Description

TOP SECRET
CLASSIFIED DOCUMENT

DATE: October 1st, 1999

SUBJECT: (REDACTED)

This document outlines a classified investigation codenamed "They Walk Among Us." This incident involves some of our most renowned agents following invitations of unidentified origin being sent to their home adresses to attend a secretive event by the aforementioned title.

The invitations asked our agents to "make a spooky game based on reality" within the month of October, under the promise of a rare currency referred to as "Makerscore." The invitations had no return adress, but were marked with a cryptic stamp reading "RMN."

------------------------

So what does "being based on reality" entail? Just to name a few options:
  • Something that happened to you.
  • A real person or event. (eg: Jack the Ripper, Mary Celeste, etc...)
  • A real bit of folklore. (eg: Trolls, Sirens, etc...)
  • A real urban legend. (eg: Bloody Mary)
  • A real sighting or report (eg: Phoenix Lights, exorcisms, etc...)
If you are unsure about whether your idea counts, please feel free to contact head of the anomalies department, Frogge.

------------------------

- Your game must fit the event theme.
- Your game does not have to be a horror game, but has to be at least spooky in nature.
- Your game must be made entirely within the event's timeframe. However, you are allowed to start planning and gathering resources before the official start date.
- Your game must be at least 10 minutes long.
- Your game must have an approved game page. Please specify what real story your game is based on on the game page.
- Teams of up to 5 people are allowed.
- Games can be made in any engine. There is no limitation in what resources may be used.
- No AI generated art or writing is allowed, as per the site rules.

Keep in mind, while this is a horror event and stories that may contain uncomfortable subjects are not discouraged, please think about adapting your chosen story with care. I would highly recommend avoiding thing like glorifying serial killers (especially if their victims still have families alive, such as Jeffrey Dahmer or John Wayne Gacy), recent or controversial events (eg: mass shootings) or stories that may be slanderous or disrespectful to real people (eg: Adapting the Elisa Lam story and portraying her as insane.")

- Awakened Mind. Worth 70MS. Submit a complete game.
- An Unsolved Mystery. Worth 40MS. Submit a demo.

------------------------

CONCLUSION:

Investigation into the secretive event remains ongoing, as authorized agents continue to gather intelligence and pursue leads. This document serves as a preliminary report in order to encourage further investigation. Those possessing any information regarding the origin of this strange incident are invited to report their findings to agent (REDACTED).

i thought i still had tiiiime!!!

yeah i did not like the dilemma of choosing to stay up vs wake up early to squeeze extra time so i chose reasonable sleep instead.

Extended it another day so that if you have finished games you can submit
man this was such a cool but tricky theme

edit: this is me saying i wanna see this event happen again and if im not burnt out i'll try my best to participate

but maybe the 'shitpost game encouraged' approach (even if just as an achievement. like a 5ms achievement exclusively for games that are under 5 minutes long) helps people disarm their internal judges
I love this event I loved the theme and it got me really motivated to make games!

But I failed to meet the deadline and I hate that. :(
I'm still working on the game, but it'll probably be finished by December.
In any case, good job to all who participated one way or another!
dont brazilians have time travel?
welp looks like i had to carry this event myself *dusts off hands*

I also love this theme and wanna return to it in some form or another but we’ll see what that turns out to be. If nothing else, it’s gonna be one of the theme options for event event 2 which i’ll hopefully try and do sometime next year.
oh the irony of my gamepage being accepted now... lolol

If the game is complete then let me know and I'll extend the event a tiny bit longer just to give you time to upload.
Hello, this was a really cool event. It's just been a really bad year.
Please bring this back next year if you can frogge.

We got one submission.
Please check out Darken's demo. Dude stayed up all night trying to finish it.
could've very easily canned it and decided to release a better version later.
But he didn't, cause I really wanted to play it, and I loved it.
So this is very very brave of him.

the demo is rough, obviously, but it's good.
I see a lot of great PS1 games in it:
I see the flashlight mechanic from Alone in the Dark:New Nightmare in it (2001)
I see the aiming bazooka from Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped.(1998)
But I also the legendary not much talked about Thrasher:Skate and Destroy game mechanic (1999)
Where a police officer chases you with a taser at the end of the level.

EDIT: initially when he started this, it was meant to solve the over the shoulder camera problem that's popping up in a couple of low poly survivor horror indie games these day - but what I see is a neat alternative take, that might solve the problem that a lot of survivor devs came up against when creating lightgun survivor horror games for CRT monitors in the 2000s.

It's not an easy thing to go through all that work and not submit something, so thank you to everyone who participated.
This was a really cool event and I definitely look forward to the next one.

Thank you Frogge for putting this together ❤️.
