WOLFE'S PROFILE

My specialty is music composition, but I also have a little background in programming and some experience with pixel art. After a recent breakthrough on an RPG Maker 2000 project I've been working on, I'm well on my way to launching a game page and starting to piece things together!

Naturally, it will have a completely unique soundtrack. The theme of the game is still under wraps, but I promise it won't be something you've seen before...

I just posted my first tutorial, based on a discovery I made while making my game. I'm starting to get comfortable here, so you can expect to see more submissions from me in the future.

Mini Music Challenge

I appreciate the deadline extension, kentona. I just happened to discover the contest yesterday! I don't know what the original deadline was but I submitted my song last night.

I guess I have a knack for that -- for the Music Challenge in January, I found out about the contest and jumped in within a day of the first deadline, haha.

Music Challenge - Phase 3 Results

Entry 5 for me. The sad intro is a nice touch, and it manages to switch upbeat without sacrificing emotion.

The RPG Music Challenge - Phase 2 results

Entry 13 for me. Right sound, right feeling, nothing to fix that I can tell.

The RPG Music Challenge - Phase 1 Results!

Interpretations of the theme varied quite a bit among both composers and voters. That makes the top-ranked entries all the more impressive, but as it was said before, there's a lot of great stuff here.

The next theme will probably be open to even more interpretation, so there's no telling how it will turn out.

The RPG Music Challenge

I was wondering who I was expected to be.

I really enjoy writing chiptune music, but part of it is my macbook has crap for MIDI sounds -- I'll have to retrieve my desktop to record my Phase 2 entry. I have a song idea swimming around in my head now.

Congrats to anybody who actually GOT a vote!

Yeah, there were a lot of entries. I'm happy I got a mention in many of the replies. :)

Standout entries for me:
Entry #5 -- Melodic and fit the theme, but lacking a "hook"; also the drum line was unnecessarily repetitive. I like it though.
Entry #11 -- One of the highest quality entries for sure, but more "jungle caveman" than lava.
Entry #12 -- I really dig that bass line, but the rest of the song is kinda messy (and more than three instruments I think).
Entry #20 -- One of the better pieces, but unfortunately it's pretty far from "lava", IMO. Either an ice palace or a burnt-out ashy wasteland.
Entry #21 -- I like it! Fits the theme, and it's a great relaxed, inoffensive BGM for tinkering in the menu mid-dungeon. I can visualize slow lava flows.
Entry #31 -- I had to highlight this one for its unique sound. I like the brushed snare, but it sounds more like a reimagining of the floating castle from FF1 than a lava palace.
Entry #32 -- One of the strongest musically, but it just doesn't fit the theme as well as #21. Great piece.
Entry #33 -- Interesting combination of sounds.

Several others fit the "lava" aesthetic well, but lacked a solid musical theme, in my opinion.

My vote: Entry #21 for sure!

The RPG Music Challenge

I didn't really mean "upbeat and happy," but I don't think it should sound like the time your dog died, your wife left you, your horse ran away, and you tripped and fell in the mud and everybody laughed at you. Not that I was expecting any country music entries...

For "wistful, sentimental yearning," Tifa's theme is actually a pretty good example. Contrast that with "Forever Rachel" or "Daryl's Epitaph" from FFVI.

Didn't mean to make things difficult, I was just saying that you wouldn't have nostalgia for a depressing life event.

I started my entry and I'm thinking that there are going to be A LOT of Final Fantasy VI/VII rip-offs in this round.
Remember that the theme is about happy memories. FFVI doesn't have a whole lot of those. Mostly two dead girlfriends, a dead father, a deranged father, manipulation and a tragic relationship, and suicidal despair. :P

Okay, the last one isn't really a memory, but it was one of the "sad" versions of a character leitmotif.

To be honest I only played through FFVII once and I can't recall what "happy memory" songs it had, other than Tifa's theme at the beginning. It's been over 14 years now. (did I just make anyone feel old?)

I'm going to give each song a fair listen before voting/commenting, but I've already tried a few. We've got some great entries here. Lots to pick from. :)
