BLACKDRAGON84'S PROFILE

Born in the era of the NES I have been a gamer for the past 20 years. and having been on the consumer side of gaming i have always wondered what the development side is like. I have played around with maker titles in the past (rpg maker on psx and fighter maker on ps2) and have been tinkering with rpg maker vx ace on steam for about a month. as far as what kind of rpg i want to make i take HEAVY inspiration from Final Fantasy VI (the best game in the series in my opinion) chrono trigger, breath of fire and other rpg titles of the 90's. I particularly like Final Fantasy VI because of what they did with the limited capabilities of the SNES. to this day i still care more about the 16bit sprite characters in that game then the fully blown 3D rendered characters of current games. I hope that i can learn a thing or two about game development here have fun doing it and make new friends.

showing my art

Just wanted to show some of the art i have done. and where i will be posting future art so as to keep track of everything and have it all in one place.

http://blackdragon1984.deviantart.com/

it doesn't have much on it but i put things on it when i feel like sharing. figured i would put it here so people can see my RPG maker stuff and let me know what they think. for a while i have been using renders and brushes to make art. (the face i have uploaded was created with a pre made face generator file that i got for gimp.

here's a link to it for anyone wanting to give it a try. it's works really good.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SY7l9w9HmDk

it says it's for Photoshop but i have not had any issue using it in gimp. all the parts are setup as layers. and the YouTube vid is a tutorial on how to use it.

one last thing if this is in the wrong part then please move it. i didn't know where exactly to put this.

[Request][Tileset] Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald

Wish Granted!

http://fanart.pokefans.net/tilesets/9665

not sure if everything is there but the tileset is pretty big. just remember to save it as a .png and correctly name it so RPG maker recognizes it as a tileset and you should be good (might need a bit of editing since it also has the people sprites in it as well.) don't forget to credit the person who put the tileset up.

two graphics related questions

two graphics related questions

yes i was referring to the SNES version of the graphics. I wasn't aware that the RTP characters had emotion sprites. I will certainly take a look at those. the chibi like default characters are great but i didn't think they where detailed enough to show emotions.

what i might do is make the a bare-bones structure game with nothing but the RTP stuff. and then pick it apart and replace what i remove with non RTP stuff. that way i can have something to show when asking questions about development.

thanks Liberty for the information. btw i might use some of your graphic resources. if i do i will let you know. i have a few pieces of your work filed under your name. (i have put downloaded resources in a file system organized by creator so i can keep track of who to credit)

two graphics related questions

I have been working on my first game using rpg maker vx ace on steam. and i have a rogue basic idea for what i want the game to be. but i have two questions and both are related to graphics. i hope to get a artists/sprites reply on this.

1. what style are the battlers/monsters/bosses made in for games like FF4/5/6? are they hand pixled? are they line drawn then sprited?

2. making sprites that can show emotions (again like FF4/5/6) since i like the way the characters showed there emotions like laughter, sorrow, anger, etc. can these emotion sprites be used in rpg maker vx ace?

if you need examples of what i am talking about let me know.

Final Fantasy 6 Remake!

Did somebody ask for FF6 style sprites? Well here you go!
im late but, i like how this video is better than the 3 games combined. better writing, gameplay, music, graphics etc.

at least if we got the game shown in that video I would of enjoyed it more (even if it still had the same retarded story as what we actually got.)

they need to get Daisuke Watanabe away from the final fantasy series and have Hironobu Sakaguchi and Yoshinori Kitase (the writers for FF6) make the story. that would be a start anyway. i mean Daisuke Watanabe's emo drama works fine with the kingdom hearts series because that's what those games are about. but it's killing the final fantasy series. and FIRE the bonehead who decided that the popular and fully functioning ATB combat system they have been polishing for years was no good and decided to make it to where the game play's itself while giving the player a big middle finger.

Why is RPG Maker stuck in the 20th Century, graphics-wise?

oh my apologies didn't mean to necro. just seen a topic that i had a interest in. I will try to keep dates of topics in mind next time.

Why is RPG Maker stuck in the 20th Century, graphics-wise?

I agree that learning new skills never hurt anyone. that said i think that the maker series is more aimed at newbies to game development a sort of kiddie pool for them to splash around in before stepping up to the Olympic sized pool that is the current game development scene.

not to forget that the bigger/more flashy a game is the more effort/time/money has to go into it. like others have said game dev budgets are rather out of control (much like the time it takes to make a game these days) but it's only because gamers keep demanding more and more realistic games. which always makes me laugh since the point of a game is to get people away from reality.

this is also why indie games for the most part use older graphics and gameplay styles. it's easier to do on a smaller scale. just look at games like super meat boy. not saying all indie games are 2D based (just look at how minecraft started) but a majority of them are because it's easier for all involved.

Final Fantasy 6 Remake!

Being a HUGE fan of the final fantasy games (well until the steaming turd that is Final fantasy 11. and every game since has just been making that same smelly load bigger and bigger so now it's a mountain of shit) I have to say final fantasy 6 is my favorite out of the series. not saying the game isn't without it's issues ( Vanish+doom=one hit KO) but it's still one of my top ten favorite snes rpg games. and i happen to like the graphics style so much so that i have been looking for a way to use it in rpg maker vx ace. a story where the bad guy actually wins is a rare occurrence (kefka gaining the powers of the warring triad and using there light of judgement to burn the world=*epic kefka laugh*) to me every aspect of this game is golden. and it's sad that squire has decided to throw this style of development out the window and replace it with the (again in my opinion) garbage that they pass off as a "final fantasy" game these days.

squire you're breaking my heart! You're going down a path I cannot follow!

Prepare to die!

...sorry.

Welcome to RMN! I was classically trained as well, on the NES.

Dang, I wanted to say it.
Speaking of Princess Bride I wish they made movies like that again and I don't mean remakes we have way too many remakes these days. I'm just saying I wish there were more new movies that had the same kind of spirit that this film had. Although, my favorite 80's film is the Neverending Story.

same here those movies where the best. i would blame the CGI boom but that would not be fair since there are good movies with CGI use. so i simply blame the greedy mindset of (will it sell>is it good) and I also agree WAY too many remakes and very few of them worth the brainfart used as the idea to make them.
