Description

Isrieri's castle compilation in SMBX!

In anticipation of Super RMN World, I'm taking it upon myself to issue a call to all potential SMBX devs! Even if you've never touched the engine, now's the time to give it a shot!

~ The Rundown ~
There is no maximum number of participants: Anyone can join, even those who've had no experience with the SMBX engine. Consider this getting your foot in the door.

~ Projected Timeline ~
Sign-ups: 01/01/12 ~ 01/6/13
Development: 01/06/13 ~ 01/27/13
Judging & Compilation: 01/29/13 ~ 01/31/13
Release: 02/01/13

That's all tentative. I am the worst procrastinator.

~ Submission Prerequisites ~
  • Make all levels in SMBX. (This is critical, people!)
  • All levels should be compressed in ZIP folders. When saving your level, always put your name followed by the name of the level. For example: “yourname_levelname.lvl”
  • Rate each submission on a scale of 1 to 5. Here are some vague words attempting to define each difficulty.

  • 1) Mild
  • 2) Tricky
  • 3) Challenging
  • 4) Tough
  • 5) Endgame

  • You must include one (and only one!) SMW Checkpoint within each level, as this is all SMBX will support.
  • The level must end with a ? Sphere.
  • Place both the Player 1 and Player 2 start locations.
  • If you include a boss, you may use any but Mother Brain. But I encourage putting your focus into the actual level.
  • No midbosses though.
  • You must be able to clear the level without taking a hit.

~ Level Rules ~
  • Castles are supposed to be challenging. That doesn't necessarily mean difficult. Try and stay within the precedent set in previous Mario games. The purpose of this project is to get the hang of challenging the player without frustrating them.
  • We're going for quality over quantity here, so you may submit up to 3 levels total.
  • You are not limited to staying within any of the “styles” the castles previous Mario games adhered to. Use them as guidelines, but don't be afraid to innovate. Have fun with it!
  • You may use custom graphics and MP3s if you wish.
  • The game will only utilize Mario and Luigi as characters, so don't make Peach or Toad levels.
  • All water must be swimmable. Waterfalls must not be.
  • An average castle should take no longer than 2 to 4 minutes to complete. (And no shorter than 1 minute)
  • This will be a strictly one player game. You don't have to design your castle to support co-op.
  • No secret stars.
  • No dialogue! That means no message blocks, signs, or talking npcs!
  • You must have at least one power
  • up. Remember that the amount of power-ups and how you place them contributes greatly to the difficulty of a level.
  • Use invisible blocks wisely. No putting them over pits or other nonsense of that sort.

~ Important Note ~
Remember that this is open to anyone who wishes to explore SMBX as an engine: I'd like to see a lot of new faces for the next RMN Bros! There's a lot of quirks to the editor that I neglected to explain, and so you'll probably have lots of questions. I refer you to these tutorials, but don't hesitate to post your question here. I don't know everything about SMBX, but I'll likely have the answers to any the questions you'll want to ask.

In the holy name of makerscore, I object!

Is Solitayre even capable of making a difficult SMBX level?

I always thought his level were moderately challenging. Not like I'm any better at making hard levels, though. xD

-But I'm iffy with the donut blocks on the conveyer belt. The player may not jump on 'em or fail to realize their purpose. So if the boss turns around, you have to wait forever as he goes against the current of the belt. I'd just get rid of them, as I think it would be more exciting that way.

-I'm also don't know why the player has to be the one to fall down the pit to escape the boss. It adds a bit of needless walking. I would just have the boss die by falling into the pit down below. And then the player can walk right out to the exit. But since I have no clue how the boss dies when you fall into the pit, maybe it's more trouble than it's worth? I just don't like the idea of the boss dying offscreen for mysterious reasons: It takes you out of the action.

-I'll get rid of 'em
-I believe you can get rid of the boss in 3 ways. You can use the stone bricks to climb up (I added this if someone doesn't know how the purple Yoshi works.) Is it necessary? Anyways you can also make a hole in the yellow blocks without falling in yourself(as Super Mario or with purple Yoshi) or you can fall in yourself and use the additional route to save yourself from the pit. (even if the "boss" follows you in the pit)
Oh and the way the Boss dies is a quirk in SMBX and sticking to layers. When the red skelly is off-screen and tries to update. (hitting a wall to turn around, a cliff to fall or etc.) The enemy and the wall to my knowledge resets to their original positions. Causing this off-screen death. I can't really fix this without taking out the 2 ways this is noticeable in. The stone bricks and the floor in the bottom.

Oh. and I'll also take a look at that brown block thing.

Hopefully final version of DDD. Meteor fort stayed the same.
I'm still in the orange... What now?
Solitayre
Circumstance penalty for being the bard.

Fixed up the temple.

-Fixed issue with Birdo's egg. (I think.)
-Made the second section more harrowing.
-Added more spider thwomps.
-Generally made it harder because screw kentona (<3 kentona)

I'd say it's probably a 3/5 difficulty now.
Seiromem
I would have more makerscore If I did things.

Can I has fourth entry?

Solitayre, we bring out the best in each other (when making SMBX levels)

Ok, I played it, and I like it. One thing I would change is moving the spider thwomp over one tile at the exit of the water section - it is really hard to jump out of the water as small mario in SMBX and still have enough time to dodge the thwomp without getting hit.

@Solitayre: The ante has been sufficiently upped. I actually really liked that spider thwomp's placement, but that's because I had absolutely no trouble with it. I'd follow Kentona's advice and move it a block or two to give the player a foothold to stand at. Birdo's a bit boring I guess, but no one else has used him her it, so its fine. I think this is all set otherwise. I'm leaving the level Pending for now if you want to make any other changes you can think of, but consider yourself Approved.

I still think it's a 1. This level is perfect for the beginning of the game.

@jackalotrun: You forgot a few things like moving the checkpoint back to start, and the blocks at the top I told you to add holes to. But otherwise I don't have any complaints. I'll set your level to APPROVED and just take care of that top area myself when I get all the levels in one place. No big deal.

@Blobofgoo: That's not what I meant when I said to add coin blocks! I meant inside the bridge. Because of all the explosions, having a few coins in some blocks makes it possible for the player to keep on hopping to the right and keep them from getting stuck. But don't sweat it: I think the level's good otherwise, I'll fix that up for you in compilation.

@Apa: No rush on your end. Take your time to make your level as good as you can. Just post a comment and tell me when you've got the update ready.

You might need to test out the coin blocks. I thought that they would explode anyway...

I just changed the deadline to the 31st so people can get their revisions in.

Updated my level again, moved the Suu and added one more evil trick to make the vine swinging section a little more interesting.

I would have done a better boss than Birdo but you didn't want crazy bosses in this contest, so I just picked one of the lesser used bosses.

You should use tryclyde from smb2...
@Isrieri
I'll put this quite simple:
YEAH!

Oh and I'm sorry but... Me? Patience? Good god, I wish.

I don't know who that is! Also, is there a graphic for this creature?
I was never able to mimic tryclyde accurately in SMBX. I tried, though.
Oh no! I'm the only Orange one in the whole page... NOOO!!
Thankfully I've reached exam week and I have this day's test all done so I'm free for this and the next day and my level should be good to go soon. Still not sure what to do with the bridge though. Decisions decisions.

I'm sure Isrieri said "consider it accepted"
