WHAT ARE YOU THINKING ABOUT RIGHT NOW?

Pianotm, it's very sad what happened to your wife and you, and to be honest it's no surprise that after those experiences you have such a negative attitude towards psychiatry. Still, your emotions and pains are preventing you from taking a fair and rational perspective on the subject and make you make generalized, undifferentiated judgements. That's something you shouldn't do to yourself, and especially shouldn't encourage others to do.
Like LockeZ said, it's undoubtedly true that much too often, psychiatrists (or any kind of doctors, really) misdiagnose or make hasty decisions. There's no excuse for the fact that this happens. But on the other hand, psychiatrists are also the ones who help and save many humans every day. One of my close family members works together with psychiatrists on a professional basis every day. And if they are incompetent, badly informed or under sever pressure and stress, these people can make grave mistakes, which should never happen. But the competent ones among them (which is not just a small amount either) know how our minds work better than anyone else and can apply this knowledge to treat the mind when it's been injured. Among other things, these people prevent suicides, help people deal with mental illnesses, and help mentally "lost" and potentially dangerous people who became completely disfunctional integrate back into society.
It's just like it is with teachers, or any person whose job has a severe impact on other people's personal development. If they don't do their job well, they can cause a lot of damage. And if they do know what they're doing, their help can be immeasurably valuable. So I'm not saying that one should trust every psychiatrist blindly right away. But while you saying that all psychiatrists are evil and dangerous is understandable from an emotional point of view, it is actually very unfair - and most definitely not true.

maybe have the "suicide and psychosis" welp welp topic and the "bear cartoons" welp welp topic because idk i want to talk about the goofy stuff people are thinking about after work, not all the stuff that i deal with at work
one of my kids started a new med last week and was convinced he had a parasite growing under his arm and was asking the nurse how long until it would spread to the rest of his body! that was fun

Speaking of Goofy, I heard he's being treated for clinical depression and alcoholism ever since Goof Troop went off the air.

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

I should never be a teacher OR a doctor, because I would be unable to resist telling him that it was a few hours away from taking over his neural functions, but that he shouldn't worry because once it did it would alter his thoughts to not mind being taken over any more
lockez i'd joke like that with a kid who had like, a bruise or zit and didn't realize it or something... but this kid was actually psychotic, sooooo. he was also 100% convinced that the social worker was going to kill him, to the point where she's not allowed to work with him anymore until some legal stuff gets figured out.
meds are FUCKING CRAZY

Our kids are really missing out on awesome stuff.
I dunno, I'm pretty optimistic about that! I'm mostly working from secondhand knowledge here, but it seems like a good few modern kids' shows (Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Gravity Falls) blend the whole gag-a-week thing with keeping an overarching plot pretty well. they're in the minority, of course, but I wouldn't say that children's shows have declined or anything like that -- there was a lot of crap in the 90s and 2000s, too. either way, it probably helps that it's now easier than ever to find the old stuff if they decide that's worth a look too.
things are definitely improving when it comes to representation, at least! and for kids, being able to see themselves reflected in their media really matters.
SU and GF have a bit more of a storytelling edge on AT but I love all three of those shows and would much rather my students watch them than family guy or south park (especially because they don't realize how liberal those shows are which amuses but saddens me)
also mabel is just the greatest

I'm honestly a little curious about why you'd call those shows 'liberal'. at most, they're the uncontroversial, lazy rich-white-guy sort of liberal that lets people say to themselves 'sure I make a lot of jokes at the expense of black people, but I'm in favour of legalizing weed so I'm still a good person'. the sort of liberal that's really just conservatism with a hip, edgy paint job.
like, I'm way more concerned about people growing up with shows that regularly attack trans people (and WOW Family Guy and South Park are both impressively terrible about that) than I am about those shows being vaguely, lazily liberal.

that's not what i meant, sorry i didn't clarify that very well. a lot of my kids look at something like colbert or south park and say "this fits my racist, conservative views" without... realizing.... yeah.
i don't think family guy is a good show and agree with what you said a lot re: paint job

oh! yeah, sorry, my mistake. filling in the rest of people's thoughts for them when things are vague is a really awful habit of mine.
I actually hated most of the kid's cartoons when I was a kid. The only show that I remember fondly from that era was The Tick. I do sort of ironically appreciate the over-the-top 90's 'tude shit, though--I'm thinking Extreme Dinosaurs and Street Sharks. The Simpsons was great, too, of course, but that's not a kid's cartoon, haha. Also, I watched the ending to David the Gnome on youtube and cried like a baby, so that show was probably pretty good; I missed out on it as a kid, though.
I think Regular Show and Adventure Time are both pretty excellent (especially Regular Show), and I've heard good things about Avatar/Legend of Korra (I can't think of a single non-anime action cartoon that I enjoyed as a kid), so kid's cartoons today seem to be in good shape. I've only seen one episode of Steven Universe and didn't particularly like it, but it could have just been an early episode where the characters were still being developed. I found most of the cast a bit annoying, though.
South Park's great. It's one of the two comedies I actually look forward to now (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia being the other one).
Family Guy's a real piece of shit, though, so feel free to hate it for whatever reason you want.

You didn't like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Samurai Pizza Cats, Earthworm Jim, The Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack, Transformers, Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, Spider-Man, or X-Men? I mean not liking some of those is perfectly fine, not everyone has the same taste. But not liking any of them? Geez. I think you just hate JUSTICE and WINNING and HEROISM and BRINGING PEACE TO PLANET EARTH, and should be exiled through a portal into Dimension X.

HOW DID YOU KNOW?!IT HAS BEEN FORESEEN!

FORESEEEEEEEN!!
"Hate" was probably the wrong word; I used to watch a lot of those shows, but I didn't get into them. It was more like it was just what was on Saturday mornings, so I watched it. Better than the reruns of Family Ties and hours of tennis that followed them, at least.
I never got a chance to really watch Earthworm Jim because it was on during goddamn church. Lousy Methodist upbringing.

Oh man, you're talking about some of the best memories of my childhood.
@NeverSilent and LockeZ, You're right about me being overly critical of psychiatry, and I know it, but sometimes I get into these moods and I can't help but remember that most of her problems started when she went to the psychiatrist.
And the first one had misdiagnosed her. Her mother had just died. Of course she was having mood swings. The second psychiatrist, the one that put her on Xanax to deal with the disorders caused by her adverse reaction, accused the first one of ignoring existing circumstances when diagnosing her. He said depression was only to be expected and a diagnose of bi-polar disorder was jumping the gun.
When a healthy woman walks into a doctor's office and walks out sick specifically because of the doctor, that sticks with you.
@Mawk. Thank you, it's okay. It was awhile back, and I was just trying to explain to Corf why I feel the way I do.

Today I almost considered making a custom-battle system in RM2K3. I don't doubt that I'd be capable of doing it, but I don't think it would be remotely worth my time and the fact that I considered it worries me...
VX Ace is probably the smarter choice for custom battle scripts - the main reason you want 2k3 is for the oldschool graphics and the ATB system.
