Shinan's 'What the hell' 3 day gamemaking contest!

Here's my entry http://rpgmaker.net/media/content/users/3654/locker/One_Room.exe (link works now, thanks geodude!)
It's probably a piece of shit, but at least it's done xD

this is amazing jesus christ.

The Astonishing Captain Skull Review

Thanks for the review! There are at least two other AGS guys on the site though (Shinan and Merte). Vermillo was actually a character in my first AGS game (not on this site) which I put in because I didn't feel like making another character graphic. It was much more cartoonish than this game, which was kind of intended to be like early Doctor Who episodes and sci-fi movies about paranoid scientists in tinfoil rooms, so his personality stands out more! The Doctor Who thing also accounts for Quimby who is basically K-9 except instead of a prissy english dog it's a dinosaur thing that roars incoherently at everything.

Shinan's 'What the hell' 3 day gamemaking contest!

Here's my entry http://rpgmaker.net/users/catmitts/locker/The_Room_XKVD_Hi_Quality_DVDRip.rar it's really bad!! I'm not being cute or selfdeprecating it's probably the worst thing I've made. It's basically a Phillip K. Dick / Adolfo Bioy Casares ripoff except really stilted and badly-written and horrible aaa. Anyway it's uh definitely a spur of the moment oneroom contest game yup.

Anyone up for a quickie contest?

Take an old project of yours, completed or not completed, and update it to make it more accessible to the RMN community.

Shinan's 'What the hell' 3 day gamemaking contest!

I might try this *slowly pulls on mint-condition NES Power Glove w/ letters G.A.M.E.S attached on knuckles* but uh bearing in mind it takes like a day to get a gamepage approved and another day to get a download approved it's probably better if everyone just uses mediafire or something.

I have downloaded the RTP multiple times and still most 2k3 games don't run because of "system 2c not found" for whatever reason and I want to play this so I'll beta if you want.

Thanks dude, I'll send you a PM with the game once I finish it!

Five Strategies for Better Game-Making

I agree with all this but especially #1. The only generic RM2k3 game I actually enjoyed playing and found memorable was one called I think Love And War. It was all RTP iirc and there was nothing groundbreaking in terms of writing or design or whatever but the creator had an obvious affection for the game and the characters in it which I found charming. One of the things that popped out at me from watching those Let's Try videos is how bombastic some of the games were. They'd hit you over the head with dramatic cutscenes and mountain fights and portentious text and I guess hope you were impressed enough to follow up on it. I think trying to charm the player is much more effective than trying to awe them (and easier, for amateur game designers working with ripped materials etc). I realise that talking about the importance of charm makes me sound like an aging gigolo but you know what I mean.

I think the second one is important mainly because of the RPG Maker message box system. Like uh movies and comics and books and so on can get away with more "fluff"/mood-setting/digressive stuff because I think they have a lot more room to differentiate between the digressive conversations and the important ones. In RM games all the information, important or not, is given the same way through little default text boxes and sprite things walking around. The example I'm thinking of is that Let's Try game with the uh scientists in the lab going
"Press button"
"button pressed"
"increase leg pump x200"
"pump imcreased"
etc. which in a movie or something could just be background noise to show these guys mean business but in a game means clicking through a stack of boxes with absolutely no actual information. So I guess it does demand brevity in a way.

Actually it's more this:

Marc Bolan is basically an anime anyway so I wrote him in as a miniboss. However he may have a dark secret.......... what is the secret of the "rip off"........

What are you thinking about right now?

The Problem with Reviews (and a new suggestion!)

I guess I like the impressions idea since it might make people more likely to say what they thought of a game without feeling the need for it to be exhaustive gameplay/music/chipset analysis. I don't care about the ratings and I get annoyed by like/dislike things with no justification involved. I would honestly either get no feedback at all or get a stack of onestar reviews than have to decipher some worthless and arbitrary THUMB UP / THUMB DOWN measurement with no comments attached, and I kind of feel this way about subscriber/download count too. It honestly seems pretty obnoxious to me that someone would just give a score without deigning to explain why! If you don't want to talk about it then don't talk about it.

Basically idk about getting more reviews or whatever but numerical measurements are always stupid and arbitrary at the best of times and I don't know why you'd want to play up their stupidity and arbitrariness while minimising what little level of accountability they ever had. Not saying that's what you're doing I am just a post *plucks guitar*.
