Description

Welcome to the Mini Music Challenge, wherein participants will compose a piece a music that conforms to the requirements and theme (once revealed). After the submissions deadline, we will all listen to the submissions and vote for a winner!

The last one went over so well I thought I thought I'd do another quick one.

  • This event will consist of a single phase.
  • Participants will be able to sign up and submit their works anonymously using this event page.
  • Votes will be counted and published at end of the event. The person to receive the most votes wins.
  • The composers will have approximately 2 weeks to compose their piece. This will be followed by a short voting period.
  • MP3 is the preferred format, but MIDI and OGG are also acceptable.
  • The composition must be a new and original piece composed specifically for this event.

Short but Effective
There was an ulterior motive for naming this the Mini Music Challenge. For your submission, you are required to keep your piece to 2 minutes or less in length! Can you convey your desired musical aesthetic under this artificial time constraint? You're free to use any kind of instrumentation and sources of sounds you wish.

Riding the Airship!

Let's go to far-off places, and search for treasures bright! Our heroes have obtained an airship and are cruising around the world in an exhilarating flying machine, flowing through the skies with the greatest of ease! But is your RPG a high fantasy? Perhaps it is a steampunk airship? Or maybe it is a futuristic flying device?

Good luck to all the participants!

ummm

how much later? As soon as the deadline passes, the uploading function is disabled.
30 mins to an hour. I have to record it...
The contest currently closes in about 2.5 hours. Are you saying you need 3 - 3.5 hours to be able to submit it?
Woops! My calculations are off. I need five hours (North Carolina would = 4:30)
Ergggh! School!

Ok, I bumped it back 2.5 hours.

Well first time isn't always the best one.
I bet that comments whether it is good or bad will make you better. :)

Btw, is this event has only 1 theme or there'll be more?

This one is only 1 theme.

I imagine that we will have another one of these sometime in the future, though.

Thanks for bumping it back! I think I told you some wrong info, but you still got it right somehow. XD

Errgh! I just got home at 4:30! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Could I still submit somehow?

I realize it will hurt my chances as some people will have already voted, but I really want to submit.
Okay! The contest has closed! This should mean that the voting round has automatically started... *investigates*
Ones that played in my browser:
entry 9 - I am trapped in a mavolent dream!
entry 16 - very dissonant. I didn't care for that.
entry 5 - excellent airshippiness **
entry 22 - I am in a quaint little farming village
entry 18 - I am at the carnival... and something bad is about to happen!
entry 1 - Secret of Mana vibe at the start. I think I am riding a robotic airship. This could work as that. Neat song!
entry 4 - good piano work. Not sure if this is an airship, but could work as ending credits! Good song, though.

Ones I downloaded and played after:
entry 3 - wtf is this. Winner of my personal WTF Award.
entry 10 - flutey!
entry 20 - this is probably the most unique and creative entry *
entry 19 - synths ahoy! Pretty neat tune, though. *
entry 23 - drum drum drum horn drum drum drum horn
entry 25 - FF inspired start, good flow into airshippiness! I like this one.*
entry 15 - carnivale! I am diggin it, though. I think this could work as a futuristic airship theme.
entry 21 - sad forlorn cutscene
entry 24 - ow.
entry 17 - ooo good start. Inspiring airship flying! I am thinking this is pretty great **
entry 14 - rock out. techno rock out. I am in a cantina on Nar Shaddaa! Cool song, but not airshippy. suddenly, mexican guitar.
entry 6 - nice soothing melody and instrumentation. I can see this as an airship theme for sure. *
entry 12 - sad and melodic. Good song, nonetheless. Ending credits vibe again.
entry 8 - good pacing. I am flying around in a TRON RPG. **
entry 13 - errored out.
entry 7 - I am in mourning
entry 2 - EPIC BATTLE
entry 11 - I am totally digging the wood blocks. This is epic airship flying! **
entry 26 - evil airship flying. very far far far away.

So, entries 5, 8, 17 and 11 were my personal finalists, but in the end I had to go with 11. It just struck the right vibe and had that epic feel that I long for in an airship ride!

EDIT:
I starred the ones I liked, and double-starred the ones I really liked.
#17, a winner is you... even if it is midi.

#1, what the hell happened here? This song went from so cool to so broken and out of tune.
Are we supposed to specify which entry we want to win by its entry number, or by the participant number? (Or does our vote not count if we fail to specify which one we are referring to?)

