Well Id ont really know much about the formats for XP. But one thing I will suggest is checking that your sound card has not got the option "midi" muted. Have you got a sound card or is it on board? Also, can you play the songs outside of the RPG Maker using media player or whatnot?

I love cherry's patches. If it wasn't for him, my games would be 10x harder to create. You seen his RPG Maker 2009?
It's not really that different but he has coded an engine for it. You can change the font of RPG maker so it looks nicer to read n stuff. Take a look.

You cannot do this in Paint and I'm not sure about gimp as i have never used it. Just for a laugh you should know that in England (where I'm from), the word gimp is an insult and means that you are stupid xD

the best tool ever for RM2k/3 character editing is Adobe Photoshop and/or iDraw.
In iDraw the first colour on the platelet is the transparency colour. So if any pixels you need use are this colour then you need to use a different box on the platelet.
That is the simplest tool to use for what you are trying to do. Google iDraw RM2k and im sure its on crankeye.com
