Description

We've had a few game dev events in a row now with several more on the way later in the year, so let's take a little break with something a bit more chill!

The aim is to make a short, playable experience with up to 5 maps, taking place in any type of interior area (Cafes, aquariums, schools, museums, etc). Submissions must be more of an interactive exploration sim than a game.

If you need an example for this type of game, check out Apartment Simulator on the site, it won't take any longer than 5 minutes of your time.

RULES
- Max 5 maps. Max map size 50x50 each. No minimum size.
- No gameplay (cutscenes, battles, endings, puzzles, etc) but small interactions are okay.
- Your maps must all be indoor areas.
- You do not need game pages for this event.
- No minimum playtime required.
- Your entry must be made entirely within the event's timeframe.
- Any engine, any resources. If your engine isn’t tile based, or you’re making a 3D entry, take the 50x50 map size limit as an approximate guideline. I’ll be lenient as long as what you make is within reason.
- This is a solo event, and teams are not allowed.

REWARDS
  • Somewhere Nice - 40MS
Submit an entry to the event.

  • Guest Rooms - 20MS
Play and provide feedback on other entries during or after the event.

Playing through the entries that have been submitted so far, here's my feedback for them!

lav's "A Nice House"
This is really cute! The interactions are endearing and the custom graphics look great. The mapping could be touched up here and there, but it's mostly pretty minor stuff. The only thing that really stuck out to me is that maybe the first floor has a few too many windows and empty space in the kitchen. Otherwise, this fits the event really well. Nicely done :)

Soul's "Train Sim"
Some cool ideas here, but a little underwhelming. The mapping would be the main area for improvement - the scrolling backgrounds are a great touch but otherwise it doesn't feel too much like a train. There could have been a lot more included to make the map feel more alive, like exit doors, luggage holds, advertisement posters, maybe some seats with tables, etc. A bit strange not having any visible control panels in the conductor room aswell. Still, good effort on things like the announcement board (I honestly have no idea how you've pulled it off, it's pretty impressive). I know you could do better, it just needed a bit more of a push.

Marrend's "Derram Station"
Great submission! The mapping is pretty solid and the interactions are enjoyable. Especially the bar drinks - this was an amazing idea, I had a blast going through every single one. Using indicators for what you could interact with was a nice touch too. The main area for improvement I can think of would be the outside of the ship. Rather than just looking out into space, it would've been cool to perhaps see some jets or engines.

CrazyBabi's "Cozy Place"
I really like this one, despite being spooky it does actually have kind of a cozy vibe in the same way as something like liminal spaces. I think the lack of music was a good choice and actually allowed the sound effects to shine in its place. I also like that there's implications of a story here, it had me intrigued to keep exploring. The custom graphics look really nice. If I am to criticize anything, I would say I wish it had a few more interactions, and also that more sources of light would have been nice, but those are quite minor things. This is a great submission none the less.

Aquatorrent's "House Map"
Nice map, good use of space and interesting layout. Some interactions would've been cool but I had a good time walking around regardless. It's a bit strange that the credits are on the bed instead of the notepad next to it, though.

Ulevo's "Checkar Building"
Yet another really good entry! The mapping and visuals look great. The sound design creates a nice atmosphere, and the lack of people gives it kind of a creepy-comforting Yume Nikki-ish vibe for me. You can keep opening the safe to get more and more money but I'm guessing that was probably intentional.

Winter's Night is taking a while to download on my crappy internet and I've really gotta be off to sleep, so I'll get to it tomorrow with anything else that ends up getting submitted. Nicely done so far, everyone, some great results came out of this and I hope the event provided some good practice for you all!
Alright, so I just submitted mine! <3 I would love to check out the other entries now :D

Frogge:

Thanks for checking things out, and going through the drink menu. That event, and the news items, were probably my favorite interactions to make.

I'll admit, having ships passing by in the background would be a pretty neat idea, if I had the time/inclination to make such graphics.

*Edit: I might start going through these entries, to formulate snide commentary myself, but, I might also have to sit on it until after the event's closure.

Gave a 24 hour extension totally not because I need it for mine or anything so the event ends on a sunday instead. Good chance for anyone who wants to polish up their entry further or add anything.

thanks for the feedback! to be honest, i didn't know that you can do interactions for the event. i thought it was just plain maps (i just put the credits there as an easter egg or something). initially, there wasn't any notepad in the map so i made it on the bed, and the thought was kinda lost to me after i put the notepad there.

anyway, i just moved the credits to the notepad and added some interactions in the map. again, thanks for the feedback!

That's Frogge's fault. I actually removed interactions from my game because the rules specified you could only have minor ones.

Damn if only you'd played the example game I linked on the event page that I mentioned wouldn't take longer than a few minutes :P
Mine is in now! It was quite fun to leave coding for a while and enjoy map making. But of course I choose to do something I never done before: have a character much smaller than human explore an area... which of course implies tweaking the rendering order to run below furniture. There is only one map and no end-condition so enjoy running around and Alt-F4 when you're done.

