I spent $460 on Christmas gifts.

To myself.

Someone slashed my tires about a week ago. So I had to get new ones.

Don't worry, it totally wasn't me.

I'm totally not stalking you and waiting to do it again either.

This thread is almost 900 pages long.

Anyway I am thinking: will there ever not be drama? I sometimes feel there is something to my personality that attracts the drama. And I kind of want to you know...purge those aspects. But I can't help but feel like if I purged all the aspects of myself that attracted drama, there would be nothing left that makes me me.

Well, substituting the swear words for something less abrasive might help your image. Not all of them: just the times when you say things like, "You're a fucking idiot." Or just cut the "sentence enhancers" out of sentences like that entirely.

So you see, instead of saying, "You're a fucking idiot" you'd be saying "You're an idiot." You'd still be insulting someone, true, but at least nobody would notice it as readily.

Yeah, that might reduce some of the drama.

(In case you're taking this personally, don't. I'm being purely facetious.)
Just a heads-up.

That is all.

@Max: Maybe just try to cut back on the actual insulting people directly thing? A jab here or there is fine but when it's a constant stream at all corners it comes across as very antagonistic. Some people get riled up really easily in those cases and fire back and then suddenly there's a world war on the doorstep... >.<;

I know it can be hard to hold back sometimes, though (I dunno if you've noticed you have I'm sure ;p but we're kinda alike in that). All we can do is keep trying and avoid poking the badger too often or too hard. Sometimes just removing yourself from the conversation is the best way to deal with it (even if you see posts that make you wanna jump in and fire away!).

Recently I've taken to leaving the thread for a few hours (or a day) before deciding whether it's worth it to reply. More often than not, it isn't.

Oh, and instead of saying "You're an idiot" it would be a lot better to say "You're being an idiot/acting like an idiot". "You're an idiot" is more aggressive and permanent in nature - as though they cannot help but be that because it is what they are. "Being an idiot/acting like an idiot" is more a situational thing. You're not always an idiot but in this instance you are acting like one.

Try not to call people things, but instead call what they're doing things.
"You fucking asshole" vs "You're acting like a fucking asshole."
You are applying the insult to their actions instead of them. It's a lot less insulting and doesn't break the site rules about throwing around personal insults.
;p

So wait, being called an asshole is an insult? I've always taken it as a compliment!

I get giddy like a small child finding ice cream when someone says I'm a horrible person. But then again, not everyone possesses the same issues that I do.

I would recommend Liberty's advice about taking a break from threads. I've started doing it recently as well, if only due to the fact that I need to pay more attention to gam mak.

Well, not in Australia, but some people take offence to it - and it's the internet. Any perceived offence is usually amped up to 1000000.

Funny story: I actually had someone insult me the other day by telling me I write too much. It was in reply to a 200 word comment I made, and he went on and on about it. XD

It was so ridiculous I just had to laugh. Wow, being literate is suddenly a bad thing!

Sad story: I actually had someone insult me about a year ago for not typing liek dis. wers ur pursonality, she said. y u no type liek dis is koot.

... I stay away from Youtube comments now. I stay faaaaar away from them.
I try, but there are some channels where I actively participate because I know the youtuber.

I've learned to use the flagging stuff - you can stop people from replying to your comments and block people who are fuckwits with the click of the little flag icon. (When yours is the first comment in a chain, anyone you flag will be removed from the chain altogether. ^.^ )

Tall poppy syndrome, it can be quite insidious.

Though seriously 200 words? That's about two average paragraphs or so, hardly a magnum opus. I am curious though, if he went on and on about it, just how long was his response to your verbose comment?

Well played, YM.
All together, about as much as I'd initially written. Each one was short though. (And of course, after the first one, I got all trolly and kept writing longer and longer replies to them because it was hilarious.)

He eventually pointed out we were both acting like 10 year olds. He was correct, so I wished him a merry Christmas.

Still, it was quite funny that anyone would consider something like that an insult. I almost felt like giving him a crash-course in how to give an insult but decided against it.

I did do that once, though. Some guy called me some names (cunt, slut, whore...) over a generic comment I made about some game. I didn't care too much but when he insulted my avatar (Dudes had made for me a while back) and then started insulting him, I got riled.

I don't like people saying bad things about my friends.

I'm Australian.
I know how to insult.
He didn't like it, but he got a very good crash course in how to insult without using swearing.
I will admit I was pretty harsh but damn, some things you just don't say about people. If you don't want to get hit, you don't fucking spit.