CAST YOUR VOTE HERE! (upper right of event page)
That simplifies things greatly. Thank you for the pointer.
May 10th, around 18:00 UTC
what happens if you vote for yourself somehow, is it counted?
I can see the votes. Don't do that.
Guh, sorry I wasn't able to finish in time after all. All I've got is a goobery melody and a simple bass line. Thanks for extending the deadline though.
well, I think people like to see what people think about their songs, and also I like to do this despite of not being a good musician. So here I go:

Entry 3: :') reminds me of my childhood.
Entry 10: This is cute, It feels like zelda somehow, I picture link playing some kind of mini-game in the forest.
Entry 20: I bet you were the participant who most enjoy creating the song, I might start mumble this tomorrow.
Entry 19: This will fit very well in a futuristic airship shooter stage 1 or 2, nice synths ;)
Entry 23: Its sounds like someone experimenting with two instruments
*Entry 25: after the intro I was feeling the theme so damn good.
Entry 15: I imagine the heroes making aparty inside their futuristic airship.
Entry 9: You need to study more.
Entry 21: It reminds me of dragon warrior, is not the best (the repeated notes of the piano annoys me a little), but I like it and it fits the theme.
Entry 16: relaxing.
Entry 24: Entry 3 is better
Entry 22: Indeed, it sounds like Harvest moon, it doesn't fit the theme at all but till far this is my favorite composition.
Entry 12: My mind is weird, I imagine a woman taking a bubbles bath while listening to this.
*Entry 17: This is when you are going circles around a place cause you want the song to end his loop before landing. I like it a lot.
Entry 14: Man, I will not bother at all listening this in the car, this is pretty addictive.
Entry 6: It has his mystical enchantment.
Entry 5: it is messy but beside that it is pretty funny and it fits.
Entry 26: mmm no comments.
*Entry 8: ...AWESOME
Entry 18: Have you heard those piano who have a chords dictionary thing, that when you put a note it plays the whole chord, well, when you play with them like 30 seconds or more it really starts getting a little creepy, I got the same feeling with this.
Entry 1: It is weird and dark and not imagine anything flying with this, but I would be lying if I said I don't like it.
Entry 13: This sounds familiar.
Entry 7: A half minute of random notes.
Entry 2: come on man, only 50 seconds, that's not enough for something that epic :D.
Entry 4: Not voting for this because it doesn't fit the theme, but... This is a master piece, I just love it whoever compose this. Also, new song on my playlist,
*Entry 11: Well, glad to finish with this song. this was the most professional and the most epic.

My vote: Entry 11
Second Place: Entry 8
Third Place: Entry 25
Fourth Place: Entry 17

Favorite Song: Entry 4
Well I just checked Kentona's reviews and as expected, I got a review that just proves just how rubbish at it... If any of you want to know mines the one that sounds like a guitarist playing to a NES tune...
Dudesoft
always a dudesoft, never a soft dude.

3- Pure genius. Needs more cowbell or cats.
10- I really like the sounds, but for some reason it feels like it keeps bringing me up and dropping me only to grab me and bring me up again. I really like how it sounds though.
20- I feel awkward listening to this.
19- I could see flying to this. I could also see shopping in a bazaar to this.
23- Blacksmith!
25- Favourite so far! This is probably the closest to what I imagine Airship music sounding like. Consistantly enjoyable throughout the song, too.
15- Oh wow, I was actually tapping my toes to this. Gameboy music gold, right here.
9- This sounds like... a water temple or something.
21- I would have liked to hear the piano move a little more, otherwise, it resonated with me.
16- Hmm... Too... slow? Not terrible or anything, but this seems like more of a mood theme. Like a clown dealing with his father's death.
24- Wait, is this Bowser's Castle--no? Reminds me of that more than an airship.
17- Hey! This opening! Yeah!! Reverberating memories of the Ragnarok all up in this song. Add it to my fave list, so far.
14- I like this song, but yeah, more as a NES beat-em-up stage song.
6- Reminds me of Legend of Mana... +1 Bonus. However, it comes off to slow, unless the airship is just a hot air balloon and not really moving fast enough to be fun gameplay...
5- Very Sega Genesis (the sound hurt my ears)
22- Soothing, I actually forgot what I was listening to for a moment.
12- This instantly reminds me of a dark-lit bar where the detective first meets the sassy jazz singer.
26- Odd sound quality. Another high-pitched ear bleed.
8- So far, a no-contest. However I almost wish the drums kicked in earlier. Too much lead in not enough F YES I'M FLYIN' AN AIRSHIP! Still if this were a real airship song, I'd be flying for hours, like I was with Ragnarok.
18- Hey, it's Tom's Variety Shop... no wait, it's an airship.
1- :/ I like it, but the DOOT DOOT DOOTs come out of nowhere, and it's very off-setting.
13- link broken?
7- Sounds like the scene where Mommy tells Bill about the great war 1000 years ago.
2- This is an example of what I meant about the drums in 8. Gets me right in there. While the sound is unique, it makes me wonder what kind of world or airship design is being flown. I can see the extended version of this one being amazing.
4- I will be honest, I didn't listen to it because I have other things waiting in my winamp I don't want to disturb.
11- Clockwork, cogs, wood, and hot air balloons with propellers---wow! Save the best for last! And to think, I started listening to these with random cat noises, and end on this. I realllllllly dig the personality of this song above the rest. Not only does it carry me in the air, it adds a flavour to the song that gives me a sense of the world and adventure! Kudos! Favourite!
