The myth of games as escapism
author=Sagitarok, fine, they were inspired by some sound effects and a plot too. none of this has anything to do with game mechanics. you know, the interactive part.
Take the Gerudo Valley theme from Zelda:OoT. If that song had simply come up on the radio, no one would have cared enough to make a remix of it. But taken in context of this grand adventure, with the blowing sands and badass desert thieves, that's where the inspiration came from. There are dozens of remixes of that melody out there, including some that incorporate sound effects from the game and some that feature original lyrics based on the game's story. Those remixers were inspired by the whole package, not just one individual element of the game.

I find it ludicrous that there's some magical moment where my environments cease to be art just because they're put into an interactive medium.
if you want to claim that games are a new interactive frontier of art, or whatever, at least claim that the interactive parts are the art.
The myth of games as escapism
author=Sagitarnone of those words imply anything about the game feeling "like work" though
I felt tension, fear, stress, my heart rate quickened noticeably... You call that "poor game design" because it wasn't simple amusement? I'd say the opposite.
oh and this is just a thing re: your previous post, i think it's more valid to say that OCRemix's compositions were inspired by music, not games

First, here's the definition of "escapism" as given by Webster:
: habitual diversion of the mind to purely imaginative activity or entertainment as an escape from reality or routine.
and here's the definition for "game" as given by Webster:
: activity engaged in for diversion or amusement.
1. escapism is implicit. if escapism is habitual diversion, and you play games habitually, that's escapism.
2. games are for amusement. if a game "feels like work," that's poor game design.
p.s. games aren't art

Five Strategies for Better Game-Making
xenogears, the only game to feature a character annoying enough to make me stop playing it outright

But I personally thought stopping Sephiroth's plot to genocide the planet was a lot less compelling than the party's conflict with Shinra earlier in the game.

Why Plagiarism Matters
comment=39173parody? bub i am 110% seriouscomment=39134Remember that parody is part of the fair use. In fact you can even sell the parody. (though maybe if it wasn't we wouldn't get those godawful "**** Movies")
so here's my game idea: it's called Sovereign Spleens, and there's this kid Sky, and he has to go around and look for his friends Land and Sea, but he discovers this ancient power called the Sovereign Spleens, and he has to save a bunch of Hanna-Barbera characters from otherworldly trouble with his Lockpickblade, and some Wild Arms characters even help him!
what do you guys think? pretty sick huh?
(I decided about halfway through there that I didn't care enough to arrange my thoughts in a way that could make a point and just rolled with it. Though I may as well point out that my stance on the whole thing is that anything short of straight-up, legitimate plagiarism doesn't really bother me at all. Also I forget who said that people need to learn to cite their sources but I agree with them. Also yes please let's eradicate parody from fair use because I don't think it's ever going to give us anything good ever again unfortunately.)
