There's nothing wrong with a little nationalism, but if the average American is actually blind enough to still think this country is anything even remotely resembling great, they deserve to be lied to.
Have you ever been overseas? Have you ever done any extensive traveling? I'll be the first to say that America drinks way too much of the nationalism punch, and that we have a lot of progress we need to do via observing other nations if we want to maintain our standing, but the whole millennial hipster never-left-the-couch mentality of 'America sucks it's totally a third world country now!' reeks of lack of knowledge about well...tons of the rest of the world, Europe is still striving to emulate the USA in many ways, not to mention the literally dozens of developing countries who still look to the fundamental American model for everything to quality of life, economy, defense, and science. Not to mention the swaths of immigrants who still travel thousands of miles to get here, passing up other 1st world countries to do so.
I tire of the 'AMERICA IS THE GREATEST!!!!' sometimes too, and yes, we have our problems, and yes, we are aware, and yes, we're working on them, but to pretend it's some sort of shithole is laughably naive.

It is precisely because Americans thought themselves proud, strong, undefeated and untouchable that this kind of terrorism has such a profound impact. Or image of terrorism, if you would so like to name it.

To try to condense decades upon decades of events from multiple powers and actors that culminated into the current situation of terrorism in America into a soundbite such as 'it's because you guys thought you were the shit' is ignorant and childish.
It's also ignorant and childish to casually dismiss and project the terrible effects, threats, and environment of terrorism into an entire nation of 300+ million people, almost all of which have nothing to do with bringing terrorism on themselves or anyone else with the sentiment of 'lol have fun with that' is even worse.
What kind of people are really the problem here? I suggest some people examine themselves.
Realized something great today- they actually put Freya in Final Fantasy Record Keeper! I'm not totally sure when that happened, but considering I thought she'd never get picked to be in any FF related crossover thing I'm pretty fucking happy about it. This isn't about being 'murican!!!!! or some shit. This isn't about terrorism and all manner of 'can't get along'. These are civilian lives wiped off the face of the planet, on both sides of the fence.

One life is everything to someone. By saying the unnecessary killing of millions throughout the span of human history is just a drop in the bucket of 'can't be assed' really says a lot for you as an irredeemable sociopath.
But here's some history: Great Britain is literally the worst thing to ever happen to the human race. It's the source of so much killing and national pride that's still felt worldwide today. Without Great Britain's mighty influence to slaughter millions of innocent lives in the name of expansion, there wouldn't be the supposed shithole that is America, or an Australia.
Black people wouldn't have had to endure centuries of being property/second-class citizens had it not been for the triangle trade. Great Britain sent wealth to western Africa in exchange for the transport of human cargo to America (those damn ungrateful colonials!1oneonefive) who in turn sent exports (new country = a shitton of fresh, useful resources) to Great Britain to further the empire.
The lordship of England allowed the people who would become the "colonials" adequate resources to cross the Pacific (which includes provisions and transport) in the promise of furthering Great Britain's reign to the other side of the world. Germany got its grubby hands on Europe before being pushed back by Russia, but Great Britain successfully pushed their influence across the entire globe.
That's just the tip of the iceberg. I'm sure you could also take your own understanding of history to connect this to modern day terrorism. Probably has a lot to do with imperialism and the Roman Catholics strong-arming Israel away from its inhabitants.

Am I wrong about astronauts having to hitch rides in Russian spacecraft? Or maybe you think there's a nation that has more prisoners than us (I'd like to see someone argue that)? Or our education system is actually the best! That's why our teachers are being blamed while laws are passed striping children of more and more of their education. We don't even teach shop anymore, and people wonder why all of our jobs are going to China.

No, you educate me. The burden of proof is on you to defend your claim of

What grounds do you have to make a claim as heady as that? Yes, our prison population is a big concern. Yes, our education system is also a concern (while still holding the best colleges and research centers in the world).
I'm unsure of what you mean on 'hitching rides on Russian' spacecraft. How does that figure relative to NASA. Elaborate? And also your claim of 'teachers being blamed'. Is this a statistical epidemic or hyperbole? And teaching shop (or rather, the shift away from vocational manufacturing is what I'm assuming you're getting at) has very little to do with 'jobs going to China', especially considering the dozens of factors in shifts in the job market, like the progression to total automation for example.
These are pressing concerns, yes, but many 1st world countries are dealing with issues, and yes, America is still a 1st world country, and considering that the majority of the population of the world is still living in what would be defined as 3rd world conditions, I'd say that America, and any other 1st world nation is pretty great by default. Just a work in progress.
