What annoys you in a game?

-Bad plots. I find the stories in RPGs to be some of the most enjoyable parts, and if the story disinterests me, I just stop playing.

-Long/Repetetive Dungeons Rogue Galaxy was notorious for doing this. The dungeons were way too long and didn't have that much variety in them. I found myself asking "Am I making any progress yet, 'cause everything looks the same" a lot.

-Unbalanced Characters It drives me nuts when no matter how high a level you reach, one character is still useless compared to the others (or vice versa). You gave me the choice of 8 characters, now make me actually want to have the others in the party!

-Trading Sidequests I'm not saying these are really bad, but it can get a little ridiculous sometimes. "Oh, thank you for the knife. Here take this letter." "Oh, thank you for the letter. Here take this box." It takes too long and sometimes the reward's not even worth it.

-Lack of Explanations I'm not asking for a bunch of tutorials, but don't just leave me in the dark about things, it irritates me. For example, Star Ocean 2 (one of my favorite games) had no real explanation about item creation. They just left you to figure it out. (Press triangle at the item screen? Why the **** didn't you tell me that?!)

And yes, cutscene paralysis is a little irritating.

Naming your characters

Yeah, names based on what a character's occupation is are a little too on-the-nose.

It's not like I always use occupations, that example was just from when I couldn't think of anything else (and the only one I could remember off the top of my head). And when I use synonyms as a naming method, I tend to change the word enough that it's not completely obvious where they come from. I just use it as something to spark some ideas.

It could have been worse, though. One character my friend came up with was a vampire-looking guy (a la Vincent Valentine) whose name was Vamp (no, I'm not kidding). All I could do was give him the "Are you serious?" look.

Naming your characters

Some of my favorite naming methods:

Changing existing names
Simple enough, I just change and/or add a letter or two to a name that I've heard. Example: I added an L to the name Gau (from FFVI) and got the name of a character, "Gaul". In another story, I named one of my characters who had prophetic visions Damus (from Nostradamus).

Using Synonyms
One of my most used methods. I'll take a trait from a character ("Assassin" for example) and look up synonyms for it. That's how I tend to get a lot of my last names ("Gaul Apache" was what came out of this example).

When all else fails, use a nice sounding name
Sometimes I'll just pick a common name that sounds like it matches the character's personality (and preferably rolls off the tongue). For example, I named a stuck-up, preppy mage Louise because it just sounded like it fit.

Giving Bosses More HP

On a side note, giving Bosses lots of HP doesn't make them harder/ better/ more fun. It just drags on forever.

Well, this boss was going to be for a secret dungeon and by that point I would expect that the main characters will be hitting for probably a few thousand damage. So in order to make the fight not pitifully short, I would increase the boss's HP.

I agree with LWG! Just giving a boss tons of health won't make him stronger. It's likely to make the player less interested in the fight.

It's not like I was planning to make the fight last an hour. I just wanted to make a boss that could give a higher leveled party a run for their money. I considered just raising his defense a lot, but if you were attacking something and only did 100 damage when you can usually deal 3000 to a regular enemy, you would feel that the fight was going nowhere fast and lose interest. So I decided to keep his defense reasonable while increasing his HP to a point where the fight won't be over in only a few turns.

Giving Bosses More HP

Me and my friends are starting to develop our own game using RMXP. It's still in the early planning stages, but in the meantime I figured I'd practice messing around in XP. I've managed to get a working airship, so I tried making a practice "super boss".

However, RPG Maker XP won't let me give it any more than 9999 HP. I wanted it to have more. Is there any way I could change the maximum HP limit?

Edit: Whoops, never mind. I was looking at SP and not HP.
