email as a major mechanic. You're actually able to open up the email screen and type whatever you want. This can range from receiving a fill-in-the-blank homework assignment from your teacher, to your friends trying to make plans with you. The emails you get from your friends (and probably other types of emails) contain obvious prompts to help you figure out what is an appropriate string. Example:

>From: A.Adaire
>Hey! Are you free on Monday or Tuesday? I want to go do a thing!

Any response containing "Monday" or "Tuesday" will work - short of checking for other strings like "yes" you could be a total jerk and respond:

>I hate you and seeing you on Monday would make me absolutely sick.
and she'll still say
>Awesome! Monday it is then!

(Note that you can turn her down but this sample string contains no negatives like "no" "busy" etc)

Conversation on this has been pretty split. The reaction at this point is pretty 50/50 amusement/bafflement. Amused: "Hahahaha, yesssss! I can say whatever I want, and be a total dick, and it doesn't impede my game!" / "Oh, that's cool! I can actually type a reply instead of clicking on/choosing premade fragments (like .hack//)."
Baffled: "Why can I just say slkfjdskjfhskjdfh Monday akjfhsjkfh and have it work? Why can I say nasty things and she'll still be okay with it? Or just reply with the word 'Monday'...?"

Well, honestly, if you just said "monday" that'd be a valid - if short - response to her question! And... that last response .. errr maybe you were just having a lot of trouble typing. But really, in the interest of keeping in-character, even though you have many different choices throughout the game to define what your exact character personality IS, would it be better to follow that format and give you prewritten responses to choose from and/or cobble together? At the very least, for replying to more open-format emails, and not for fill-in-the-blank quizzes.

Personally, I lean toward the open-format, because short of *actually going out of your way to say nasty things*, it works just fine. I was also leaning toward suggesting that a script should check for any number of defined obscenities and have people not like those responses (except for people who are also a*holes anyway :D) but that's really dependent on my sole opinion. I don't like suggesting changes to someone's actual *system* if I don't really feel they are ideal as opposed to personal preference. So what do you guys think? Pointing to .hack// as a system that used fragments to let you put responses together is a good reference, or any others I'm not familiar with...

Ignorant Hilarity from this morning

This was so outrageous/funny I had to share the absolute ridiculousness of the whole thing with you guys.

So I'm on the bus this morning, on my way to work. This black guy and his white girlfriend (important) were sitting in the back of the bus and he was at first just talking dumb shit: "A fool is a fool because of innocence, a fool isn't clever; you don't need to wrap truth in cleverness, you wrap your lies in cleverness. The devil is clever..." then he starts talking about how "Muslims are pushing the radical liberal agenda, and making you believe it's white politicians, and the feds are coming for you California! They're sick of your shit! Trying to make you believe a white person is pushing these beliefs... a white person would never hang out with a ni**er, a white person would never ally themselves with a ni**er" with his white girlfriend sitting right there! So clearly, he is insane.

Finally, the girl next to me said "Sir, you're an ignorant, racist asshole and listening to you has ruined my morning." She got up and moved away. THAT really set him off with the utmost of brilliant comebacks: "Oh yeah? Well you're FAT." They started 'arguing' (read: his response over and over was "you're fat, you're fat, why don't you manage your weight before you manage my beliefs? you're fat" because that is how you rationally pose a logical argument, amirite). Then he resorted to "You must be a homo." This turned several heads (we do live in San Francisco, sir) and got at least one "did you just use homo as a slur?"

"Yes I did. Because she probably is a homo! Homos are WEAK. They fail at everything, so they need laws to protect them! Homos are liars, they lie about everything! Homos are trying to bring you down! They're trying to stress you out!!"

His poor girlfriend kept saying "Let's just get off... let's just get off..." to his "NO, we're not!!!" so finally I spoke up. "This poor girl is trying to remove herself from this hostile situation... you're just trapping her." Woops, guess I should have kept to myself, because they BOTH flipped the eff out: "NO I'M NOT!" / "NO SHE'S NOT! You don't know women!! You don't know how women act! You're a fa**ot so you act like a woman, you don't know how women act!"

I turned to the people around me. "I act like a woman but... I don't know how women act... something about this seems... hmmm..." (cue mass snickering)

"It doesn't matter, it doesn't matter. God will cut your tongue out. That's why you're damned - you're damned to Hell. And you're not even handsome, you're not handsome! You're ugly! You don't get women, you don't get pu**y! You can't even buy nice shoes!"

(Guy next to me: "...I like your shoes...")

Now this one girl was desperately trying to ignore the hysterical screaming this had erupted into (from this insane man, not from me, although I wasn't the only one fighting back against him; we just weren't screaming like crazy assholes). However, he then took his insanity to a whole new level:
"Gay people are trying to keep me down. That's why you all organized this, to keep me down, but look how I handled it- *smugly* I'm still standing." Oh god, did that crack everybody up, including the poor girl trying so hard to ignore it. I told her "I think this is making my morning, rather than ruining it..." and she agreed.

I couldn't help it: I announced to the bus "It was so worth it to get up early and call you all this morning so we could make this happen, truly this is a landmark civil rights moment. Let's all take a moment to pat ourselves on the back." (cue more mass laughter at this idiot)

The rest of the bus ride was basically a tirade of "LAUGHTER is the first step to CRYING! When you see them laughing it's because they're hurting - they're crying on the inside. I'm making them cry." So they're going to get off and...

...Uh oh! The original pissed girl is still here, just moved up a bit. They start screaming in each others' faces but all I can hear is this idiot: "You don't agree with me so you must be a HOMO! You're a HOMO! You're a HOMO!"
"Yes sir, I am a HOMO SAPIENS, like everyone on this bus except for you."
"You're a HOMO!"
"If being a homo is bad, then I'm a homo- ENJOY IT, SIR!" and she slammed the bus door behind him.

Cue raucous applause from the entire bus.

Awesome GIrl: "I apologize for my behavior... and I need a fucking whiskey."

There were a lot more hilarious, snide comments passed between myself and several other passengers that I've probably forgotten, and although it was the most intense bus ride ever, it was still pretty amazing/hilarious.

RMVX: Can't import sprites

So I'm working on some character sprite graphics for RMVX. I've been making them in Paint.net and saving them as .png files, and up until just now, I could import and use them as charsprites just fine. However, for some reason, whenever I try to import them now it just goes straight into the resource folder - there is no popup option for me to pick transparencies - and when I try to use the file as a charsprite, it appears to be completely blank. That is, I can't even click to a select a portion of the image to use as a charsprite, as though there is no image.

I've tried saving multiple different copies, as well as saving it as a paint.net PDN file and then saving a new PNG from that. I can't figure out what changed about the image!

Edit: Derp I figured it out
For some reason it was still a .pdn file but appeared to be a .png
FIXED

RM2k3 Transparency Bug

... For some reason, every event on my map is transparent, whether or not the "transparent" box is checked. This includes the hero's sprite.

Rotating Menu Ring

Hey guys. Looking into an icon system like SD3 or Secret of Mana's "menu ring." Can anybody link me to some material (or give a synopsis) of how it can be done smoothly in RM2k3? Google-fu has failed me.
