It sounds like the story is only meant to drive the necessity of your gameplay. If that's the case, and you don't want to have a story similar to SotC, then consider using someone else's idea for a story (so that you can focus on making the game fun).
This is what my idea for the game is, So i'm thinking of changing the storyline to beating the monsters for the power they hold. The main reason I really wanted to make this game is for the actual battles. Because it would only be boss battles and there is only about nine, this drives me to make the most challenging and spectacular battle I can.

Five Minute Evaluation
I'm taking request from people who would like their games to be evaluated. This mean I would play and review your game, not just leave you a comment. But the game can't be very long. This is because I have just started a job and have loads of homework for finals, so this means I don't want to get deep into working on a game, but want something for my downtime. So if you have a game that isn't to long and want it to get a review, Let me know here.

ok, basic storyline. you and your mate/partner and travlers and have travled from land to land in search of a better study of the world. When you enter this new land your partner falls ill and soon passes away. In mourning you pray at a near-by church when a half crazy preist offers his guidness. the preist poses you go and defeat nine beast of power around the land, and once defeated you use their combined power to bring back your partner.
Game play is mostly walking and then battle. to grow stronger you by new weapons or scrolls. to pay for these you can do verious quest for people of the land. there are four classes, the Warrior, the Archer, the Mage, and the Skillist. the first three are simple but the skillist is my favorite, he has average skills but can use any skill if he has the card for it. plus your not stuck as one class, so you can do what you need to do defeat the bosses