I did play it! It only reinforced my concern!
pianotm - Cozy Places kMztJrt
Very cozy rooms with a lot of RMN characters to interact with. It runs great in EasyRPG but the Catte and Doggo sprites are missing. I was able to walk on water if I don't take the boat. Some transition successions between the rooms are geometrically incorrect. The bowling is really cool and the music is relaxing too.

Ulevo - Checkar Building
Instant EarthBound vibes! Your building looks clean and well organized. Each room has a distinct purpose or theme. The whole place is easy to navigate. It runs great in EasyRPG. I hear sounds effects but no music. Pressing Esc allows free saves ;-)

Thank you!
Yes. It's a spa. You're supposed to be able to through the water freely. Originally, you were supposed to have to take the boat to get to the next room, but I changed it because I worried Frogge might count it as gameplay.
Okay, so I played some of the entries:

Marrend's Derram Station:
I love the sci-fi setting and the interactions with the people, very nice exploration with glowing indicators for interactable objects.

Scourge's Winter's Night:
Very nice cozy warm INN. I love talking to the people and it really captured a sense of being warm inside an INN for a cold winter night.

CrazyBabi Cozy Place:
Really creepy and I get the feeling it can be a full horror game. The lighting does strangely make the place kinda cozy. Love the sprites and tiles.

I'll try getting into more of the entries later on. :D
Scourge
I used to make games. I still do, but I used to too.

I downloaded Checkar Building and the Egyptian Castle to start and uh Checkar building is missing that vehicles file so

I enjoyed Egyptian Castle! The "protagonist" had much more of a personality, which was fun. The Egyptian feel was nice as well, including the atmosphere from the music. I wish I'd been able to interact with a few more items, but it was fun to explore.
Thanks so much for trying the Egyptian castle, Scourge! Glad you enjoyed it! ^^

Now for more entries I played:

pianotm's Cozy Places:

I love the classic rm2k3 style and enjoyed the bowling animations. The people based on community members were very fun. I also like the boat in the spy that leads to the karate room. Tho I get an error when I go to the casino via the northern way from the starting map that says "Event placed invalid" or something.

aquatorrent's housemap:

RMXP tiles always have my heart. I love the cute little house. It could use some interactions, but it's a nice and cute nostalgic map.

Soulrain's train sim:

I like the simplistic train design. I wish there were more buttons at the navigator room tho, as it kinda looked empty. But it was a nice train map for RM2k3 standards.

lavendersiren's house:

Really cute custom graphics! A very cozy little house and the doggo is cute.

I'll try to get into the remaining entries later on. :D

Thank you! I fixed the door and reuploaded!

thank you for the feedback!
actually, i misunderstood the event at first and thought that interactions aren't allowed (i just read that small interactions part on the rule as "if it's possible, do not add it" kind of thing). i have added some interactions since then.
You're welcome and im glad the bug was fixed. ^_^

Now for the remaining entries:

Irog's Ratdeck:
Really fun running around as a rat infesting this deck. I guess an untidy deck full of holes would be pretty cozy if you're a cute little rat.

Ulevo's Checkar Building:
I can't seem to play it, it gives an error vehicle not found or something.:(

author=aquatorrent
EDIT: just looked at the other entries, but it seems that Ulevo's entry got an error "Cannot open file Vehicles" and there is a collision error on lavender's game on the video console cabinet's second floor and the table in the kitchen's first floor. other than that, i liked the maps.

The game just lacks an RTP file that comes with RPG Maker, I thought you can run it normally, so I didn't modify it. But don't worry, now that I've re-uploaded the fix, it should work fine for you guys.

Yes, any player only needs to get the money from the safe, and then go back to the first floor to use the telephone to save the game, even if the task is completed and the game is cleared. :)

It can actually be counted as a sub-project of my game S.T.F.T..

Reviews for the remaining entries

Irog's "Rat Deck"
This was a neat concept! At first I thought there were a lot of passability errors but then I realized you could walk underneath furniture because you were a rat. It's a cool idea that I haven't really seen done before. Would've been nice to see this fleshed out a bit more, maybe with some interactions and more maps to explore. Solid effort, though!

Starmage's "Egyptian Castle"
Lovely atmosphere to this entry. I'm always happy to see more archaeological type stuff in rpg maker, especially since I've been watching a lot of adventure movies recently, so the timing of this is kind of perfect. The mapping has a few issues, namely the inconsistent wall heights compared to the stairs, but nothing too distracting. Unique interactions for all the food and drinks was a fun idea.

Scourge's "Winter's Night"
Yet another really atmospheric entry. This feels really fleshed out, a lot of worldbuilding in the interactions, and all the people doing their own different things helps the setting feel very alive. It feels a lot like a little snippet from a full length RPG. The mapping is also quite nice, all of the space was used purposefully and there's a good amount of attention to detail. Great job!

pianotm's "Cozy Places"
This was really great, I love the interactions, they're all pretty funny, but Liberty's was easily the highlight. I love how the whole world loops around on itself and things like the bowling minigame. My only feedback would be that I wish the bowling minigame had some sound effects, but otherwise this is a lovely cozy little experience.

Also, I replayed aquatorrent's entry now that some interactions have been added. They helped bring the map to life a lot more, nicely done!
